Buying surround sound stereos used to be a thing until mid 00s. After that kind of feels like people stopped caring.

Not really. They are built-in home theater rooms now.

People figured out that when you have a kickass home stereo system it just enables one person in the house to be an ******* and render the rest of the house useless to anyone trying to do anything besides listening the *******'s music.

Everyone listens to highly compressed low-quality audio through their $7.00 ear buds while also being distracted by 8 different things, so no, I don't think hi-fi stereos are the thing they used to be.

When you reach a certain age, your hearing starts to go anyway, so you shift your priorities to buying noisy, expensive power tools for your garage workshop, so it works out.

I have an in home stereo system with pretty decent built in ceiling speakers. But 9 times outta 10, we just say "Alexa play some Stones" and go with that.

I have a studio quality Denon AVR-X1200W amp wired for my TV in the game room. Definitive speakers (4 in the ceiling, plus 600 series subwoofer and midrange). I run my vintage 1980s Techniques turntable thru it, as well as hookups for electric guitars and keyboards.

We've been known to have some fun jam sessions out in that room.

I still have my wired tower speakers in my living room, with a Yamaha receiver that I bought around 1995. Still sounds awesome!

I got tired of dealing with all the speaker wire and other cables and swapped my old surround system for a sound bar as it puts out the same quality sound. But I'm also an lolpoor and my house isn't big enough the have a bonus / media room so my set up is in the living room.

I've mostly moved on to good headphones and desktop gear. I don't really have a good living room for a 5.1 surround setup although I still have my speakers.

I've become a headphone snob. I play my AKG's and Beyerdynamics off my LG phone with DAC. Since my wife is a minimalist, I have a newish Aiwa Exos-9. It's basically a new hi-fi boombox that is less intrusive and can be put away easily. It's amazing what newer tech can do in a small size.

When we redo our house I'm probably going to do built in speakers. Maybe Harman Kardon or Klipsh.

I remember when Dolby Surround sound came out for VHS tapes. I ran out and bought an awesome Sony DD receiver and sub woofer.

Back in late 2018, I decided to spring for a pair of ZMF Aeolus headphones. They cost $1k but I have no regrets. The build quality and the sound quality is freaking amazing.

I never thought about it, but experience messing with wires is probably a big reason why so many of us just accepted smaller sound when other options came along.

Have 5 wired Sony speakers in my living room, sub woofer, & receiver. Probably spent $1000 on the system when I was a young professional making $30K per year and just HAD to have surround sound.

Dumbest purchase ever. Haven't used them in 7-8 years.

Same. Spent probably $3k+ on system and speakers for the living room and hardly use it anymore. Wife and kid said it's too much when watching movies. Waste of money. I did set up another system in the garage I jam out to, but I kept it simple and didn't buy over top equipment.

A few years ago gave away my Bose system and replaced it with a Denon amp, Martin Logan speakers and SVS sub. Best purchases ever.

Hopefully one day! Right now I'm still trying to pimp out the system in my Caddy.

Soundbars have gotten so cheap and good that most people are probably content with that instead of a full system.

We have a Polk sound bar and subwoofer. Great for TV. Not great for music. It gets really muddled musically, but tv and movies are very clear and understandable. If I were to get another sound bar it would be an Harman Kardon Enchant. I got a Refurb one for my mom so she could hear her tv better. It is really nice. Music and everything sounds great on it. I was very surprised for spending $260. In fact, maybe she'll want to trade.....

I run preouts from a Yamaha Dolby surround receiver through an Adcom 5x100 amp. That feeds a Mirage center channel, PSB surrounds and Vandersteen 2CE Sigs for mains. Those are actually biwired. There is also a Mirage bipolar 150 amp sub. When I want music only and drop to 2 channels the Vandersteens kill it.

So yes, wired speakers are still a thing.

I just recently bought a nice 2.1 Yamaha set up and I can't believe I went so long without one. I forgot how good music sounds coming out of actual hard wired speakers. One of the best things I've bought in a long time.

Currently enjoying some tunes with my AKG K7XX headphones out of a Schiit amp and DAC. The headphones were $200 but they sound like they cost much more with the right gear behind them.

I still have all my reciever stuff and I think the speakers are even hooked up. Since I bought a Roku soundbar and subwoofer, none of that has even been powered on. The only reason for me to keep a reciever is playing my turntables and my dad's old records. That hasn't happened in a decade either.

I've got a screen, projector, new receiver, and never used towers that I was about to hook up in our media room in Texas before moving to Colorado last year. Maybe I'll eventually finish out the basement and use them. Waste of money right now.
