I use Apple TV which I prefer over roku devices. I also use Sling TV during football season so I can watch the Aggies. One thing I would add about Apple TV is that if you own an iPhone, anything you see on the iPhone can be displayed on your tv with ease.

We're happy with it. For $50 we have 90% of the live TV we watched with U-verse. Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HAD Antenna for local HD round out our set up.

So $70ish for internet, plus $50 for Sling.....that's $10 less than I pay for DirecTV and Internet (after taxes fees, etc). But with DirecTV i get everything, plus DVR.

I want to 'cut the cord'...but it doesnt seem worth it yet.

Great.

We had U-verse and it was north of $300. They didn't want to do deals unless they could move you to satellite. I don't want anything to do with satellite.

It saves us $200 a month in a convenient set up to still get live TV.

My DirecTv was about to go up to 140 a month, and internet was at 35 at the time. They weren't really wanting to give me any kind of deal, so I cancelled. Now I'm at 35 a month for PSVue, and 55 for unlimited internet. Plus 10 a month for Netflix, but I had that when I had DirecTv, also.

We switched from Uverse to netflix and amazon prime this past year. It's probably better for watching kids shows, and the little bit of time we have to watch our tv shows and movies. It saves money and we didn't have much time to watch TV anyway.

I do really miss sports though. Maybe some day when I stop constantly impregnating my wife I'll have time again to watch all the sports I want.

We had Sling to watch all of the ESPN channels, but I don't recommend it. It's not user friendly at all, you can't flip back-and-forth between ESPN stations easily, the connection frequently was lost, and the HD reception was sporadic.

They just did an update that changed the menu interface. I like it quite a bit and rarely have buffering issues. They still don't have a back/last button, but if you go to the menu the first category is previous shows watched.

I was with Uverse too, and was really hesitant to go with DirecTV...but so far, so good.

I miss Uverse though. They've got the best interface around.

What has Nick and Disney? I could cut cable, but kids will drive me nuts with their demand for those channels.

Won't matter. With any type of cable (including Sling, PSVue, DTVNow, etc...) you will have a login that gets you full access to the 6 or so Nick and Disney apps on a Roku or Fire TV. It's all on demand on those apps. Once your kids start using that they likely won't ever watch live tv again. Mine haven't watched live TV in 6+months because of those apps.

Your setup is pretty much exactly what I'm looking at getting. Any channels you wish you had? How's the cloud based dvr?
Uncle Howdy

Not that I can think of. I get all of the ESPN channels, plus I think CBS sports and maybe FS1. I also think NFL network was added a few months ago to my package. Then I get USA, FX, and FXX.

If you're a college basketball fan, last year they added on TruTV for free during the tournament so you could watch whatever game you wanted.

You can get the movie channels added for 10-15 a month if that's your kind of thing, also.

Forgot to answer the DVR question. I honestly haven't used it a whole lot, but it took some getting used to at first but I really don't mind it. If I miss something that I really want to see then I'll find a way to watch it

Just a head's up, but a couple of months back PS Vue dropped all Viacom channels, so no Nick or Comedy Central.

I pay the same for 25mbps, so that's a smoking deal. Is it on contract or month to month?

It's a 1yr contract (I believe)...but full price is $60

still not bad considering you can stream HD on several devices with that speed (assuming you're actually downloading at that speed - I'd be interested in seeing their real world numbers).
mt3950
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agreed. I'm betting it's closer to 50-75mbps, but even at that speed it should be more than I need.

Update:

We've been using FireTV and Fire stick with PSVue and Netflix for a few days now. We changed internet service from uverse to at&t fiber which should give us ~100mbps for $50. Getting rid of uverse tv, receiver charges, etc will cut our bill by at least $90 per month. We have all of the channels we normally watch and the DVR service with Vue works well. Definitely worth it. I wouldn't consider this "cutting the cord"...it's much closer to what you'd experience justswitching providers.

Side note, the FireTV is definitely a better device than Firestick. Not as portable, but the processor is much faster. I'm very happy with the switch so far.

Already using Netflix and amazon prime. We had DirecTV on one TV in the living room and used Roku Apps to watch stuff in the bedroom. Directv bill was $80 per month, and I was already contemplating cutting. They upped the bill to $100 and made the decision easy. Switched to PSVue for $35 per month and put my antenna in the attic using the coax directv had wired for me a few years ago. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner. Saving $65 per month and can watch live TV on 5 devices now.

Cough up the $90 and get the real fire tv player. It blows my fire sticks out of the water on speed.

No matter what job I ever have, I'm not going to want to piss away money. Especially on something not worth bragging about like cable.

For any of you using Firestick w/ Kodi....How secure do you feel about the third party apps like Exodus?

I've thought about it, but I wonder if I'd be exposing myself to some nasty malware that tags along with the app.
