It's not just the paycheck. I'm overseas and AFN is off the air due to it. For me it's just a minor inconvenience but for guys in a combat zone and it's one of the few "reminders of home". Hate to see if the MWR and stuff are shutdown as well.

AFN being down sucks because it's the only English radio station here. Commissaries are closed. Exchanges are funded separably so they stay open. All active duty remain in a duty status, but if Congress doesn't allocate funds by the end of the month, there won't be a pay check. Given that, USAA has in the past said that if the government doesn't have a solution in place, USAA will offer 0% interest advance payroll loans.

The only way the government gets going again is if they agree to build a wall to keep you from escaping to Mexico, so that's kind of a catch 22.

There are very few ESSENTIAL Govt jobs IMO.
I think the govt payroll could shrink by half and be just as inefficient as they are now.

DOD employee here. Not too worried about the "free day off" ('cause I have a feeling they'll settle on another CR sometime tomorrow). I know the back-pay will likely come.

It's bad enough operating under a CR so much, but this really has set some schedules in a tailspin.

Oh, and last time we had a furlough, we did NOT get back-pay. It was ~2013 and it may have just been DOD that was affected (maybe caused by sequestration?!) Anyway, that did suck. Hate politicians.
