It all depends on what they want to do over a four day weekend. If they like to drive and look at the scenery, then some of the western destinations would be best. If they like dining, theater, museums, history, etc., then a New York, Boston, San Francisco or Montreal vacation might work better.

Having just moved to the Knoxville area after living in Texas for 32 years I highly recommend the Smoky Mountains.

I also 2nd (or 3rd) Boston.

Regarding New York City...also a great choice, but be wary of the first weekend in November as the NY Marathon is on Sunday, November 1. It's the single largest generator of tourist revenue in the city and hotel rooms will be scarce.
