Best drink: Sidral Mundet. The original red apple is great but sometimes I'll mix it up and go with the green or golden variety. Manzanita Sol however, is straight garbage

Tex mex is good stuff but any Tex mex East of I-35 isn't spicy enough is too Americanized. True Mexican food is one of the best culinary experiences in the world and one of the best cuisines in the world. The best tex-mex is in west Texas, this is fact like 2+2=4.

For big cities I'm sure it does. Plenty of better spots in smaller cities and towns in south and west Texas.

I would agree 100%

Most of not all "Mexican" food restaurants cater to the tourists.

It's true. Like most things, Texas took Mexican food and improved it.

I like a good horchata, tamarindo or even a jamaica every now and then. Nothing better than to wash down a good torta with a nice icy cold beverage.

I like Tex-Mex more than authentic Mexican, but authentic Mexican is still really good. I think some people confuse Mexican with Cali-Mex, which isn't the same thing. I've heard on this site plenty of times people saying they had real Mexican food in California and it sucked.

Noah's blanket Tex-Mex > Mex can be expanded. There is Tex-Mex, Cali-Mex, New Mexican, etc. Then even in Mexico, cuisine from Baja, Oaxaca, Monterrey, etc. all have their own characteristics. All have great traits. It's like a European saying "American food" - it's too broad to have much meaning.

I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'

Ultimate Mexican breakfast, especially after a previous night's high alcohol consumption, is Queso flameado. That white Mexican cheese fire melted on a giant plate with a central circle of some reeeaaally good chorizo. Pair that with some hot flour tortillas, or some of those incredible thick homestyle corn tortillas that are hard to find. It'll chase away the hangover. Great appetizer too. The plate has to be thick and HOT so the queso stays melted till you can get it eaten.

No question that cooked Spam brings a salty edge to foods you mix it with that is off the charts. Really does pair well with Mexican food spices.

Has to be cooked though. Uncooked, and I am OUT.

I tend to agree with this, but I will say that every time we have guests in from California and we take them out for local TexMex, their reactions are always over the top, with comments like 'OMG, this blows away our Mexican food!'

Living in California in the Marine Corps, I ate a lot of it there. I learned to like it and appreciate it for what it was, but it was nothing like back home.

Interesting seeing the subtle difference between local Mexican in places like New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado too. Good and not so good everywhere you go.

I've found Mexican (Americanized) food from west Texas is the best followed by south Texas. I really like New Mexico's style as well. Not a huge fan of central and East Texas versions not California's.
