Name: MADDIE JONES
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: College Station, Texas
High School: College Station High School
Major:

One more hometown College Station product! This time is Maddie Jones who joined the program last year after an exemplary high school career!! Her and state were a common occurrence in high school! In cross country she competed at the state meet all 4 years with her best finish at 33rd her senior year! And in track she made it every single year aside from the covid year! She has made it to state in the 800, 1600, and 3200 placing 2nd her senior year in the mile running a PR time of 4:56 after placing 4th and missing the podium her junior year in the 1600 and 3200! She's always been better on the track and only ran indoors this past season running a PR of 2:11 in the 800 and a 5:03 indoor mile! She also ran on our distance medley relay at conference! I believe she will specialize in the 800/1500/mile races and I'm excited what next year will hold!

Class: Redshirt Sophomore
Hometown: Frisco
High School: Reedy High School
Major: Biomedical Sciences

Next up on the guys side we have a very talented sophomore in Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles! Aiden bursted onto the scene as a freshman this past season at the Arturo Barrios Invite when he ran a 24:07 placing him 42nd out of 375+ runners! In high school cross country he made it to state 3 years placing 121st, then 24th, then 14th! In 2021 he made it to state in the 3200 competing against fellow Ags Diego Heredia and Carter Gordy! He's only been on campus for two years and he has improved so much in track and I'm cross country! He has became an integral part of our cross country team! He's improved his track 5k by nearly 30 seconds! He is part of a very strong young core we have here at Texas A&M and I expect him to become one our main guys on the cross country course this fall!!

High School: Marcus High School
Major: Communication

Austin Owen is a redshirt sophomore who comes from a very strong distance program in Flower Mound Marcus! She competed at the state cross country meet every single year in high school with her best finish being 39th her sophomore year! She came here in 2022 with a strong class and redshirted her first year before injuries impacted her redshirt freshman year, although she did run a few races indoors and even competed on the distance medley relay at conference! Hopefully she's healed for this season because she can be a solid miler! Her brother is a freshman pole vaulter for Kansas State!

Carson Parker is another redshirt sophomore who came in the 2022 class! She comes from a very solid distance program in Kingwood High School and she competed at the state cross country meet 3 years placing 23rd, 19th, and 15th which is outstanding!! She was very consistent cross country runner in high school and every year had her best run at state, which as a coach you love to see!! She made it to state in track as well as a senior in the mile! She did redshirt all 3 her freshman year so expect to see a lot more of her this season!! I believe she can run a lot faster than her current best!! it's also cool seeing her in industrial distribution!!!

Name: AVERY PERKINS
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Hallsville, Texas
High School: Hallsville High School
Major: English

Our next runner comes from a small East Texas town of Hallsville, home of a handful of NFL stars and our very own star Avery Perkins! A short drive to Louisiana, Perkins opted to come to A&M last year and she has quickly made her mark, especially on the track! In high school she was a state qualifier in cross country placing 13th her senior year, but she also made it to state in track and field 2 years earning a silver medal in the 800 her senior year after placing 5th as a junior! She also placed 5th in the 1600 as a senior! I'm always intrigued by elite 800 runners who also do well in cross country! But with her mid distance speed, adjusting to the 6k will be a little trickier and she only raced once last year but in conference so that speaks to her talent level! However, she really made her name known on the track winning the Charlie Thomas Invite mile in a time of 4:50!!! She then ran on the DMR at conference indoors before running a crazy 2:10 outdoors in the 800 and followed it with a 4:28 1500 at the Penn Relays! Those times are incredible for a freshman, she outdid herself this past season and I'm excited to see what she does as a sophomore! She is also a funny poster on social media @aggieaveryspam

Our last ladies sophomore preview goes to Sydney Waterbury out of Round Rock, Texas! (A beautiful town that I love to visit lol) Sydney is a redshirt sophomore who also came to A&M in the 2022 class!! She was a state qualifier in cross country in 2022 helping her team advance as well! She redshirted her freshman year in all 3 areas, and didn't compete last year in cross country but she did run several track meets both indoors and outdoors! Hopefully she gets to race more this year!

On the guys side we have Noah Willows, a true sophomore out of the young but very talented and successful Bridgeland High School! In high school he made it to state multiple years in cross country placing as high as 20th his senior year! His track times were good, but he surpassed those times and ran extremely well this past season! Noah came in as a freshman this past season and ran many races in cross country and a few track meets! He ran a very impressive 8:35 and 14:52 indoors!! So it's evident he's just scratching his potential, so I'm excited to see what he's going to do! His 8k was solid but I expect him to get close to 24:00! He's very involved with religious groups and is in a very tough major so kudos to him!

Another very talented sophomore who had a really really strong freshman campaign is Zack Munger who escaped the horror of Austin, Texas and moved to a beautiful city after high school! Munger comes from a solid but not historically strong distance program in Bowie High School in Austin! However individually he he did qualify to state in cross country 2 years and in track as a senior! He placed 30th and 20th at the 6A level! He also made it to state in track in the 3200 where he then PR'd by 11 seconds to place 6th with a 9:01! Zack had a solid first season in cross country, but he ran extremely well indoors in track! Right out of the gate he ran a 8:19 3000 and followed it up with a huge 14:36 5000! Those are impressive indoor marks and just a preview of what he's going to do as an Aggie!

Name: HUNTER JACKSON

Another member of this strong sophomore class is Hunter Jackson! From Wylie High School, Hunter was known for his long blond hair and even him of all people, who could get NIL deals for his luscious flowing hair, shaved it off along with every other freshman cross country runner! But rest assured, it's growing back! In high school he was a 3 time state qualifier in cross country placing as high a 27th as a junior!!! In track he just missed out on state in a tough region placing 4th in the 1600/3200. He ran well in cross country and a solid 3000 indoors! But we learned that his specialty is going to be the steeple! I love the steeple so I'm excited to see how he progresses in this event! I bet he gets closer to 9 minutes this next season especially another year of xc training and training with Victor Kibiego and Jonathan Chung!! He is a physics major so he should have the best technique over the hurdles!!!

Name: JACK JOHNSTON
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Prosper, Texas
High School: Prosper High School
Major: Business Administration

Our last sophomore preview is none other than Jack Johnston! Jack comes from Prosper like Shewaye Johnson! Jack was a two time state qualifier in cross country as he competed in an extremely tough region! As a junior he placed 23rd at state, but placed 4th a senior in the 6A level!! Unfortunately he had to cut his senior track season short, but I'm certain he would have made it to state there! He'd heal up and explode onto the scene in cross country as an Aggie! He destroyed his old 5k pr in his first meet and ran a 14:51 then ran a huge PR in his first 8k placing 8th at the Texas A&M Invitational!!! He's then place 43rd at conference finishing as our 5th runner, but his best race would be his 10k at regionals! He finished 31st with such a strong time and was one of the fastest freshman in that race and was our 3rd fastest runner! He's then keep that momentum running extremely well both indoors and outdoors! He ran such a great 5000 and 10000! The future is so bright for Jack Johnston and I believe his name is going to be on the A&M record board before he finishes his time here!! I'm excited and you should be too! He is the future!

Thanks for the welcome! I see your name a lot and it is obvious you are really passionate about Aggie sports! I was lurking for a year or so before I joined late last Spring. TexAgs is the first site I have 'joined' in a very long time. There are a lot of excellent comments throughout the year so wanted to join in. In my youth, a long time ago, I played football, baseball and ran track (sprinter then but now prefer longer distances). My primary sports as an adult and Aggie grad are softball and soccer but I like all of the 'minor' sports and read the threads on them, listening to games and matches on the radio and following on the StatBroadcast site. I like to comment or add links when appropriate but my expertise is a lot less than others (except for softball) so I often hold back! Today is volleyball and soccer - whoop! Gig 'Em!

Post often and anytime you want, it's appreciated and these "smaller" sports deserve more love and attention! I'm class of 21, so definitely not an expert at anything, but just a fan and I hope to engage the community and other fans to help support the team!!! I love nearly every sport, but track and field is by far my favorite!

The first junior on our list is The Woodlands own, Brooke Forbes! Is the woodlands or The Woodlands, I'm curious lol! Brooke Forbes came to Aggieland in 2022 after 4 years running for the powerhouse distance program of The Woodlands! She was teammates with freshman Penelope Gracey and they both made it to state together in 2021! But Forbes best state meet was her junior year where she placed 39th! Brooke has competed both years in cross country, but hasn't officially competed in track! Both years she even competed in conference! Finishing as our 8th and 9th runner which is impressive! Her 6k time is great in comparison to her 5k time! So with more experience her times should continue to drop and hopefully we see her more and more!

Next up is Elise Smoot, who also escaped the horror of growing up in Austin and finding her way to beautiful College Station! But on this journey she originally first signed and ran for Wake Forest!! She also was a high school grad in 2020 so her senior year was cut short due to covid! So this is her 5th year in college but she does have a redshirt year and a free covid year! She was a 2 time state qualifier in cross country and placed 29th her senior year!! She was an excellent 800 runner but also ran a really great steeple in high school, but hasn't ran a steeple in college! She moved here 2 years ago and didn't compete until this past track season! She ran well at wake forest and even ran a solid 17:47 in the 5k and a 23:05 in a 6k and a 2:13 800! She hasn't ran an 800 with us but it's something i hope we get to see this year!!

Name: EMMA LITTLE
Class: Junior
Hometown: Montgomery, Texas
High School: Lake Creek High School
Major: Marketing

Next up we have one of our most integral runners to last years national championship qualifying team! Without Emma Little, we are not national qualifiers! For most of the cross country season, we had a strong top 4 runners in: Maddie Livingston, Madison Brown, Kennady Fontenot, an Shewaye Johnson, then our scoring would drop off! But after a late season rise, Little improved at the Arturo's Barrios Invitational then boom she ran a great race at conference! She ran right behind Shewaye and it was then and there when I knew we would make nationals! Little stepped up to the plate and delivered and I had my full confidence she'd do so at regionals! She would go on to place 32nd and boom we qualified for nationals! Our next best runner was 58th! So if you followed along that day, you saw how excited I was for her!!! She did also have a strong track season placing 11th in the steeple at conference in her second steeple race ever!

In high school she was a 3 time state qualifier in cross country, winning regionals as a senior and placing 17th in 5A at state!! I also got to see her compete at state twice in high school, one year against Maddie Livingston and another against Maddie Jones! I think she will have an even better year in cross country and should drop her 6k time below 21! She was our 5th runner last year and at nationals even best Shewaye! So losing Brown and adding Cherono and our freshman, I still expect an experienced Little to be a part of our 7! Keep an eye out for her because she's going to have a great year!!!

Name: KENNADY FONTENOT

Hometown: New Braunfels, Texas
High School: New Braunfels High School
Major: Political Science

Last but not least of the juniors on the ladies side is New Braunfels own Kennady Fontenot! Now if you pay attention to her times, you'll notice how she just exploded onto the scene her sophomore year and took all of us Aggie fans by storm! I know I just mentioned how Emma Little was an integral part of our national qualifying team, but Kennady Fontenot was just as important! She ran great as a freshman, but she worked so hard and her sophomore year she became elite and one of our top girls and leaders! She improved her 6k time by over a minute which is absolutely insane! She placed 29th at conference, but her best performance was 14th place at regionals to help lead our team to nationals! She was 40th as a freshman! She had a total of 7 PR's last school year! After a stellar cross country season, she stepped on the track and the elite performances just continued! She then tried the steeplechase for the first time at a home meet and defeated the field by over 35 seconds! Then a few weeks later she ran a crazy 16:19 in the 5000! Then I'm her second steeple just decided to break the school record lol! She placed 6th in the steeple at conference and qualified to the national prelims! Unfortunately she clipped one of the barriers and suffered a nasty fall and I wanted to tear up too because in my heart I knew she was absolutely going to PR and qualify for nationals that race! But I'm certain she'll make nationals next year!!

In high school she was a 3 time state qualifier in cross country and a 3 time regional medalist including a regional championship her senior year where she then went onto placing 8th at state!! She did also make state as a junior in the 3200! But what she's been able to accomplish and the times she's ran in just two years of college are absolutely incredible! It's a testament to her work ethic and character! She's one of my favorite runners on the team and you all should jump on the Kennady Fontenot bandwagon!! She's going to have such a great year and I can't wait to see what she does in cross country and in the steeple! I expect her to lead this team back to nationals, so stay tuned! (Also more points because I was a poli sci major also, and more points cause her high schools mascot was a unicorn!!!!)

Name: VICTOR KIBIEGO
Class: Redshirt Junior
Hometown: Eldoret, Kenya
High School: Kanga
Major: Psychology

Our only junior on the roster is none other than Victor Kibiego! And just wow, wow! It's been a very very very long time since we've had a runner like Victor Kibiego on our squad, if ever! His cross country performances are just simply incredible! The former UTEP runner only has had two cross country season and both were phenomenal! His freshman season he qualified to nationals with 6 top 5 finishes including a 2nd at the Conference USA meet and then proceeded to get 20th at regionals in the Mountain West Region, which is also home to probably the toughest region with schools like BYU, NAU, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Montana State! He then proceeded to place 102nd at his first national meet! Then he'd up his game and go on a huge run his 2nd cross country season winning 3 meets, including the Arturo Barrios Invitational here in College Station where he beat the field by more than 10 seconds! Additionally, he won his conference meet 8k by 14 seconds with a 22:28, which is an insane time! He's then place 9th at the Mountain Regionals taking down Paris Olympians Kenneth Rooks and James Corrigan!!!! He'd then go on to place an astounding 44th at nationals!

His track career is just as impressive! He moved here in January so he got to run for us! He ran solid indoors, but his primary race is the steeple and his first steeple race as an Aggie we made a statement running 8:25 just 2 seconds off Henry Lelei's school record! Unfortunately he did suffer a minor injury but he'd still race at conference and win, then get through comfortably at the national prelims! In hindsight maybe it would have been best if he sat out conference but we were in the running for a title so he decided to try to help the team and get 10 points! The injury was still lingering and most likely affected him at nationals! After a congested race where he stepped onto the infield, he decided to not risk anything and pulled out of the race! The year prior at UTEP, he was the NCAA bronze medalist in the steeple! Only behind Olympic silver medalist Kenneth Rooks and world championship qualifier, Duncan Hamilton! So the steeple is his primary race and I bet he comes back this year and avenges 2024!

I'm so excited to see what Kibiego can do in the maroon and white in cross country! His times are excellent! The region we are in will definitely be a lot easier, he will have to contend with the Arkansas guys but with the race at home, we'll bring him down the homestretch! Having him is a huge boost to our roster! I wish he got to run a season with Erick Casarez because them two together would have been a great 1-2 combo! But behind him is where we need to close the gap, we have Jonathan Chung, Cooper Cawthra, and some excellent underclassmen, but they'll have to step up! I really hope we run well to not squander these two years with Kibiego! I'm so glad he's on our team and I hope he stays healthy!!!

Major: Agr., Leadership, Education, and Communication

COOOOOOOOOOOOOP! Next we have our senior men and we'll kick things off with Mr Sub 4 and the school mile record holder himself, Mr. Cooper Cawthra! As an Aggie he has raced 85 times in the maroon and white! Talk about experience! While most of his accomplishments have been on the track, he has also elevated his game in cross country, especially last year! Based on his Pr's his best events are the 1500/1600! So asking him to extend out to an 8000 or 10000 meter race is a very extended range! But last season Cawthra ran extremely well for us in cross country and was consistently in our top 3! Albeit a smaller meet and without Eric Casarez, Cawthra ran a 24:04 to win the Texas A&M Invitational! His only other top ten performance prior to that was in a meet with 3 schools! However he's back up his win with an excellent performance at the Arturo Barrios Invite where he'd place 26th in a loaded field and then ran an even better race at conference placing 24th as our second best runner!! So it's safe to say he is becoming a lot more comfortable! His best prior to last season was a 24:33, so within a year he improved by nearly 40 seconds! His progress has been both evident on the cross country course and on the track!

Many of you should know by now what exactly he has accomplished on the track! He is the school record holder in the mile with a 3:59 sub 4 performance! Watching that race and how he threw his arms in the air and punched his fist outwards in excitement, you could tell how hard he worked for that performance and how much he wanted it! He's then continue that success placing 4th in the mile at conference! Outdoors he'd run a very impressive 1:49 PR in the 800 before a 3:42 to qualify for the national prelims, then a 3:43 at conference to place 4th! He'd then run his best 1500 at the national prelims first round!! I want to see him go sun 3:40 next year and break the school record! But he'll have competition but with that a strong training group in Sam Whitmarsh, Luca Santorum, and Gilbert Rono! He's also a school record holder in the DMR and the 4x800! He did attend a private high school but he did win state in the TCAF all 4 years in cross country and collected 6 more golds in high school!

Cawthra is important for our team's success in cross country! He ran extremely well at conference and was a big reason we had one of our best ever finishes as a team at conference!!! I expect him to improve even more and have an excellent season! He didn't have his best race at regionals last year as that's where the race extends to 10k, but I bet he runs better this year!

Chung is the leader of our group and like Kibiego, he is also an individual national qualifier in cross country! In the 2022 season Chung ran the race of a lifetime at regionals to place 6th taking down many elite runners to punch his ticket to nationals! He ran a 30:35 10k which was nearly 2 and half minutes faster than his 10k the year before! His best times were off compared to the rest of the top talent in that group, but watching him run that race he had a determined look in his face and you can feel it in the air that something special was happening! At first I was a little worried, but he just started picking people a part one by one and as everyone began to fade he just kept getting stronger and stronger!! Last season, he started off the year strong as well! He was 5th at the Texas A&M Invitational then 11th in a strong field in Boston! He placed 33rd at conference helping our guys finish 4th! Then he was just so close missing nationals again by just 4 spots!

He then would go on to have 4 PR's during the track season in the 1500, 3000, 5000, and 10000, with in my opinion the 10k being his best performance at 29:17! This left him just out of the national prelims in that event! His primary event is the steeple but he only contested twice last year where one was an 8th place finish at conference scoring for the Aggies! I'm really hoping we get to see him steeple some more this coming season because I believe he too can make the national prelims, in either that or the 10k! In high school, he was a 2 time state qualifier in cross country and had his track season cut short due to covid!

Like I mentioned with Cawthra, we will need both of our seniors to bridge the gap between Kibiego and every one else! We will get a huge scoring advantage with Kibiego leading the way, but we will need places 2-5 to run well too! This will give us a strong race in conference now that Tennessee has lost a lot of people! We ca potentially get 3rd if all falls right! Regionals wise, Arkansas is absolutely stacked but texas did lose some top runners and didn't reload like Arkansas did! So keep an eye out for Chung and his trademark headband and fearless running style to help carry the Aggies this season!

Name: NICOLE CHASTAIN
Class: Senior
Hometown: Roswell, Georgia
High School: Blessed Trinity Catholic
Major: Kinesiology

Our first senior preview on the ladies side is Nicole Chastain! A 5th year senior Nicole is coming to us all the way from the beautiful state of Georgia! She's a 2021 graduate of Blessed Trinity Catholic which to me sounds like a cool name for a school! She competed at the GHSA State Championships for 3 years with her best finish being 12th her senior year! Nicole did have her strongest races last year during cross country where she PR'd at the second championships placing 99th and running a solid 22:20 to be our 7th runner! She was then an alternate at regionals being switched out with Amanda Hogan for the 7th spot! With how unpredictable cross country races can be, spots 6 and 7 are just as crucial and Chastain played an integral part on our team advancing to nationals last year! That experience is important and hopefully helps her out this year! But to run a 22:20 6k and barely being able to get under 19 in the 5k in high school is a testament to her work ethic! There will be a lot more competition for the 7 spots this year so I'm excited to see how Chastain looks!

Name: MADDIE LIVINGSTON
Class: Senior
Hometown: Dripping Springs, Texas
High School: Dripping Springs High School
Major: TBA

Last but certainly not least, is the one and only Maddie Livingston! She is our most accomplished runner and our leader! The Dripping Springs product has done so well for us the past 3 years and she was the catalyst for us all of last season as she led our team to nationals! Throughout the majority of the season (aside for one race) she was our undisputed number 1! Wherever Livingston went we went! And she carried us to one of our absolute best seasons ever! She joined us in 2021 and was a part of some quality teams who came just short of national berth! Her first two years at regionals she finished 57th and 33rd before finishing 11th this past year!!! Her progress has been beautiful to witness and last cross country season she just blossomed into an elite runner! She was top 25 in every single race until nationals, winning the Texas A&am Invite and placing 2nd at TCU! She was also our highest finisher at nationals placing 129th!

If you go back to the track season of 2023 she PR'd in every race from 1500-10000 and her progression was clear and I even pointed out how I expected her to have an amazing cross country season because her track time were just so jaw dropping and she was surpassing the seniors on our roster! She had placed 5 in the conference meet in the 10k and ran an impressive 5k at Mt Sac! Her big time races were coming and right from the gun it was evident that she was our number 1!! She unfortunately didn't get to race in track this past season but I hope she's healthy and at her full potential!

Her work ethic was also in display at dripping spring, where she just continually improved each and every year! She competed at the state meet all 4 years and was out of the top 100 her first two years before blossoming and placing 35th as a junior and 14th a senior! Her junior track season got cut short but I got to see her run at regionals and state as a senior when she medaled at state in the 3200 with an impressive 10:45!

Maddie Livingston will go down as one of the best cross country runners in A&M history for what she accomplished last year and for leading our team to nationals! This year we added some excellent freshman and I believe San Jaunita Leal can keep pace with Livingston so I'm excited to see them push each other! Kennady Fontenot had an amazing spring so I'm sure she's elevated her game to that level or may even run faster! If Cherono runs there will be a battle for number 1, but as of now this is still Livingston's team! She's our leader and she's the reason we were a national championship qualifying team last year!! I'm so excited to see her lead us again, God willing she's healthy after not running during track, she can possibly be even stronger! Maddie Livingston you are amazing!!

An excellent job - thank you again for all the time and effort you put into it !!!

Journalism? You write well. Very well. Better than many of the staff at the Batt. I know, I know, most are young but someone should at least read and have corrected every article before being uploaded. Hey, reminds me, does the Batt still come out on paper any longer or is it all online?
