Going for a wedding in a few weeks. Going two days early to check out the area. Any cool spots or things to do while I am there?

Go north to Mooresvile and Norris lake. The end.

Just got back from there Tuesday. I was kind of surprised at how boring it was. We were only there on the bookends of our trip as we flew in there to drive to Kiawah Island, SC. We checked out the Panthers stadium, walked downtown a bit, went to NoDa (a trendy little area), and Uptown. That was about it. There aren't really any landmarks or interesting nature. And I wasn't really into visiting the NASCAR hall of fame. Not my kind of thing.

The best pizza I've had is at Luigis in Charlotte. That was 20+ years ago.

This. It's basically the East Coast equivalent of Houston.

Not sure what area of Charlotte I went to for work, it's been almost 10 years, but boring would be exactly how I describe the look of that city.

As a larger city, it's about as boring as can be. I'd venture out to the countryside which is pretty. Go north to the lake as one poster above said and could also check out places like Hickory.

Not, Atlanta is the East Coast equivalent of Houston. Charlotte is more like Atlanta, Jr.

Connecting in Charlotte/Douglas is one of the worst experiences one can go through.

Leave Charlotte and go the Smokies. Grandfather Mountain is about 2 hours away. If the weather's good the view is breathtaking.

There's a good hike in Linville Gorge. The waterfalls are really cool.

This guy gets it. I keep driving to Charlotte basically because it's the closest IKEA.

I was in Charlotte for the first time for work a few months ago and my wife tagged along, so we decided to spend a couple extra days exploring the town. As others have mentioned, there really isn't a lot to do.

We are not NASCAR fans and have never even watched a race on TV, but since there wasn't really anything else to do we decided to go to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and ended up having a great time. The exhibits and interactive activities were really good and we spent 4-5 hours there.

I don't think Sherman burned Charlotte, which I guess means there is no good part to Charlotte.

You are correct. He and his forces stayed well east of Charlotte. I guess the place is just naturally dull.

I think Sherman's actual words were, "No, hold on. Let's not waste a match on this one."

It's a city built on banking, so expect nothing interesting or exciting and you won't be disappointed. Asheville and Greenville have a lot more character.

Where do you go for BBQ? we have 2 hours to wait on the rest of our party when we fly there to go to Clemson.

The interwebs say Millwood Smokehouse.

Drive north to Lexington and get your BBQ there. You might miss your flight but it'll be worth it.

yep - get to Blowing Rock and hit the Blue Ridge parkway for some gorgeous views and better temps. You can overnight in Asheville on the way back if you like craft beer and hippies. If you go to Asheville head to the Grove Park Inn for drinks on the terrace.

DO NOT EAT THE BBQ. It's not brisket but all pulled pork. In a nasty vinegar sauce.

Flew in there for a South Carolina game. Other than a mighty fine soul food restaurant downtown we didn't see anything interesting.

And it's delicious. If you have an opportunity to try North Carolina barbecue, definitely do so. No, it is a Texas BBQ. But it is good.

I could have it every day if I desired, but I don't. They opened a Dickie's near me a few years ago. Maybe the original location was special, but I felt the brisket at the chain locations is overpriced for what you get. Regardless, the location didn't survive very long here.

Some places in NC might be able to do ribs well, like The Pit in Raleigh. But smoking some pork and then throwing it in a vinegar bath afterwards is straight up trash.

The minor league baseball stadium is top notch with solid view of downtown Charlotte. If I was there for days I would hit up the NASCAR museum and some Carolina style BBQ a baseball game and then head out to Asheville or something. Asheville is amazing

There are plenty of vineyards, breweries, and golf courses. There is the NC cheese trail, abundance of parks, and other outdoor activities.

Though it's a city just like any other city.

Do the bbq experience just to say you have. A brewery tour is a good way to see the sites and taste fun beers. Grab a seat on the Trolly Pub and meet some new friends.

Could also catch the Amtrack to Durham, watch a Durham Bull's game, eat and drink well. Durty Bull Brewery, Fullsteam Brewery, Bull City Burger and Brewery...

This post is straight-up trash. You may not like it... but come on, man, this is just like any other type of BBQ. Some is good and some isn't. And some may not be to your liking.

No, the premise behind dousing perfectly good meat in vinegar is garbage. We're not talking Dickey's vs. any place in the hill country here. The cuisine out of the textile corridor of America is largely nothing to write home about, but what some folks in NC do to barbecue is criminal (they do hush puppies well, I'll give them that).
