It's easy.

She had the option 1) to come back finish her degree and get started on a Master's, 2) turn pro, and 3) transfer. Often times track teams have money free up mid-year from XC finishing up their eligibility. To get someone of Tyra's caliber you aren't offering them a partial scholarship; she'll get one of the full scholarship offers. .Transferring at the beginning of the year would cause her to lose hours and spend longer in school. Combining these 3 facts, she probably decided to transfer last summer but didn't want to lose her hours and tu probably didn't have the scholarship dollars either, so by coming in mid-year they got the full scholarship to offer her.

Tyra screwed us out of offering that scholarship to use this year, wasted development time that could have been used on someone else, used our tutors, and used our facilities to train. If she had her name in the portal at the beginning of the year, she would have been locked out of the facilities and she'd have to train on her own.

TRM nice explanation. I agree and have been saying this from day one that it was not an overnight decision. It was well planned and orchestrated. There may be also some merit that she might have wanted to leave at summer since Floreal might have been recruiting her since last year (NCAA west regionals). So the excuse now was she has graduated and wanted to move on to protect her longevity in the sport

did Tyra ever do anything with her bib at the Texas Relays? A picture of that would be fun here.

Wow - this has been an entertaining read, so appreciate the 10 minutes of nearly free entertainment from all who contributed. Only wish so many of the post hadn't been edited out, though I appreciate that some of you captured some of them via the quote feature.

Not a huge track guy, but Taylor appreciate the work you do to keep the community updated on our track program. And yeah, hope Tyra loses every event she enters at tu, but who knows, I may root for her if/when I see her in the Olympics depending on how the coming months unfold.

Just root for Annie Kuntz instead. She is easier to root for in every possible way.

My lord we've been infiltrated by morons. I think you've called a perfect game Taylor. Ignore these idiots. They're clearly not very good at this.

I went down an internet rabbit hole last night and got curious the opinions of y'all that actually know Track & Field: How do we feel these days about Ashtin Zamzow for transferring? While transferring there is treasonous, I don't know anything about the timing or circumstances of her leaving. Does she get a break because of what she and her family have done / are doing in maroon and white?

*** I was hesitant to bump this thread but figured it would come up this week anyway ***

Ashtin Zamzow transferred when I was 15 and living life so I don't know any details on this transfer, but I'm assuming she transferred you know the NORMAL way in the off-season and didn't tell her teammates and coaches she would be back train with them for a semester then bounce lol. Also her boyfriend at the time and now husband was competing for Texas so maybe that played into her decision lol. Here's a cool article about the transfer and how her dad wore an Aggie hat to all of her track meets lol. Seems she was just frustrated with her performance, maybe being in Annie Kunz's shadow didn't help since the fan base adored her because of soccer and her work on TexAgs. Even though Kunz blossomed after Zamzow left so I guess it's a win win. And Kunz is destroying her now so haha! Someone she's more light on the transfer!

Ashtin's situation was different because Wolf Mahler was there and she wanted to go there out of high school, according to that one network's story

I followed the story back then and it is different to current situation. She transferred after her freshman year.
Her mother was also upset with her transfer but she really wanted to be with her boyfriend.

I can tell you she improved a lot while being in Aggieland since coming out of high school especially her javelin throw where she threw 162' here before transferring.

Lol 4 years at texas she improved 10 feet in the javelin, she improved 10 feet 7 months in Aggieland!

Zamzow was much different than Gittens as she transferred during the summer and she wasn't a points scorer. The outrage from Zamzow came from when she called Aggies a cult in the student newspaper.

Maddie Vondra transferred from A&M to them like 4 years and no hard feelings.

AJ transferred after his freshman year. Online there wasn't much hate, but he sat out a year because of transfer rules at that time. He finished a disappointing year for us and we had Deon.

Gracias y'all. Good input for the new kid on the block.

Aggies really had an issue with us being referred to as a cult?

I understand why she crossed out track and doesn't want to talk about it, but what does she want to talk about?

Pretty dumb marketing lmao

But what's funny if she stays here and improves like she did every year she'd be ready to compete at the World Championships in 3 different events and sign a HUGE contract with Nike, Puma, or something… now she's only gonna compete in one event in which she keeps regressing and instead is having to settle for NIL deals… it's been funny but as a former fan I also feel really sad for her. Her career is headed in the wrong direction than where she was this time last year

When you have your husband and father heading up your NIL efforts, expect subpar opportunities.

She legitimately could have already had a 6 figure deal with Nike or Adidas and be one of the premier athletes across the globe headlining World's, but oh well she decided to listen to the phony of a coach at tu, or at least her husband fell for his games lmao… what could've been… she's consistently jumping almost 2 feet below what she usually does and 5 inches lower!

Tyra said she has no regrets about not going back to the heptathlon. It is to preserve her body and professional career.
She said her coach will determine whether she does both long jump and high jump at the Commonwealth games starting the end of the week.

I'm confused. She's no longer a heptathlete? She is not an elite jumper or high jumper IMO, but is an elite overall athlete.

This is from another article

Quote:

Meanwhile, Tyra Gittens was very disappointed with her performance in the Women's long jump qualifying event, yesterday. The T&T athlete disturbed the sand at 6.44 metres to finish tenth in Group "B" and 19th overall. The top 12 jumpers progressed to the final.

"Absolutely gutted," Gittens told the Sunday Express. "But that's part of the game. That's part of the event."

Gittens opened the competition with a 6.22 metres leap, well short of her 6.69 season's best, the 6.75 automatic qualifying mark, and her 6.96 national record. The 24-year-old was 13th at the end of round one, and in need of a big jump to challenge for a berth in the final.

Gittens improved to 6.44m in the second round, temporarily moving into the 12th qualifying spot. By the end of the round, however, she was 14th. Any hopes of getting back into the top 12 were dashed when Gittens fouled on her third and final attempt.

"Just this trip, I made a lot of changes to my mindset going in to training and my mindset overall. And I was very excited to come in. My approach was a lot better than it has been all season. It wasn't so chaotic, but it just was not it today. I hate saying that because I'm not happy with my season either. And it's like 'it wasn't it this time, next time...'

"I would never doubt myself," she continued, "because I believe in myself so much and I have an amazing support system. So it's frustrating whenever I wear our colours and our flag and I don't step up to the plate. I don't put pressure on myself. I just have very high standards. I know what I can do, and my country knows what I can do. It sucks when I don't get there, or even close."

"Oh my gosh, yeah, which is what has been frustrating. From my short approaches I'm jumping further than 6.75. So it was a lot of just not clicking. That's really all it was. I know what I can do based off of practice, and this is very realistic. It's not me lying to myself. I don't like to do that because then it will show on the runway."

I guess she is shame to admit she made a horrible mistake leaving Texas A&M

Lmao a 24 year old athlete who will only compete in what her coach of 7 months will tell her to

But she needs to be 6.9m+ to have a shot in any long jump competition, and I don't think she will ever be competing for a medal in the high jump. This is baffling to me. If she can make a living the other way - more power to her. This just sounds bonkers to me.

Exactly she would have medaled this year assuming she progressed like she did while she was at A&M! Her long jump is really inconsistent and she was never close to her PR all year! We saw Lamara Distin needing to jump 6'6 to get top 10 in the world this past week! Tyra can't clear 6'0 consistently lol

The moral of the story that we learned here is that she is letting her husband/family and new Coach control her career… if we know anything Pat Henry does what's best for his athletes and will take care of them. She's learning that now as she's going through one of her worst seasons and tries to stay relevant in the track world. If this continues who knows if she gets and world championship standard next year. She went from Bowerman Finalist, 3x NCAA Champion, NCAA Record Holder, Olympic Finalist… to 19th in the world in one event… embarrassing, she should feel ashamed for putting a huge dent in her career

When her coach took over at tu, he promised them a national championship in 3 years and he did get one for them indoors 2022 for men but happily he didn't get one for the women. He probably poach a lot of athletes to get them to go there but many have left this year

Are you saying she would have medaled in the LJ or HJ if she stayed at A&M? If so, I disagree. I think she would have medaled in the hept but not the individual events.
