I'm doomed. Both of my grandpas were skinny as rails and got diabetes.

Less doomed than me since a parent and sibling of mine have it.

Do any of you fellow diabetes sufferers sometimes just say "***k it!", and go eat a steaming plate of greasy enchiladas, or fried chicken, or a big bowl of pasta, or a pizza?

I'm getting really tired of eating the same old stuff. I've got the Atkins book, and the Type 2 Diabetes Cookbook, and I'm doing a good job of not falling off the wagon, but dammit to hell, I would cut a ***** for some enchiladas right now.

A lot of people font realize there are more than just type 1 and type 2. I, for example, am LADA
meh
easy and practical way to look at is, theres insulin dependent diabetes mellitus & non-IDDM

And then there's me. Non conforming. Currently non insulin dependent, but I will be.

I do occasionally, but it usually follows up a day or 2 of good sugars and crazy healthy meals the day of.

I don't have the beetus, but I generally follow a diet of healthy eats all week and pick a day to have something I really enjoy. I don't eat many carbs during the week and if I do it's usually at breakfast so it's generally pizza, tacos or enchiladas for my fat kid Friday meal . It's all about moderation and finding what works for your body.

I've been a Type 1 since I was eleven. Last A1C was 4.4. I'm not on a pump, either. My success is purely due to diet, insulin, and exercise - in that order.

Highest A1C I've had in 11 years was 5.8 and it happened only once. The rest of my tests have been consistently at 5.2. This last A1C was a little lower than usual, but I believe 4.4 is where I should be.

I had an eye exam today. That was sobering. My vision is significantly less than what it was at this time last year. It is what it is. I will try to maintain via exercise and 2 doses of metformin / day.

When I was first diagnosed type 2 about seven years ago I went to Consumer Reports before investing in a meter, and found that Wal-Mart's ReliOn brand was a best buy. And I'm faithful about testing my meter every time I open a new box of strips. I must be doing something right. After supper (two slices of pizza, one pizza roll, and a small piece of ice box strawberry pie) my glucose two hours later was 179. It was 114 before breakfast. Fiber. Get as much fiber in your diet as possible. Complex carbohydrates are your best friend. Simple carbs are like putting a rolled up newspaper in the fireplace, while complex ones are like burning good hardwood.

My doc wants me to eat 6-9 eggs a day plus avacado and Roma tomatoes. Also do all my meats in a crock pot with water, salt and pepper and that is sbout it. Mostky green veges except for okra. And cheese is ok so that helps a bit. Plus almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. My A1C was over 10 so will be interesting to see next report. I was worried about liver and kidney function but all good. Also eye doctor didn't see any evidence of diabetes during eye exam. Only history in my family that I am aware of was an aunt. Wishing all on here the best with their struggle with this. It's been an eye opening few months. Not sure how I will handle football Saturdays at a&m now in regards to food and drink. Tailgates aren't the best in that regard.
Get an electric pressure cooker. It will save you a ton of time, you can brown the meat in it, and it all tastes much better.

You can also steam your veggies in it too.

Best small kitchen appliance ever.

So just want to add, if you get a type 2 diagnosis GO TO THE ENDO! I trusted my primary care physician and did all the diet and exercise stuff. Worked for a time but my A1C kept climbing up. Doc's solution was more and more pills. None seemed to help.

I finally went to the endo, took her about 5 minutes of looking at my medical history, my physical build to guess I was type LADA not type 2. Later confirmed with labs.

Go to the endo.

As someone who has battled diabetes for the past 20ish years, work extra hard to control that a1c, you DO NOT WANT NEUROPATHY!!!! Neuropathy is a side effect of T2 diabetes and it's a beetch. Terrible pain in legs and feet, I'm not bed ridden, but not far from it. I wear a pain patch 24/7, take Hydrocodone 2 or 3 times per day, Neurotin and Elevil daily also. On days when my pain is less, I'm soo drugged up, I can barely function. Getting up to take a leak is tough some days, because I can barely walk from the drugs in my system. My quality of life is almost nonexistent. Pay attention to your doctors and avoid this *****

I have that horrible pain in my left fingers, legs, and feet. I'm not bed ridden, but I might as well be because of the stupid rod in my leg and pins in my ankle. I can't take hydrocodone because I allergies to Tylenol, aspirin, and ibuprofen. I take 3 Neurontin a day. I pretty much just deal with the pain until I can sleep.
