I didn't hire someone because he had "Texas A&M University" on his resume, but actually went to the school in Commerce.

My Texas A&M diploma omitted the Oxford comma. I guess that's what I get for graduating Recreation, Park & Tourism Sciences.

TAMUS and TAMU omit the Oxford comma. If the motherland does it, so should we.

Someday I'll tell you about my HR fight about whether or not we could fire a guy for placing punctuation "outside the quotes".

Spoiler alert: yes, we could.

Now I know how those kids I used to beat up in grade school turned out.

My apologies everyone.

I didn't hire some dude to work on my team because he wore a beard. So what?
I got hired at my first job after graduating from A&M because I had a beard.

There were two applicants in a department where everyone had beards. There was no apparent reason to hire one of us instead of the other. Since I had a beard and the other candidate didn't, they felt I might fit in better with the department and I was hired.

To tell you the truth, logically, I actually think that the Euro styles that put punctuation outside of the quotation marks makes sense. If quotes are the grammatical version of parentheses, then you should finish the thought before ending the sentence. However, it's just awkward and confusing on the paper.

For example, I enjoy the logic of this construction versus the common American style standards, but it fails the eyeball test:

quote:
Nobody believed AgBeliever when he said he used to "beat people up".

The American standard can be a little awkward when finishing a question with a quotation mark:

quote:
Does anyone actually believe that AgBeliever actually ever "beat anyone up?"

The question mark doesn't really belong to AgBeliever's ridiculously unbelievable statement. On some level, it seems that quotation mark should be outside of the closing quote. But, since we are living in a society, and there is right and wrong, and the wrong must be punished for being slack-jawed, tree-humping louse-pickers.

I wasn't even aware that you needed to submit a resume to become a middle school English teacher. I always assumed it was the same fill in the blank form as McDonald's.

the metric system means less memorization of random units and therefore more time to eat burgers and drink beer. who is less american now?

Agree with almost everything Alias posted and think he might be the male version of me when it comes to being a grammar/punctuation Nazi

I once got a resume that listed a fake sorority, "Alpha Ki Omega." "Ki" is not in the greek alphabet.

I always punctuation inside of the quotation marks until I had been writing software for a while. The longer I wrote code and the more code I wrote, the more it made logically sense to put them outside the quotation marks.
