Yep. I think it is one reason why some programs are punching above their belts. Most of the time, it's fine overall but SMU took major advantage of it.
Cos and Waak were way off today with timing and location plus our serve receive was pretty off today making it hard for the middles to get involved. In my opinion at least

I think there were jitters for a group of ladies who played in their first tourney game as favorites. We can only imagine the pressure these ladies felt to take care of business! Nerves are out! Tomorrow we'll be the underdogs, no one will give us a chance, we'll play free and rip the leather off the ball tomorrow!!!!
I mean, that was more Wakk than the middles. Waak consistently trapped the middles. Who would you rather set? Humphries or Cos/Perkins? Waak has these matches where she constantly avoids the middles, and these are the matches we're screwed. She's usually good at finding them. She will need them tomorrow if we stand a chance to pull the upset

Well well well, folks, yesterday was a pretty good night for dancing! But hope you slept well, and you have your dancing shoes shined once more, because another round of this dance continues and our FIGHTIN' TEXAS AGGIE VOLLEYBALL TEAM IS STILL DANCING! ROUND OF 32! Tonight! A birth to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. Us and those losers from Tempe! Texas A&M - Arizona State, 7pm, tonight, do or die!
Tonight our ladies will be looking to pull off the upset against host and 3 seed Arizona State at their house, on a Saturday night, in front of a sea of yellow and their ugly shade of maroon that's not maroon like us! Yesterday our ladies beat a scrappy and confident Colorado State team in 4 sets and ASU beat New Hampshire easily in 3 sets. They have a 30-2 record which is crazy, although the big 12 doesn't seem to be a strong conference this year. They only played 8 tournament teams all year and went 6-2 against them. BYU got upset by a 12 seed, TCU was in contention to hose and got beat badly by Oregon in the second round, Baylor and Utah were given a hosting spot and both lost in the second round. So I think tonight we make that another overrated big 12 team losing at home in the second round!
However, without the maroon tinted glasses, there's a reason they're hosting, there's a reason they've lost only 2 games, and there's a reason they're on an 18 match winning streak! They are an experienced veteran team and they can do everything well! They have the Big 12 setter and Libero of the year! Their OH was first team all big 12 and the middles were first and second team all conference. And they haven't lost at home all year long.
Their setter #12 Argentina Ung is amazing and she loves setting her middles! One of those middles played for us back in 2020-2021, #23 Claire Jeter. She left A&M after a year and has spent 4 years in Tempe making herself one of the top middle blockers in the country! As a middle she averages 2.42 kills a set at a .430 clip and her other middle blocker #15 Savannah Kjolhede is a monster blocking as they both have over a 100 blocks on the year. On the pins they have #8 Geli Cyr who receives the majority of sets as well as #4 Shania Cromartie. They have the big 12 Libero of the year Mary Shroll who averages a staggering 4.72 digs per set! And also in the back row is Brynn Covell, who was a Bird Kuhn recruit who spent the spring with the Aggies in 2023 in Jamie's first offseason before transferring out in the summer.
But enough about them. Yeah they're the favorites, yeah they have all these accolades, yeah yeah yeah… tonight all of those stats and awards and records are out the window. Tonight when that first ball is served, nothing matters aside from who gets to 25 first 3 times. That's the beauty of sports, nothing else matters when two teams are going at it with everything on the line. You try telling Logan Lednicky or Ifenna Cos-Okpalla, or Jamie Morrison that we don't have a chance.
Last night we did not play anywhere close to our best volleyball. Which is why I think if we turn things around today, we can be successful! Last night we struggled to get our middles going consistently and we looked out of sorts on offense. For some of these girls it was their first tournament match, and for all of them it was the first one as a favorite. All the pressure was on them to finally breakthrough and get a win, they did it! Even if it was ugly, they got the win and got another match! The pressure is off, if we play free, play fearless, and play smart efficient Aggie volleyball. We cannot only compete with them, but we can beat them. They've been in 1 5 set match all year. We need to push them and make them uncomfortable. Their pins are 6'0, 5'10, and 5'9. If we get them out of system we can affect their play! Let's hope we can get some good serves off!

Also a huge shout out goes to Tatum Thomas! She hasn't had her number called and her playing time has decreased, but yesterday she came in during a pivotal moment when we were down 2219 in the 3rd set and fired off 2 aces! She grew up and went to high school a few minutes away from Tempe and she was called on and she delivered!
Same goes with Margot Manning. She played a lot last year in our 2 setter system, but this year Maddie Waak has been our setter, but Manning came in today and served her butt off! She single handily brought us back to life multiple times and even extended our lead a few times as well!

Thank you Aggie Volleyball. I wasn't there in Tempe, but I was hanging out with a CSU faculty member last night. There will be two Arizona State grads at the event I am attending this evening after this second round match. Let's keep this going.

I am going to try to watch tonight. Last night I turned on the match in the 2nd set.....when things went south, so did I. Watched 2nd AND 3rd set of Miz/SMU.....feeling like a jinx i went back to our match in the 3rd, catching the come from behind in the Jones/Lednicky heavyweight fight. Thank goodness they won. (that was one heck of a reversal on 24th point- SMU not as lucky) I tell my lines people "any part of the ball/line is in......"

Completely agree with this! 7 clutch aces won us that third set.
Will also say, it's extremely impressive that our bench is always ready to go and contribute. When their names are called, we are ready to go. Morrison(and staff) do an amazing job of having our girls know their roles and be ok with it. They are truly building something here

I feel the criticism most of the times is a spur of the moment, hyperbolic reaction to a singular moment or a handful of plays in an entire game… but I feel like everyone here on forum like such is here because they absolutely care about this program and want nothing but success for our ladies!
We may bicker and/or complain too much, but we are the true fans of Aggie Volleyball! I started this thread and have tried to add as much as I can because I too want to see Aggieland become a volleyball community and believe it could! Even if I was talking to like 2 people on here during a regular season game then it was worth it!! I was a student in Corbelli's last year and with Bird Kuhn, the stands were usually empty and the students didn't care! It's starting to change and that makes me happy! Morrison cares and win or lose tonight, he's building much more than a winning volleyball team here! That's why I'm adamant about cheering and promoting this program! 5 years ago I didn't even know what an opposite hitter was, now volleyball is becoming one of my favorite sports!!! let's keep building Aggieland into a volleyball school!

I live about 2 hours north of Tempe. Never have been able to attend a live game but have followed the team since Jamie has been here the last 2 years.
I was thrilled to be able to attend in person last night along with my wife. CO State had more fans than we did. I was yelling my heart out to encourage our ladies.
After the game I got to stand in line high giving the girls on their way out and then meet coach Lindsey and thrilled to speak with Jamie for a few minutes!
