Our track and field team is back home in College Station this weekend for an awesome two day meet, the "Charlie Thomas Invitational" The two day meet means more track and field with at least 13 schools on the schedule and a few pro athletes as well.
The two days will also cover the indoor pentathlon for women, and heptathlon for men, compared to the more commonly known heptathlon and decathlon outdoors. The indoor pentathlon consists of the 60 hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800. For the women we'll see Sofia Iakushina, Madison Murray, and Rylee Lydon representing Texas A&M. As well as, Mercy Freeman unattached, and reigning NCAA Heptathlon Champion Timara Chapman competing as well! For the men, the events are 60, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60 hurdles, pole vault, and the 1000. Representing Texas A&M will be Blake Harris who's off to a great indoor season and will be competing against some great pros! Also in attendance but competing in individual events is Lindon Victor.
Set to make their 800 debut is reigning NCAA silver 800 medalist and Bowerman watchlist member Sam Whitmarsh. If it kind of feels like we haven't seen our team at full strength, it's cause we haven't. This team is at its best when Sam Whitmarsh is one of the top 800 runners in the nation and he makes his season debut in the event tomorrow. Competing with him in that event is Kimar Farquharson, Caden Norris, and in the next heat Gilbert Rono and Grant Ashby! Let's get loud and bring them on home to a fast time so we can reclaim our 800 Meter U title!
We'll also have our national even leaders Aleksandr Solovev and Jaiya Covington in the pole vault and 60 hurdlers. Winny Bii who is second nationally in the triple jump will be competing as well! Our vaults and jumps will be a fun event to watch, our men's long jump will have Mason Mangum, John Baker, and Khybah Dawson entered and all are top 20 in the nation. Obviously including Solovev, the men's pole vault will be a great competition with some high flyers! That'll be 4 o clock on Friday.
A big story is who won't be racing this weekend. After a very successful meet last weekend in Boston and New Mexico, lots of Aggies will be resting this weekend or only doing the relay. Our men's 400 group won't be racing in open events, aside from Cutler Zamzow in the 200, which maybe means an all out 4x400 to reclaim the national lead will be in effect. Cooper Cawthra who ran a 3:54 mile last week will be on spectating duties, as is Debora Cherono, Megan Roberts, and Gavin Champ.
The men's mile will still feature a strong lineup, as does the women's 3000. We'll have a loaded field in the 60 for the men and women. Also competing is a group of Aggie pros, including some Aggie National Champions, Jevon O'Bryant, Tierra Robinson-Jones, Timara Chapman, and Olympic Bronze Medalist, former NCAA record holder, Lindon Victor, who better get a standing round of applause!
The meet being evenly spaced out across 2 days gives us fans a great opportunity to attend either day as both will be filled with nonstop action! The live results link atop has the start time for each event! So if you wanna catch some races or field events before softball tomorrow, it'll be nice! Or in between softball games Saturday, there will be track going on all around. The opportunity to see world class athletes is worth the price of admission! BTHO OUR OLD PR'S
