I made those comments because they are that good this year. I didn't say they were going undefeated, just that I wouldn't be surprised.

Ok. I'd say an undefeated college baseball season would be the most surprising sports result in my time on earth.

You wouldn't have been surprised if a team would go undefeated when no team had ever finished a season with 5 losses or less? Most would have been stunned.

Good back story information. Like both Graham and Pierce. Played for Graham at Scarborough and against Pierce and those St Pius boys (1980) a lot at Scarborough - and was offered a scholarship to play baseball at Rice (from the late Coach Hall). I still text back and forth to Graham intermittently (I was also his first ever offer of a college scholarship when he took over at San Jac in the fall of 1980). Despise the sips, but am somehow pulling for Pierce to do well (not sure how that happens??). Not sure Berkman or Cruz would have done well as a coach at Rice. Pierce would have definitely been the best option, but that ship has sailed.cypress-ag said:
The back story on Rice and David Pierce is interesting. My good friend played for a Rice and his ex team mates and him talk about how Pierce stayed and stayed at Rice because Graham told him just one more season and it's yours. Graham did it to hold onto Pierce and not lose him on the recruiting trails. Pierce finally had enough and took the Sam Houston spot and then Tulane. Rice ex's realize the glory years are done and they missed the boat with Pierce and Berkman. Cruz May have some success but that roster is not very good at this point. The Berkman story about the Rice job is even better.
Thanks for the info.cypress-ag said:

Can someone who follows the broader scope of college baseball closer than me break down how they are so good this year? It had seemed in 19 and 20 they were struggling and were ready to fire Pierce. Did they just have a couple of down years due to youth? I know in 21 they made their run to Omaha on pitching and it looks like their staff is really good again this year
Better investments in their programs while we treated our baseball program much like football in the early 90's - winning just enough to compete but never really put big resources into the program to match the elites.Rusty GCS said:Psychag said:
Great pitching staff. Could be historically great.
Why is it always them or LSU and never us
He seems like a pretty cool guy. He recognized my sons baseball hat as we were walking thru a restaurant a few weeks ago. He was eating by himself. He asked us to sit down with him and wound up talking to my son about life, baseball, working hard, and lots of really good stories for about 45 min. He said he talked to Garrido about the Texas job before he took it. He said Garrido gave him a whole list of why the Texas job was a huge pain in the ass...but ultimately said...it's Texas...you take that job and don't look back.Andyzipp said:
I'm a little biased because Coach Pierce was my high school coach at St. Pius X a hundred years ago, but he's an excellent coach. It took him a minute to get recruiting where it needed to be, but he was always going to adjust. And he was never under any real fire, outside of internet message boards.

Maybe they're still that good. But that's 2 losses already. And 1 is to Texas State.
LOL. You and D1 baseball alike. We will see if kendall excuses them again this week.emando2000 said:aginlakeway said:KSigAg12 said:

Recruting. I'd be stunned if they don't make a run in Omaha again this year.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had an undefeated season.

Texas remains No. 1 in the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings after going 2-1 at the Shriners College Classic, with a pair of wins over ranked SEC powers Tennessee and LSU. The preseason No. 1 Longhorns took their first loss of the season Sunday against UCLA, but they are sitting pretty at 11-1 overall with five wins against the SEC, counting a sweep of Alabama last week.

Texas state is a ranked team that just took 2 of 3 from Arizona in Arizona. They are a good team.

LOL! This is my buddy. Texas St grad but you could never tell with how much he reps the sips. He even called out one of his friends on FB when we beat Bama saying "You went to Blinn"....well I quickly commented asking how is it any different from you going to Texas State.Gigem314 said:Lots of conflicted Texas State fans...since many of them root for the horns by default.aginlakeway said:
