The long term answer is Trap Neuter Release. By catching strays and having them fixed, you stabilize the population. The cats' presence helps keep new cats away. The ones that are there don't breed, are healthier, less aggressive, etc.

In some instances, maybe. But it worked for us. To be clear, I'm not doing this currently. This was at my family's place when I was in high school. Once we got rid of them, it was done. Nor did other feral cats "take over" the territory once we eradicated the locals that were frequenting our place.

Also, your solution doesn't address the impact that feral cats and strays have on local bird, small animal, and game populations.

TNR flat out does not work as advertised. Within two years, TNR and non-TNR colonies are effectively the same size, and as stated does nothing to curb their ecological damage. Just spent several days seeing the current research on the matter.

I wouldn't doubt it. My border collie was a rescue, and she routinely gets put in her place by our cat. The cat can't catch a ball in the air or run 6 miles, and the dog is always excited to see me. So the dog wins. Those photos were taken last year I think.
