You think a ring has value? I guarantee you I could have sold those Sea Doos for more than a ring that cost the same price at a later time.

I just bought a pretty nice solitaire for much less than $15K...and she seems very happy with it.

...and guys, if you don't think that ring loses monetary value, you are sorely mistaken. If we were to try and sell it, we might get half what I paid....not a big market for "used engagement rings"....

edit: spelling

I could pick out a hella nice ring for 15K. From Tiffany's even...

This is what confuses me about you, Alicia, unless you are just joking. You talk about the plight of the poor yet you would want that showy of a ring?

Would it be wrong to buy a used engagement ring? And if so, do you think she could ever find out somehow? I'm not actually in the market for a ring yet, but I assume I will be someday.

And I wonder who came up with that saying.....

I love America. We bash women for getting fake tits, but consider it perfectly normal to spend thousands of dollars to wear a chunk of carbon on our finger in order to impress others.

The smart thing to do is lease your engagement ring. There is a 50% chance your marriage will fail anyway so you only pay for the time you use the ring.

If for some reason your marriage actually lasts, you can turn in your leased ring and upgrade to a nicer one.

Do you think I could somehow spin it as "Its not a used ring, it is a high quality antique that you just can't find anymore"

In about 1993 a buddy of mine knocked up a bad rig from Arkansas. He was a college student and went to Zales, got a Zales credit card, and bought her a $12k engagement ring. She accepted his proposal and ring and asked for $300 to buy some things from the store. She took the cash, had an abortion, and kept the ring.

The moral is, don't screw chicks from Arkansas.

Having been through this process, I can't help but throw in my two cents...

If you spend $15K on a ring now, you can't really step down from there for future jewelry purchases.

Plus, women seem to lose things too easily at times!!!

NEWSFLASH:

Engagement rings are a worthless American custom.

Save the money and make a downpayment on a house...

Obviously you cant begin saving more than two months before you buy it. Putting money into saving every month, and then dipping into that would just be completely out of the question.

In 1992 I bought my wife one from Wally World for 40 dolla. I told her if it was too cheap for her she wasn't worth marrying anyway.

It is very clear that most people that have posted 1)have never shopped for an engagement ring or have any idea how much they cost 2)don't make very much money 3)would, for some reason, rather spend the money on something that will immediately lose it's value (cars, seadoos, etc.)

1) I've bought two. The first time I was still in school, and we bought a cheap one. Unfortunately, the marriage didn't last.

On my SECOND opportunity, I bought one the smart way. A diamond's value is dependent on its 4 C's, not the store you buy it at.

I went to http://www.pricescope.com/
and found a diamond that met my criteria. 1 Carat, Color H or better, Clarity SI1 or better, and an EXCELLENT Cut (the most important C). [EXCELLENT means HCA of 2 or lower, or an AGS rating of 0 or 1.]

I wound up buying my diamond at White Flash for somewhere a little over $4000. They have a simliar one right now going for $6298, including pricescope discount (prices have gone up significantly since I bought).

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-608073.htm

We went to one of the nicer (non-mall) jewelry stores here in San Antonio and picked out a platinum setting and matching wedding band with baguette and round side accent diamonds for somewhere around $1000.

She gets compliments all the time, often from strangers. All for less than $6000. 1 Carat is PLENTY big for her hand (she's 5'5" and 110#).

2) The "two months salary" rule is just stupid. It was created by the diamond marketers, and repeated as often as possible, to create an expectation on the part of the woman, and a feeling of obligation on the part of the man.

3) I have friends who have had engagements broken, and they've taken 30% or bigger hits on the resale of the ring. Especially if they bought retail.

I'd GUESS the idiot's girlfriend is either a high maintenance biotch or a weak-minded and vain "me too" girl. But that's just a guess.

I was happy to buy my wife's ring... ESPECIALLY after she told me "I don't need a diamond ring". Look for that kind of woman, guys!

haha. I get it now. You didnt really think that everyone who buys an engagement ring doesnt buy anything else for three months. You were making a joke out of it by pretending to not be able to process thoughts logically. Thats so funny. I feel so dumb for not getting that. I'm laughing now. Really I am.

I was being sarcastic!!! I honestly could care less about how much is spent on a ring. My boyfriend knows how much I want a new car.

my wife became allergic to gold and couldnt wear her ring anymore after we got married. We went to Wal-Mart and bought a fake platinum ring. She has gotten tons more compliments about that $25 ring than she ever got on her real one.

The moral. 90% of people can't tell the difference between real and fake on the first glance. Save the money

I got my wife's diamond from Alaska (where DeBeers doesn't own all of the diamonds) and got her a much nicer diamond than what I would have been able to get at a jewelry store.
Muffy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Curly, one of my best friends did that. She wanted a HUGE diamond, they couldn't afford it. They bought a very good mounting and had a good CZ put in there. Unless you are a trained jeweler, I don't think anyone can tell the difference. They spent a couple hundred vs $20,000. I thought it made a lot of sense.

Having said that - I have a beautiful ring that my husband had made for me and it does have large real stones in it. I have to admit, I was surprised at how gorgeous it is. I had nice rings to start with and he surprised me with this for our 5th anniversary (guess by then he figured it was going to last! ha ha)
