When the mexican army took Galveston on April 16, 1836 they also took Emily. Santa Ana, upon first seeing her, claimed her for his own.
April 21st, just five days later, Gen Sam Houston with an army of 800, readied himself for the next attack against the mexican army of 1600. A spy was sent in with a message for Emily to protect herself for they would be attacking at siesta time. Emily decided on a different plan, instead of hiding she plotted to keep the general entertained and distracted during siesta. Her plan worked.

The Texas army, under the leadership of General Sam Houston, who the City of Houston is named after, attacked the Mexican army during siesta time.
With the river at their backs cutting off any hope of escape, the Texas army defeated the Mexican army with little effort.
Santa Anna was reported to have been in his tent "enjoying" the company of Emily Morgan.
Because it took so long for their general to get out of his tent and organize his men (due to 'the yellow rose') there was chaos when the attack occured. Without their leader, they scrambled unorganized into defeat. By the time Santa Ana realized what was happening and made it out of his tent the battle was over.

Seriously. . . I am baffled by the recent news of another violent death at the Emily Morgan Hotel, one of downtown’s finer hotels.

I have stayed at that hotel. It’s got a great view of the Alamo. Service is good. The restaurant is excellent. They have 50 cent martinis on Fridays. They have the romance package that comes with a romantic CD. I would venture to say it’s one of the most photographed of the downtown buildings. I would describe it as swanky. Yeah, it’s swanky.

Now, two deaths in four months?

I was coming back from an early dinner yesterday and saw the commotion. I caught Express-News reporter Michelle Mondo as she was heading back into the office. The Express-News building is less than a block away from the Emily Morgan. At that time, police hadn’t charged Justin Cardenas with manslaughter.

Then I remembered the murder back in April when a man named Juan Ignacio Gutierrez stabbed a woman named Elvira Hernandez-Moreno to death with a steak knife.

These two deaths are not good for downtown. But I would also say because both happened inside hotel rooms, that those situations could have happened at any hotel. And at least these deaths didn’t happen on the streets. That would be another issue all together — a public safety issue.
