I doubt I'd have that in their top 10.

Concur with a lot of what's been said here. The Beatles have had overall a more lasting cultural impact, it's hard not to say they were the 'greater' band.

That said, Pet Sounds may be the single best album of all time. Good Vibrations as a track blows any single song the Beatles ever released out of the water. Much of the very best of the Beatles came about when they chased what the Beach Boys were doing....and even at their best, they didn't quite catch them.

Who knows what would have happened without Brian Wilson's struggles with mental illness and addiction.

The Beatles actually played their instruments in the studio. Beach Boys used the Wrecking Crew as the studio musicians for Pet Sounds
Yeah, but about half of what most people think makes the Beatles sound so great, had nothing to do with John, Paul, George or Ringo, but came from the RCA studio engineers.

I always thought the Beatles "sound" was John and Paul singing in unison.
Okay, not necessarily RCA people, but the engineers with the electronic equipment doing things the actual band members were not even aware could be done.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recording_practices_of_the_Beatles

Although commonplace through digitized electronics today, it took actual modification sometimes of the analog recording equipment (e.g. changing resistors to slow things down), to make a lot of what now considered so "innovative" about the Beatles' sound. Give the Beatles themselves credit for being willing to allow the engineers to experiment with these things and keeping the ones that turned out to be musical, but it couldn't have happened without the "creativity" of the engineers themselves.

Yes, it was George Martin and the engineers who made it happen, but it was the still the Beatles ideas that they took and figured out how to put to tape.

The Beatles body of work and the short time and rate that they produced it, puts them above everyone.

Brian Wilson did all of that himself on the Beach Boys side, which is why I tend to think he is a genius on level of McCartney or possibly even greater.

Sadly, the mental illness and addiction really shortened his career and his prime.

Pet Sounds is great but Good Vibrations isn't even the best song on the album. The Beatles have plenty of songs better than that.

I agree. If I were to rank all the individual members of the two bands, Brian Wilson would be #1. 2-5 would be the four members of the Beatles.

One of the things that separates the Beatles is the sheer quantity of quality songs. Rate the Beatles top 50 or 100 songs versus any act top 50 or 100 and the Beatles will come out way on top. Ask people their favorite Beatles song and it may be one of 50 or 60 songs. Not too many acts can say that.

My personal favorite is Surfer Girl. Yes, it's from their early "surf rock" phase but give it a listen. It's an amazing track and you can hear what The Beach Boys will become.

For me The Beach Boys are interesting as a "what if". Almost every non-rap or non- R&B/Motown group that came after the Beatles is influenced by the Beatles. Very few are trying to sound like or grow from what The Beach Boys did.

I think a big part of that is the actual musical genius of Brian Wilson. Listen to the instrumentals on Pet Sounds, it's pushing symphony type complexity. They kind of went to the edge of what pop music consumers will tolerate and certainly beyond what all but the most gifted musical minds are capable of.

I'm old enough to have listened to The Beach Boys, back in the day. I grew up in Texas, so not much a fan of that
Cali / Surfer style. Now that I'm older, not much has changed. I still wouldn't listen to more than 1 or 2 of their songs.

"Here Comes the Sun" isn't even the best Beatles song with "sun" in the title. That would be "I'll Follow the Sun."

But definitely advantage Beatles.

Just because some of you are uncultured boors doesn't mean we all are. If you are a fan of Van Halen, it was a Kinks cover that gave them their first hit so you should know at least two Kinks songs.

My favorite early British Invasion band behind The Beatles and just ahead of The Who although The Stones are a better than either The Kinks or The Who.

As was my reply, Three songs? Sorry that still makes you an uncultured boor.

Does Mike Love always sing off key, or is his five note vocal range so average that he always just sounds like a karaoke king? His dance moves are so incredibly bad, he must practice being bad.

Yet, I love The Beach Boys. (Beatles still better, though).
