Actually, it's a fail on your part. I don't see how you could've interpreted my op any differently.

Religion plays a pretty major role in politics and current events. I don't know why it's so hard to understand that people who don't follow any religion would want to discuss those things from a non-religious perspective with other non-religious minded people.

I don't care Tanya. The existence of your group bothers me because I personally would not care to participate in it.

My doubts and philosophical thoughts as an Atheist are shockingly similar to the thoughts I had as a devout Christian.

What's the best way to discuss my religious beliefs with people who view things differently?
How can I cope with this difficult situation I'm dealing with?

It would have been nice in college to get the perspective of people who were going through the same thing. Even now, I can't go to some friends for advice because I know their answer will be faith-based.

i disagree. BB did an excellent job answering that question though. I have friends who are athiest or agnostic, but for them, there was never a desire to seek out like-minded individuals for things they did NOT believe in or participate in. For example: they play golf, so they are on the golf team and do golf events. They don't do "anti-volleyball" or "i don't believe in basketball" clubs. This seemed pretty straight forward to me. I don't like yellow, so I don't wear yellow shirts, simple as that. I don't take time to talk about how I don't like yellow b/c it's a non-issue. Why bother?

HOWEVER, again as BB pointed out, sports and other things are trivial and religion (basically interchangable with Christianity) is not, as evidenced by politics, etc. Obviously, for some folks it is as easy as "meh, i don't believe in _____" or "meh, there might be, there might not be, don't really care" but apparently others it is not. Some have honest issues/concerns/thoughts/etc but I think to most who are not athiest, it often seems that those who are just have an axe to grind, which is maybe just b/c they are the most outspoken.

This works both ways. I don't care if you're religious. But I think that to most who are not religious, it often seems that those who are just have an axe to grind, which is maybe just because they are the most outspoken. Tim Tebow comes to mind.

You seem to conveniently leave out the 20th century where atheist/agnostic statists wiped out more people than all the religious wars in human history combined.

Utilitarianism is a much more dangerous than any person-centered ethical worldview. And it's a lot easier to use people as means to an end if there are no natural rights that originate from a power higher than humanity.

Sure, atheist/agnostic statists have killed a buttload of people, but they were also typically completely BSC dictators. Correlation is not causation. In the case of the terrorist blowing up a bus because Allah told him to, there is correlation - he did it because he thought his religion told him to. The people you're talking about committed atrocities in order to retain complete control.

My Senior year, I took a course called "Studies of the New Testament" at A&M. By chance I sat right next to two very interesting, highly intelligent individuals. One was the president of the Muslim Aggies and the other was president of the Athiest and Agnostic Aggies. Turns out that both of them knew more about the new testament than anyone else in the room other than the professor, even with half the class of 200 or so people saying they considered themselves Christians and highly religious. The professor (Stadlemann I think but it's been a few years) and the Athiest/Agnostic guy had debates on campus and were actually friends as a result.
I loved listening to the professor who was a retired pastor explain to the class how the english translation of parts of the new testament was debatable. Fun watching college kids freaking out when their personal beliefs based solely on what their parents and/or their pastor told them aout the Bible were challenged.

The ironic part about it all is that 50-60% of everyone who attends the meetings is a Christian who wants to debate them.
