I thought it was a little funny. Why is the university trying to interfere with an off campus party - I'm sure there are bigger fish to fry.

And the fact that it is MLK day doesn't matter. I rank thta right up there with Columbus Day and Lincoln's B-day. It's all a bunch of crap, and I don't get off of work, so who cares?

You really think the party is a good idea Keegan? Cant see any reason not to have it? Amazing.

I also dont really see your four examples as funny, especially if the entire theme for a party was "Al-Qaeda Night!" or "Pedophile Priests".

I really dont see how anyone who claims to be intelligent, rational, and aware of society can claim there is nothing wrong with this. A handful of people will scream "Whats wrong with this?!?!" (read: there's nothing wrong with me!) while the vast majority will explain why it is stupid, but the handful will never get it.

Big12Ag... sounds like you wouldn't have fun there... so don't go. There's all kinds of stuff you could do there that could be funny. Guys could wear "wife-beaters", you could wear clothes from the 80's or 70's, maybe wear some parachute pants or "Jams" or some such, and I'm sure some stereotyping will happen as all the above were. Stereotyping is human... Ags are stereotyped all the time and it doesn't bother me one bit - in fact we stereotype UT students all the time.

If you can't laugh at yourself that's your own problem. People in this country are just too PC. Grow up.

BTW... a "gomer" party would be pretty funny. People take things WAY too seriosly.

OK so the party might offend some. But it's not worth raising blood pressures over. I'm sure that if you jump high enough you can get over it. Kawanza offends the hell out of me, but I just make fun of it instead of cry about it.

I don't think you can compare a "white-trash" party to a "ghetto-party." I don't remember riots in Alabama over the oppression of hillbillies.

(I am not saying anything about this specific story because I haven't read it, and I don't the details.)

I would think it is in bad taste. Maybe it is light hearted. But the fact remains that it is a racially sensetive issue. At the very least, it is unwise. Right or wrong, too sensetive or not, you KNOW if you theme a party around a minority stereotype, you will catch hell.

I do not condone actions labeled as a get-together which perpetuate the division between blacks and whites in our society, and I have not seen the flyers mentioned by the Craptalion, but I do have to ask whether the University and the Batt are perpetuating racial steretypes by assuming that the words Ghetto Party indicate that blacks are a targeted group. Ghettos have been around longer than the US has, in the past in Europe, Ghettos housed Jewish people. Also, is it almost time for the words african-american to quit being used or to start using the words caucasian-american? I don't know how you can look at someone and assume that they are a citizen of the americas. Finally, Jesse Jackson has gone the way of Trent Lott because he identified himself as a religious leader and offered marital advise to Bill Clinton, and then showed his true self by having an extra-marital affair. So in conclusion, this country has two rules which should keep most whites out of trouble, one, don't make fun of black people because past idiot americans thought that slavery wasn't immoral, and don't make fun of native americans because past idiot americans killed most of them and stole their land. I did neither.

No question...bad taste by the Walton folks. I'm appalled that somebody could even think for an instant that this was a good idea. If that weren't disturbing enough, some ignoramuses on this board are actually defending their decision.

A white fraternity throwing a white trash party is also poor taste but not newsworthy. However, a predominantly white student population throwing a 'ghetto party' smacks of a deep-seeded racism that I can barely fathom.

Folks...this is not OK and the university was right to step in when they did. If not, instead of being a local story, we would soon be hearing it on the national news.

I wonder why A&M has trouble recruiting a diverse student population? Would you not think twice? This story does nothing but give fuel to outsiders who think A&M is a "red-neck" school. Maybe instead of Vision 2020, we should be concentrating on Vision 1965.

I completely understand the possibility that it was not "intended" to be racially motivated, or done in a hateful manner. My point is just that even if it wasn't, something like this WILL GET this kind of attention. So, it is probably not a wise thing to do, and someone of average intelligence should have seen that coming.

This just goes to prove that if minorities don't feel comfortable on this campus, it must be their fault.

My experience, those parties were a good-natured skewering of racial stereotypes. It was certainly not a mean spirited event meant to denigrate African Americans. In a way, it is a very progressive type of race relations where there is not a wedge of over-sensitivity driven between us. I will admit, that having it around MLK day doesn't attest to that, and in concept it is certainly in poor taste. However, what it was in reality is much more benign than it seems. And certainly there were people of many races involved.

I'm not saying the party is a good idea.

But the only reason I see it as a bad idea is because of the negative fallout it will generate due to the reaction from the hypersensitive PC crowd. The party itself was all inclusive and not a place where racial hatred was incited or tolerated. If anything, seeing an African American student wearing a Klan hat mocks the KKK.

It's certainly no more offensive than an Asian Heritage Day on December 7th (which was officially sponsored by a campus organization), but we all know that was perfectly fine.

I can't imagine what would happen if the movie Blazing Saddles came out today.

I saw Blazing Saddles in the MSC. That was the most fun I have ever had at a movie.

I guess it was Rudder Theater actually...

Having parties such as this seems VERY backward to me. And we joke about OU and Bama being backward...

This is sad and cannot do anything but hurt our efforts to improve both in academics and athletics. What are these guys thinking?

Big12Ag and the rest who are so upset about this... You may say I'm in the minority, but I would beg to differ. I think everyone would find this funny but most are just to scared to admit it because we're all supposed to be PC.

Stereotypes are funny... they've been used by comedians for ages (and the comedians usually make fun of their own stereotype... fat people make fun of being fat, hispanics make hispanic jokes/gringo jokes, etc). Live and let live... I have nothing against other races, but you've got to admit that EVERY race can me made fun of and it is funny... I'm a white man and guess what - I can't jump. It's all in good fun.

I wonder what the reaction would be if the black students had a party where they acted like stereotyped Walton residents.

buildthehell02
How long do you want to ignore this user?
you have to consider that they were planning this as a party among probably less than 30 friends, of all races, who would just go and have a good time together. You don't really consider how it's going to affect Vision 2020 when you're planning a party for a handful of people. The University is creating their own problem by taking something that involved a very small group, not even officially related to the University and waving it around on a flagpole.
ArlingtonAg-99

Wouldn't it be a stereotype to assume that all residents in Walton are "white trash"?
InfantryAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
party sounds to be in bad taste, especially the date. However I am extremely offended by people who would deny these peoples rights to do what they wish. If you think these people are ignorant so be it. who cares what they do if they are not breaking the law or denying someone elses liberty? Why do we just not burn books that offend us?

Although I can't stand the klan or the hippie protesters. I would never deny their liberty to do as they please so long as they do not violate someone elses liberty.

Look at issues using logic and don't interject your personnal feelings.
