Why the angry stubbornness when it comes to using technology? Learn how to use it. You don't need to know how to code or anything, just learn the basics of navigating a computer or smartphone. Computer skills in this day and age are equivalent to reading and writing. Don't pull a millennial like me away from what I'm doing because you can't figure out how to email a document from your iPhone.

Did they make you angry when they told you to stop dicking around on your phone and help someone out?

Just turned 60. I have to use computers / smart phone technology daily. I still prefer a ball point pen and a yellow legal pad. Where will technology be when the great meltdown occurs and we're back to hunting and gathering.

I mean. I'm halfway kidding since it wasn't too big of a deal.

But I do get frustrated with those who are in the workplace and outright refuse to learn to use it. And even outside of the workplace, such as my grandmother who lives by herself, who angrily refuse to wear an Apple Watch or fall detector to notify us when there has been an accident.

omg, my dad is 75 and still works in our office. it's a daily battle. I get answers like:

- i'll never use that
- call the IT guy (over any small problem)
- why won't this print? how do you print this? (printer was off)

Self credit card readers at stores have been around for two decades and people still seem confused on how to use them. It is not an age problem, it is a stupid problem.

This isn't a new problem.

I've been around awhile, and I remember when our office first got e-mail. The older executives almost all had their secretaries print them out so they could read them on paper. They simply refused to learn how to open their e-mail and respond.

When today's young people are older and everyone communicates via hologram, they'll be the same way. "Why can't we Skype like we used to? It always worked so well."

No comment on this except to say that you're officially an old when you switch from typing on your smartphone with your thumbs to holding it in one hand and poking at it with the other one.

I asked some old developer once how he got through life doing hunt-n-peck typing, and he said when he was in high school, typing wasn't taught to boys because it was women's work.

So yeah, that generation was not inclined towards handling their correspondence themselves, especially with executive-level sense of entitlement that would make a Millenial quail.

Sort of depends on what you're typing but swipe sounds like old kryptonite (which for some reason is a word I had to type out with my thumbs)

Exactly, my grandchildren think email is sooooo old and ridiculous. They have email accounts but if you send them an email they won't get it because they never read email. Email to them is like junk mail in the post office mailbox.

I've learned and forgot more software like Fortran, Symphony, Quattro Pro, etc than you've ever seen, so I'll take my damn time adapting to the latest software fad until I know it's gonna stick for a while.

One thing in life is missed a lot - people assume someone "can't grasp" somethinig when many times it is they just don't feel the need or desire to. Heck, I've shown people that are supposedly smart which way you turn a screwdriver to drive a screw in and which way to remove - yet they seem that they "can't grasp" it when it is they just don't care.

For you young folks, remember, when you get old, you realize there are only so many hours left in your life. You prioritize things differently. Your grandfather may just say I don't give a **** about an iPhone.

I'm 73 and still working, and I'm not the oldest person in my workplace. Since I'm using a computer my entire shift, obviously I've adapted. If you ever studied Darwin back when you were in school, you'll remember that adaptation is not a choice and the alternative to it is not pretty.

Go Gen-x. We span the gap and quietly go about the business of getting things done. We'll get old someday, too.

I'll stop grumbling about technology when the young kids stop taking the number the computer spits out as gospel, without bothering to stop and think if the answer makes any sense. And don't even think about asking them what the results were for the last run they did. They've already saved over it instead of making a copy and editing the copy. Obviously, there's no paper copy either and they have to redo it and waste more time.
