I'll add one thing to the discussion ... what if the girl was physically or mentally handicapped? Does that change the tenor here at all? And her injuries sound pretty serious .... just saying.

Bullsheet. Kid threw the first punch - he deserved the beat down. And the humiliation for life of getting his arse whipped by a smallish female.

She has already paid her punishment in full by getting fired.

My thoughts on this jive with my personal view of foreign policy: I am not in favor of moron-on-moron violence per se, though I would not favor using the resources of non-morons to bother with it too much beyond limiting indirect impact to non-moron interests.

Because the grown woman wasn't defending herself. You aren't defending yourself when you are standing over a 15 year old while beating the piss out of them.

no, that teacher was not "defending herself".

The student was seated and was no danger to the teacher. The teacher lost it and flipped out on this student.

To "defend" herself, all that teacher had to do was step back.

She did not, she hit the student several times, then ripped her out of the desk, threw her on the ground and stomped on her head. That goes way beyond "defense".

This woman should not be in any position of authority over people who might ever question her.

teacher was in kids face, what is the teenager supposed to do in this situation? It's anyone guess. She chose wrong, but you cannot in any circumstance ever hit a student. Period.

If this happened out on the streets, then I would agree with you. Although I do think her response is disproportional to the student's actions.

But this is at a school where the teacher should be held to a higher standard.

There is such a thing as a reasonable, proportionate response to any transgression. Anyone with eyes can see that the substitute teacher's actions were neither reasonable or proportionate, and she was responsible for most if not all the escalation.

Maybe the reason she got hit was, from what I can tell, her face was close enough to the student's to get hit. I do not agree with a student hitting a teacher ever, but I also do not agree with a teacher provoking and getting in the face of a student like this one did. This lady was itching to unload a can, and unload she did.

The kid was seated and the response was not in defense but in anger, and so above and beyond what would be called for that criminal charges are absolutely appropriate. The teacher actually took the time to put her glasses down before she completely whooped ass. If there had been a quick, immediate smack back and that was it, I could understand it. But when there is a whole "hang on a second, I'm gonna put my glasses down and then come kick your ass", that is criminal.

Also, with her initial anger, proximity, and physically grabbing the kid, I'd be far more willing to buy the kid's punch being in defense than anything the teacher did being considered defense.
