They are drug addicts. Just that simple. I never did it because I was so embarrassed and disgusted that my parents did. All my siblings did, but 2 of the 4 were smart enough to quit.

Your graphic says South and Midwest, but anecdotally, I have found it's more prevalent the further East you go in the US. I remember going to a wedding in Philadelphia and being shocked at the numbers of smokers.

Smokers are litterbugs. There shouldn't be filters on cigarettes anymore because they wind up on the ground and they don't bio-degrade like an old fashioned hand rolled cigarette.

What I wish I understood is why Goose when he's sober knows full well that smoking cigarettes has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. They're expensive, horrible for your health, they make you and your clothes and breath stink, stain your teeth, etc. But Goose when he's good and drunk thinks smoking cigarettes is really cool and fun. What's up with that...???

Smoking is a tacky, trashy habit.

I wish all cigarette smokers would at least switch to pipes. They're cooler looking, generally smell better and are reusable.

All smokers (nearly all), begin as kids to look cool / fit in. Most kids get sick when first starting tobacco use, so it's that important to them that they look cool / fit in.

After becoming nicotine addicted the fun begins........bad for health - lungs, heart, oral, other respiratory, etc

Bad socially - you stink, you need to get away from people / situations to smoke, you hang out with other losers who smoke, you become fidgety in social settings when you can't use tobacco, non tobacco users avoid you like the plague, etc.

The unnecessary expenses - a pack a day + lighters + gum / mouthwash (to conceal funk) + time loss (buying cigs, smoking cigs, etc) + higher health insurance & health care costs, etc

Btw, Thank God I'm tobacco-free since April 22, 2011.

I think they would get even more young people to never start (especially males) if they informed them of an even MORE prevalent cancer than lung cancer.

Bladder cancer's # 1 leading cause is smokers.

While generally not as deadly as lung cancer, a video of how it is treated will likely sway many to walk away.
These treatments sometimes have to be repeated up to 30+ times.

Just about everyone in our shop smokes. I don't get it. They don't make much money to begin with, why spend what little you have on cigarettes.

It has to be an intensely addictive habit, because very bright and otherwise educated people still do it. Charlie Baxter, the guy who formulated the Parkland Burn Formula (also known as the Baxter Formula) was a smoker, and he had been burned twice, including once while he was smoking. He spend his life around burn victims, was a physician, and suffered a burn directly related to his habit. It would be hard to imagine someone who should know better, but there it is. He died of pneumonia.
As an ENT doctor, I see people all of the time who have destroyed their lives by smoking. Chemotherapy and radiation are AWFUL for head and neck patients.

I started smoking pretty much out of self defense in early college cuz my friends smoked. I quit a few years later after my son was born.

This was my dad's first type of cancer from smoking. I can assure you the treatment wasn't fun. (bladder)

I don't even know if he stopped smoking after that. I know he did at one point. Apparently once or twice a year he goes and buys a pack, smokes one or two and throws it away. He "quit" smoking I think at least 10 years ago and still craves it almost daily.

I too don't understand the people who do it daily. But, to each their own I guess.

The op asked why people do it. Clearly he has never done it, so I explained it.

I have had maybe 10 cigs in my life. Who knows if I'll ever have another. They are bad for you, gross, etc. But the question was why. Glad to know you can't read.
