Working for the State (aka A&M) we will not get anything--no merit, no bonus--aka NOTHING.

If I could talk with the recent graduates of TAMU I would tell them to resist the urge to come to work for A&M. Life is much better out in the corporate world--Do not come to work for A&M, you will have a lifetime of regret if you do.

My dept does merit, but not everyone gets it

My company does bonuses only for facility GM's and facility sales managers, so we're talking about a dozen or so people in the company get bonuses.

I've been there 4 years and gotten a 15-20% raise every year, 17% this year. Typical raise is 2-3%, but I've gotten pretty big promotions each year. I used to feel underpaid, now I'd have a hell of a time finding a similarly paying job any closer to the house.

They were really ****ing you 4 years ago. You should negotiate better up front.

I switched companies this year. Went from 5 bonuses a year to just 1.

I miss bonuses.

Somewhat. I had a very specialized degree with no work experience other than working as a research assistant at the University. I applied and interviewed for 8 months before getting that offer. I was not particularly open to moving to one of the metro areas, so I didn't have much choice.

So I was definitely hired cheaply, but my individual responsibilities have grown by an insane amount. We've grown by a huge amount each year. My division was doing around $10MM when I was starting out, now I work at the national level on $200MM of business and my home division is doing $60MM of that.

The year I was promoted to bonus level back in 1999 we got just over $12,000 which was just about the max for folks at my level.
Before that those supervisors could set their mortgage payment up on it because it was reliable and the plant hit those goals every year.
In 2000 they cut it in half.
In 2001 they made a bonus completely out of reach.
In 2002 they cut them out.
2003 they quit 401k match.
There you go.
My only bonus story.

Didn't realize you were young. Good job.

In every negotiation one party has the leverage. Gotta figure out which one you are. When you're out of college and need the experience it's the company that has the leverage.

We get ours mid Feb.

I have worked for over 20 years and have realized that bonus is only loosely correlated to how I have performed. Much depends on my boss's insecurity, company performance, how much he wants me to stay, how much he thinks he can get away with no giving, etc etc.

Some years ago, I decided that I don't GAF anymore. Much happier since. If I get it, I pocket it. Else I don't care. I have other sources of income.

We used to get about 2-3% of our annual salary every year. Then we Went through a merger and don't get a damn thing now.

I have buddies that work for a major refinery that have their house payments set up yearly. Bonus comes in and they make a large payment for the year (like a farm loan).

I worked there before and the oldest guys said that bonus had never not been paid out. They had "raise freezes" before but even in the worst of times for O&G the bonus is paid out.

No. I left on my own terms during a RIF that hit in 2006. A few years later they closed one of four US plants.
It could very easily been the one I had worked at for over 8 years.

Mine sucks. It's half what I got last year. I also made half what I made last year. They put me in a problem location because I have developed a reputation as a fixer, but the owners aren't willing to pony up what it would take to truly fix things.

I have a halfway decent chance to really clean up
in the 1st quarter of 2019. If I can't make it work, or they aren't willing to do what is necessary to get things going, even for the short term, I am gone to the competition. That's hard for me to even think about, because at the heart of it, my job is an excellent gig. I have been exceedingly loyal to them while I watched peers with fewer skills pass me,only because of the assignment they were given.

I hope it all works out, but one way or another, things will change in 2019.

I'm thankful for whatever I get. I work for a publicly traded company and we have had a very successful run, thanks to good leadership and sound business practices. Previously, I worked for a private company and we got a $300 gift card. I was thankful for that too because it helped buy Christmas presents for the kids. This year, I was able to send my daughter to Europe for two weeks and almost pay off a vehicle. I can't complain in the least.

To be clear, I too am truly thankful for anything the owners of my company have chosen to share with me. I don't want it to seem like I am not appreciative in any way. I want the emphasis to be that I will do what I can in the future to make the changes necessary to succeed.
