I don't think any other active player can beat Novak on this surface, though I'd love to be proven wrong. That being said, it'll be interesting to see how well each of the young triumvirate (Carlitos, Sinner, Rune) fares, not to mention older (fading) favorites like Andy and Thiem.

I am too. Ever since first seeing him play in 2019, something clicked and I was hooked. He has tons to work on to keep pace with Alcaraz (and Rune tbh), but he's both determined and adaptable, which guys like Shapo, Stef, and probably FAA have always lacked (mostly just the adaptability part).

Definitely. A late bloomer with tons of upside and potential. Big game. Just has to believe he can win and he will.

Would have loved to see Thiem beat Tsitsipas, but still a great match.

Still hard to believe that Shelton is in the top 32. He rose QUICK

Insane to see that.

Yes. Thiem v Tsitsipas was so good! What a crazy matchup so early in the tournament.

Yeah it's great to see Thiem begin to find his legs again. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for how he pushed Rafa, Novak, and Roger (albeit an older Roger) from '18-20. I don't think he can ever find that sustained form again, but we've seen glimpses of it lately.

Hard to watch Sloane Stephens choke that one away. So much talent; to me she has underachieved, unfortunately. Glad she won the US Open when she did, but I just feel she could have won 2-3 more slams.

I want to see Novak win two or three more majors, especially the US and Aussie, just to send a big double bird to the powers that be that kept him out of those tournaments. Once he's at 25 majors, that should bury any debate regarding GOAT status.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I'd like to see that happen bc of those reasons as well (and only for those reasons), because I'm a Nadal fan and I want him to be the GOAT. LOL

He already ended that debate after beating Roger at Wimbledon four years ago, unfortunately. I think he'll win here and then lose in NY, mirroring his 3/4 run two years ago, since those courts (and the weather) have made it the most egalitarian slam since Delpo beat Roger in '09.

You got that right about the US Open. Since Fed won his first major in 03 at Wimbledon, each of the majors have had 20 tournaments except Wimbledon with 19. In that time period, the big 3 have won all but 2 of the Australian (Safin and Warwinka), 2 of the French (Gaudio and Warwinka), and 2 at Wimbledon (Murray twice). But at the US Open in that time period, 8 players other than the big 3 have won one each.

Yeah it's my favorite slam, in spite of the often dead crowds during the day in Arthur Ashe. It's too far out to make predictions, but I could see Med winning it again if he looks good during the preceding summer swing in North America.

Let's see if Rublev can serve this out.

ETA - the shot off the dive to get to match point was incredible. Good for Rublev.

The 16 year old Russian Andreeva is something else....seems to run every shot down

Still not sure how I feel about Russians even playing.....the not displaying flag is a worthless way to "punish" them

She was a bit of a brat not shaking the umpires hand today when losing to Keys.

The not displaying the flag and no handshakes from Ukrainian players is dumb. Everyone is acting like these players are pushing the buttons to drop bombs.

Did anyone see what happened to Krajicek/Dodig in the 3rd set this morning? I took a break thinking that the 3rd set would go long like the first 2 sets and when I got back they had lost 6-1 !

Brutal. And she's 16 and has as much passion on the court as anyone out there. I'm super impressed. I thought she gave great answers in press conference too. Her love of Andy Murray...the first warning was legit, but deducting a point for that seemed harsh given the situation

BUT you should always shake the hand of the umpire

Alcaraz, Rune, and Sinner have all lived up to expectations thus far. As much as I love seeing Eubanks rise (I thought there was a possibility after seeing him play two high quality sets against Jannik last year in NY) and Rublev do well, I'm rooting for Alcaraz-Med and Sinner-Djokovic semis. I still would be shocked if anyone other than Novak won, assuming he doesn't suffer a significant injury, which I doubt, but it's good to see many of the younger guys flex their muscles in preparation for NY, the most winnable slam for most guys ranked in the top 10 or so for about the past decade.

Eubanks up 2 sets to 1 on Medvedev. But, Medvedev looks like he got his juice back. Eubanks needs to close this match this set.

Yeah Medvedev is a tough out, no matter the surface; somehow, he doesn't get enough credit from the American tennis media.
