I'd draw the line a little bit west of Goose's. Start with Del Rio, then go to Sonora, just east of Abilene, then Wichita Falls. WF is iffy though. I kind of think of them as more North Texas.

My hometown. Just had a beerbread sandwich from Slovcek's and it was absolutely glorious! Best sandwich in existence- beer bread, shredded cheese, sausage links, sauerkraut and poppyseed mustard dressing. Pretty much heaven.

Shafter San Angelo is central if you have to drive 3 hours east from home to get there. I guess it's all perspective.

I'll go along with the "west of Abilene" definition. I've had a few East Texans try to tell me that Fort Worth is in West Texas. That's hilarious.

I grew up just north of San Angelo in Ballinger. Believe me, everyone in that area considers themselves to be West Texans. Same with people from Coleman and most people I know from Abilene. West Texas is defined by the climate and the attitude of the people. Besides 3 hours out there is nothing.

Draw a plus sign with college station at the center. East of that line is Easy Texas Hicks. West of that line is West Texas rednecks. North is damn Yankees. South is border trash

Anything west of Wichita Falls down to San Angelo = West Texas
Anything east of 59 = Louisiana
Anything south of I-10 = Mexico

FW is the gateway to west Texas just like St Louis is the gateway to the west.

Sure, if by "gateway" you mean "2 hours away from."
