Its not confined to atheism... people in general like to denigrate others for having a different opinion. Everyone should just stay away from other people's doors unless they're invited.

I'm pretty sure most of my family, acquaintances, and co-workers have no idea that I'm atheist. I have no reason to ever bring up religion because it is not apart of my life. The only people that actually know are close friends, and religion comes up so infrequently in conversation that even they might not realize. I assume that is the case for most atheists. The militant type atheists that you see on the internet are typically high school and college kids and individuals that have a significant axe to grind.

It does get a little awkward with patients when their families request I pray with them. I never refuse as they always assume I'm Christian, and usually just stand there holding hands with them without speaking. My default answer if ever asked about my religion is "I was raised Catholic", which is pretty obviously me stating that I'm atheist or agnostic, but seems to placate most.

I give the exact same "I was raised Christian" every time I get inappropriately asked about my religious beliefs in a professional setting. Also become adept at sitting there thinking about Chris Evans/Pratt/Hemsworth while waiting for the prayers to be over.

I would rather deal with a Jehovah Witness because they go away after they try to get me to conform. A atheist will never approach me to try to persuade me to conform but uses the legal system to force conformance.
