DG was insane. I know people who HATED those guys and committed acts as a result that were probably against the law.

yep youngsters don't ever pay attention to history

DG was built on an old indian burial ground. Any one who lives there is driven insane.

The admin doesn't want you to know. They thought it was just men but its not.

HEY! I lived in DG and I was not insane. (Well... we did have mud fights with the guys in surrounding dorms.)

Buddies from my years in the dorms have talked informally about going to Gates with an offer of raising money to endow a couple of scholarships of his choice if he spares the dorm.

It's just something we batted around in conversation, but it's nice to have a chip or two to play at the bargaining table.

Keegan- good thought. Did the Dairy folks try that (offer of endowment)?

Where's Hotard?

If this is for real and they don close down Hotard, SOMEONE has to build an indoor swimming pool using two rooms on different floors - or at least do the digging.

I heard DG had one of those before they 'converted'; always wanted to see that.

Also, have every able bodied Hotardian meet at a designated time and designated place, cover their bodies from head to toe with shaving cream, and run to Evans and splatter themselves on the windows and make shaving cream angels.
Then someone needs to leave a "This service brought to you by the Hotard Hilton" card behind.

Don't take this lying down!!!!!

Easy SNK.... No wait that was your mom.

I have no problem with Hotard, your Yellow in '88 was a great guy, busted his a$$.

I think it sucks that they want to shut you guys down. Just like they did to DG, Puryear and Law. Cause I know that moves Walton up one the list.

I dont really see why you feel like you are entitled to live there. Like it or not, you are living in a building that the University owns. The University has decided that they need to allocate their resources (in this case Hotard) in a different manner. They are under no obligation to allow you to live where you want, certainly not when it is to their detriment.

You should at least be thankful they are giving you the opportunity to move to another hall at a reduced rate.

You are right, Texas A&M owns the building and can do with it as they please.

But, that does not mean that their decision is the right one. At least, not the right one as far as being conducive to the Aggie Spirit. What will build more Spirit at A&M....great dorms where people can live together, have pride in their housing, build traditions, etc. (like you and I had)...or an office building for workers?

I dont know if we can make a change here, but I do think that having Hotard (and other dorms) stick around, will do wonders for the Aggie Spirit. And for that reason alone, I am for saving Hotard.

Here's the thing...

Would the University be able to do an end-around input from current and former students if they were taking a dorm on the quad (those dorms aren't even close to being filled) and using it for offices?

According to the University Master Plan, Hotard is one of the buildings to be torn down in the next 10 years.
Keegan99

That would be the University Master Plan that changes on a year to year basis as committee after committee makes changes.

In 1999, we were told by those in charge that Hotard would "be around for at least another 20 years".

You may be correct. A lot of buildings marked for demolition to make way for new buildings. I have heard that areas along main drives, like University Drive, will probably be the first to go, to make way for the newer, prettier buildings. If that is true, Hotard could go sooner. Hotard sits in the one location along University that hasn't had any new construction in the last 50 years of so. It has to be an area they are looking at improving.

Baloo - There honestly isn't that much functional space. They would have to relocate a US Post Office (is that technically federal land?), and/or do something about Neeley Hall - a very modern building.
neeleyangel07

Baloo- Neeley and Hobby were built in the 80's... that's pretty recent for around here!

I would pay money to see Keegan and the other Hotard survivors sponsoring a "Diversity" scholarship. And really, where is a man more equal than in a Hotard bathroom?

Diversity at its best!! It is a place where we are all equal.

Keegan -- you are correct about the Post Office property being on federal property. I found this out first hand in 1986 when I accidentally chipped a golf ball through a post office window from the Hotard back yard. The KK threatened to involve the feds. They get sure get surly about someone practicing athletics. At 2:30 am with a liter of Jack Daniels' stashed in the bag.

I suspect the scholarships wouldn't get very far, unfortunately -- cue the BeBop 'Big Cigar' lament. I would like to hear the hue and cry if this happened to one of the half-empty blockhouses on the Quad.

I need to make a pilgrimage to College Station before the semester ends, I guess.

The Hotard Janitor incident happened during the 97-98 school year. I know she called him Walter, but I only knew his nickname, which I think was Spud or something... Spud might have been a different guy from Walton, but I digress.

I lived on the 2nd floor, and as I remember the 3rd floor was getting trashed too often. So the janitors struck back by not stocking the bathrooms on the third floor. The guy on the recording respectfully confronted her about this while someone else recorded it (not sure if they were conspiring together or not). I think the janitor was transfered to a different dorm afterwards.

I didn't get up to the 3rd floor very often since there wasn't any need. So I can not personally attest to the condition of that floor.

That audio clip made the rounds of ResNet pretty fast.
Keegan99

It happened in the 98-99 year, and the kid involved was Squeak, who was about 5'7", 140, with blonde hair a wiry build. The janitor was literally seconds away from kicking his ass.

Just resign yourself to the fact that the university (administration) is going to take it....just as they did Bonfire...... In a couple of years, most of the students and former students wont care...which is what the administrators want...
Andrew99

Yeah, Squeak... Thanks... I had a mental block on that. I'm still thinking that happened while I lived there. I was in Walton from Fall '95 to Spring '97, and Hotard from Fall '97 to Spring '98 (Finally went posh and got A/C). I was off-campus from Summer of '98 to Fall '99. So if it was the year I was there, then it had to be '97 to '98. I could be wrong, but for my sanity's sake I hope I'm not. I remember my Hotard roommate telling me about it, which is why I believe it was the year I was there, but perhaps he told me about it after I was already gone.
*Must retain memories!*

And the statement is:
Hotard Hall! Your girlfriend knows where it is. I even have the T-shirt (my brother was in Hotard from '92 to '96).

Spud was the maniac in Walton, 3rd floor of G-Spot, who cost us funding for a parent's weekend event when he yelled, "I want to ---- you like an animal!" at some coed who was riding her bike in the area. I guess she complained about it.

Northside dorms are more than just buildings, they are institutions. To those who can't understand, equate them to your corps outfit or your fraternity. How would you feel if your outfit was getting disbanded or your fraternity was losing its charter?

I could be good for a few shirts, unfortunately I'm up in Dallas and don't get down to CS very often. I do plan to make it down for the Maroon & White game, and I'm sure a lot of other former Hilton residents are too. If the shirts were available that weekend, I'd buy one and I'm sure a lot of other people would as well.

Even without the political aspect, it would be nice to get a shirt that represents a part of my past.

The Northgate Post Office is getting pretty old. They shut post offices down all the time. If they ever decide to build a new office across the street at Northgate, that would definitely happen. Then how hard would it be for a new modular type dorm to be built on the post office and Hotard sites. It wouldn't affect Neeley or Hobby at all.
