How does it have such a large following when it's geared towards a relatively small market - liberal wannabe hipsters who live in Austin and graduated from UT-Austin, and recent California transplants who want to learn how to be a Texan without having to eat meat or pull a lever for a Republican.

And what's the fascination with West Texas? Especially Marfa. It seems 1/3 of their articles involve either Marfa, TX or UT-Austin.

What a joke of a magazine.

I used to have a subscription, and for the most part enjoyed the magazine. Could you list some examples?

quick review of the website yields first three articles about fishing, Cornyn, and 50 Greatest Hamburgers in Texas.

It wants to be known as the "New Yorker" magazine of the Southwest.

Do you really, really think hipsters read magazines? Especially magazines geared towards old people that are 2/3 full of ads for stuff they can't even afford?

A lesson for you: Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's liberal. That's not how things work.

Marfa is so overrated. The only people who might enjoy it are the ultra artsy people or those that think they are...basicly the type of person who writes for TM.

I can only imagine how many people who have made the road trip just to get out there and say "REALLY!?!? This is what the hype was about?!?!"

Magazines are geared to the part of the population that is likely to purchase the magazine and patronize its advertisers. Texas Monthly has always targeted a certain market segment in both its content and its advertising, and they're still in business, so it must be working for them. In other words, they don't care if they don't win a TexAgs popularity poll because it would not add a single dime to their bottom line if they did.

I've subscribed to TM since the early 80's and it sustained me when I lived in Alabama and Louisiana (2x).

It is not that bad. Take the slanted articles for what they are - slanted articles.

It is a really good way for me to stay up with Texas happenings from 700 miles away.

chris madrids has no business on that list. their signature burger is average, and if I put 20 lbs of cheese on my burger it would taste great too.

I have been getting it now for like 4 years. I think some articles are good, a few bad and a few excellent.

You can tell the liberal slant when you read about politics, but for a magazine, it does a pretty good job of hitting both sides and showing both sides equally.

One of the last magazines had a full piece with Alberto Gonzalez. I mean, there was a few hidden hits, but for the most part, seemed to show both sides. Heck, he even wrote in when they made a mistake and published his letter.

I usually read things that talk about "Texas", the state, in general. Better than the local newspapers of the state.

TX Monthly is a fantastic magazine with well written articles. Not everything in the magazine is written at a 3rd grade reading level so I can understand why some people have a hard time.

You should get the issue with the top 40 cafes around the state. I have mine in my truck. We hit as many as we can when we are out and about.

My wife and I do the same thing. We love Lucy's On the Square in Celina.
