That is the Khumbu Icefall. Where most people that die on Everest meet their maker. Scariest part is that it is most of the time not due to climber error. When a 5 story block of ice decides to let go, your number just got pulled. To summit, most people have to cross this groaning ever changing glacier 5-6 times as they go up and down on acclimatization climbs.

Why would you want to ride a bike for 100 miles? It's kind of like that, but on a whole other level. It's a sense of accomplishment, conquering nature, pushing your body to its limits, testing yourself to see what you are made of.

Good book, but you should also read Anatoly Boukreev's version of the events that day too to get the other side(The Climb) I am midway through Beck Weathers' book "Left for Dead" and plan to read one from the Lead Sherpa there too.
