I learned during my latest bout that heat helps. May alleviate it some, but just having a different type of pain sensation to help the monotony is very helpful. I put a very hot pad (the type you microwave) on, and was literally thinking to myself "ohhhh, that burns SO good". It's like the trope where the sergeant breaks your fingers to make you not think about the gunshot.

It's still in me, don't think its in my bladder but not getting much right now other than occasional blood and twinges...not sure what it's problem is. Only 3mm and they said at the ER several days ago it was mostly through, but seems to want to just hang out.

I woke up at 5 AM yesterday with the worst pain ever, I thought it was the Asian food from the night before. But it was more on my full left side, not my intestinal area like usual. I had no idea what was going on until I got to the ER 3 hrs later. At first, some Motrin drip, then morphine (Motrin didn't do squat, more on that later). . After I had the MRI or whatever in that spooky machine, they said it was kidney stones...which is what we were guessing.

I stayed in ER with a couple of more morphine hits until we all realized I couldn't just stay there all day on morphine, so I went home. About 2 hrs after I got home, morphine wears off and I'm in the fetal position again. About that time , my wife comes home with the Tylenol with codene Rx. And some other pill designed to make it move.

Well, I got up again this morning at 5 again with pain at a 3 scale. Took the Rx. Well, sure enough an hour later I'm at an 8. That Tylenol doesn't do anything! As i write this, I'm at a 6...just waiting for this 2 millimeter to move again and put me down. Aaarrrgh!

Now at an 8 again, I'm out.

OMG! I've had one kidney stone, aka Devil Spawn. I've can't imagine what y'all are going through.

Worst pain I've ever experienced.

I'm sorry anyone has to experience this!

I sympathize with you all. Since my first one sometime back in the '70s I've probably passed north of 30. Doc said mine were calcium based. I've been able to pass all but one that required lithotripsy. Most of mine began with back flank pain but not all. Some gave me little to no pain. The ones with pain usually brought nausea so if I did have that pain I grabbed a trash can for throw up. I would go to ER and usually a shot of Demerol which got me through the pain and eventually I passed them. My nurse wife says they no longer give Demerol.
Last year and the year before during the months of August and September I passed anywhere from three to five. Last year, at least for those passed during those months, I determined that my consumption of Blue Bell ice cream was the culprit. Seriously, I would frequently eat a bowl by itself and would pop one out, interestingly those were not accompanied by pain. Cried and gave up my Blue Bell and so far since Sept I've had no problems.
Don't know that there's any connection but probably ten or fifteen years ago after a bout of bloody urine my doc did a cystoscope and confirmed it was stone related. But after that scope it seemed to me that I had less pain/ trouble passing stones. I told the doc that I thought the garden hose he used for the scope stretched everything it passed and that was the reason for the lessened symptoms. He laughed and maybe.

Sitting here hurting after lithotripsy done yesterday to try to bust up 3 more that formed in my right kidney since hell marathon 2020. I'm thinking of donating this organ and saving the one that never forms any stones.

Bumping last year's thread so folks can get queasy again.

I second Hunter Aggie's recommendation of Chanca Piedra which means stone breaker in Spanish. I had lithotripsy for my 4th stone which was about about 6 mm. It broke in half but did not turn to "gravel" as in the past. After a week without passing the two stones, I asked my urologist what would happen if I did not pass the two halves. He said he'd have to"go up and grab them." I saw positive reviews of Chanca Piedra on the internet and found some in my local Walgreens. Within 3 days, I passed the stones and was very relieved!

I'll have to ask my urologist about it. When I had my last lithotripsy back in 2016, it also only broke my stone into a a couple pieces, and it took 4 months to pass. Jury is out on the one I just did Friday. Got some dust, but not enough to account for a 6 mm stone. Lots of blood still though.

I'm up to 5, each one has been different.

The latest and smallest one was the worst and I unleashed words of violence towards my nurse that would make Andrew Dice Clay uncomfortable.

I pissed for 48 hours in large jugs and took a sample and mailed em off so I can figure out was causes these spawns of satan.

DR recommended shotgunning beer and hot tub, said every person is different in what causes them

Years ago after lithotripsy I had to use one of those jugs.

The nurse told me I had to keep the jug in the refrigerator in between uses. I told her that there was no way in hell I was going to put a jug of piss, sealed or not, in there.

She told me I needed to keep it cold so I told her I'd keep an ice chest in the bathroom.. She was shocked nobody before me suggested that.

I have one in my left kidney right now (Well, I assume it's still there because I haven't passed it). The last time I had lithotripsy I went from one big one in my kidney to a bunch of little ones attacking my ureter like they were assaulting Omaha Beach. Like someone previously stated, the catheter they left in between my kidney and bladder ended up feeling like I was being stabbed every time I took a leak.

I'm an old hat at these, but they still wreck shop everytime they turn up. Have passed small(ish) ones that are 2-3mm on my own, had lithotripsy done on larger ones, but the stone barely broke down and passed two halves of a 4-5 mm stone anyways. Had uteroscopy done where they either collect the stone whole and haul it out, or hit it with a laser internally to fragment it first. All of the above hurts.

For post-surgery have done with and without a stent to bypass the ureter, both are terrible. With a stent you get backpressure every time you urinate, constant urge to pee, and get woken up by the pain a lot. Plus they pull it out when you are awake. Without the stent you risk the ureter spasming and collapsing in to create a liquid backup in your kidney which just feels like a stone again. There is no good way to deal with them in my experience.

I hope none of you ever have to suffer through a bout of them, but just felt like venting as I sit here and hurt post-surgery. 14 stones and counting since I turned 20, and 4 of which were not passable on my own.

So sorry to hear this. I had 3 in two years. The pain was excruciating, and I couldn't keep anything down for a month. Lost 30 pounds. But the IV drips and those warm blankets in the hospital were amazing. It was than damn College Station water. Since moving to Houston and not drinking from the faucet, all good. Here's hoping you're at the end of your kidney stone experiences.

Hah. Not likely. I've had 15+ stones since I was 19. Three of those required uteroscopy, and I've had lithotripsy three times as well (2x on one stone before). Root cause appears to be too much calcium eliminated in urine. Trying different meds to try to get that better under control.

If you don't want to form any more, the Kidney Stone Diet is worth looking at. Look up Jill Harris (tons of research by Frederick Coe, a world renowned kidney doctor on prevention comes with her course) but take her course, if you know which kind of stone you produce. It won't do much for those currently in your kidneys, but I haven't formed a new one in 6 years using diet and some drugs my urologist wanted me to use. You can get your levels right with a 24 hour urine every 6 months. Sorry you guys are going through this...prayers to you all.

Have you tried chlorthalidone with potassium citrate? I've been using it to keep calcium in my kidneys, rather than it coming out in urine. I also offset with citracal plus vitamin D. Something to ask your Urologist about.
