""That was a great (spacewalk) and it showed that Aggies can be taught to work locks, latches and anything else," flight controllers wrote in their daily morning electronic message to Discovery's crew, referring to Fossum, a graduate of Texas A&M. "Miracles never cease.""

President George W. Bush offered his best wishes to the crews of NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station Tuesday, July 11. In a private phone call from the White House at 10:35 a.m. EDT, the president told the astronauts that they represent the best of service and exploration, and he thanked them for the job they are doing.

Well, it looks like we have 5 yell leaders coming for yell practice at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, at The Outpost on Egret Bay near NASA Rd. 1. Happy hour starts at 6:00 p.m. This is being distributed to NASA and Contractor Aggies via email but I'm sure all Aggies are invited.

Does anyone have a link to an audio file of the War Hymn wakeup this morning for the shuttle crew and Mike's response? I was up at the time but missed hearing it.

I also have an MP3 of the yell leaders talking to Mike yesterday from mission control and doing BTHOTU that was posted to the NASA Aggies distribution list.

How to I link to it? Do I need to post it to someplace like Imageshack for MP3 files?

Here are some shots from last night's yell practice for Mike at The Oupost in Webster. I would estimate the turnout at 150 - 200. Enough to make some noise! We did a few yells and sang The Spirit to close out the night. I think it's the start of a new tradition!

Mission elapsed time was 12 days, 18 hours, 36 minutes and 54 seconds. The landing is the 62nd at Kennedy Space Center and the 32nd for Discovery.

Teaching the astronomy merit badge in the Scouts seeded his interest in space, Terry Fossum said. He described his brother as goal-oriented and persistent.

He'd been passed up for at least two other missions.

"His bosses were telling him at NASA, 'You're too old. Give it up; you're not going to be an astronaut,'" Terry Fossum said. "His answer was, 'No, I don't know that.'"

The payoff showed in the note he sent before coming home, describing how he was "silenced by the beauty of God's creation as it rolls under our ship" and thankful for his "profoundly tolerant" wife and four kids.

And how he was "humbled by this opportunity of a lifetime."

One of Discovery's two astronauts who conducted a spacewalk, Mike Fossum, had a large following in the hangar. A Texas A&M University graduate, he became the first Aggie to fly in space. Maroon T-shirts were in abundance. Fossum told the crowd he "whooped" — a popular Aggie cheer — during Discovery's launch.

"I've also got to say thanks to my church friends," he said. "Thank you for your prayers — they worked."
