I know if you'd seen her you'd tell me 'cause you are my friend
I've got to find her and find out the trouble she's in
If you tell me that she's not here I'll follow the trail of her tears
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis

I have heard from locals that there are "better" options that aren't as touristy... However I thought Rendezvous for Memphis style ribs was great. And touristy or not, the lay out of the place was very cool.

And when I was told that we had to go to a Fried chicken place, I thought my buddy had lost his mind. But Gus's fried chicken is legit.

And you can trust me on food.... I'm fat.

There are better options than Rendezvous, but I think it is worthwhile for a first timer. Go upstairs, grab a cheap plastic cup of Ghost River, and chat with the bartender before heading back downstairs for your meal.

I wasn't that impressed with Rendezvous. I'm not a food snob or anything, but I don't like sweet tasting ribs.

It's nothing fancy, but I always liked Huey's

Where to avoid? It will be obvious I'm afraid.

Good suggestions so far.

Avoid really anything beyond a 5 or 6 block radius from Union or Beale after dark. There are a lot of cool restaurants, museums, etc that are on or really close to Beale, especially if you're a fan of history or music. But I was surprised at how fast that city turns into a sheethole when you start waking away from the touristy area.

Rendezvous is decent (if you can find the super-secret entrance down some dark alley...don't worry, the homeless crackheads will direct you to it.) Blues City Cafe and BB King's restaurant were good as well, I thought. Spend the day visiting a music museum or two, take a tour of the Gibson factory, walk down to the Lorraine Motel. I never made it to Graceland....so I don't if that's worth it. Spend the night bar-hopping down Beale to listen to live music.

Skip Rendezvous and go to Central BBQ near the Memphis campus.

Wife & I have spent every Valentine's Day weekend in Memphis for the past 8 years straight after getting snowed in there on V-day 2008 while connecting through the airport. (yes, snowed in in Memphis). Just fell in love with that city.

Hang out in the Peabody Hotel lobby and drink at their bar.

Yes, Gus' Fried Chicken for lunch.

Rendevous is amazing - never can fathom anyone who would pick Corky's or Central over them, but to each his own. Ask for Calvin at Rendevous and expect free pitchers of beer that won't appear on your check. Just take good care of him.

Rum Boogie Club on Beale, just get there early for a table and they close early too, Once they close, go to BB King's.

For breakfast, The Arcade diner. Old 50's diner that hasn't changed a bit since Elvis ate there all the time.

Those gumbo fries are honestly the only reason I am happy that I went there for the Liberty Bowl. They are that good.

It blows my mind that anyone would go to Memphis as a tourist and NOT go to Graceland. Many hotels can get you free passes. Even if you're not a fan, it's a great museum of 1960's and '70's era new money excess.

Isn't "where the black people are" a general rule of where to avoid? I can't think of one city in the US where this isn't true.

The more "taste" deficient one is, the more one will probably enjoy Graceland.

Persons of refined taste should 'consider carefully' before touring Elvis' digs; they might have a heart attack.

Some good suggestions on this thread. Central BBQ, BBQ Shop, Germantown Commissary all good for BBQ.

I don't like Rendezvous as much and as a resident it wouldn't be my choice but I would recommend a visitor go there to experience it and the food is good and unique atmosphere.

Gus' Chicken is superb. Try it if you can.

Beale is fun, good clubs and food. Sage advice earlier to stick to Beale and immediate surrounding area and don't venture too far off, particularly South or East of Beale.

Overton Square in Midtown is revitalized after years of being neglected. some great local restaurants and hangout spots there.

Graceland is in the hood but its a good tour even if you aren't a big fan of Elvis. Peabody Lobby bar was an excellent suggestion to just have some drinks, chill, and people watch. Worlds largest BassProShops just opened in the Pyramid downtown.

Have fun.

Avoid houses with boarded up windows with old men on the porch drinking from plastic cups with bone thin chicks in tank tops gesturing erratically.

It didn't turn out well for me when I stopped to ask directions.

Just don't loan your car to any chick who is shaking uncontrollably.

She was NOT the home owner and nobody even knew her name.

Hell, I lived there for a year and didn't go.
