I'm surprised that Australia doesn't just dominate swimming. We vacationed there a couple years ago and I was worried about finding pools as I was training for a triathlon....not a problem at all. The two hotels we stayed at had 25m lap pools. An Airbnb condo we stayed at also had a 25m lap pool. The one airbnb house we stayed at had a lap pool a 1/4 a mile away. And every pool was crowded. Seems like everybody swims over there
The system in the US is designed for domination because of swimming at the collegiate level. Seems like half the international swimmers are on on college teams in the US. I have no idea what higher education is like in Australia, but I can't imagine it being close to the US. Maybe I'm wrong.

But it seems everyone swims growing up there. It just seems instilled in the culture. When everyone grows up doing it like that you're going to have a larger talent pool and more competition.
I used to travel a lot for work. It's impossible to find a pool to swim in the us. I'd usually have to find a gym with a pool and pay a stupid expensive guest pass.
I was shocked that hotels have lap pools there, don't think I've ever seen that here. Plus they have public lap pools all over. It was literally easier for me to get laps in over there than when I'm home.

The Jacoby win was awesome and helped salvage what has been a pretty dang lackluster US showing so far.
Well most of the Australian population lives on the coast or near it, so they all grow up in the water whether its pool or ocean.
A few days late to the party here, but the Tunisia swimmer grabbing gold in the 400 freestyle out of lane 8 was amazing.
Seriously? It's not like she laid an egg (cough, Biles), she just swam the 2nd fastest 400 she's ever swam. She went 3:57.36, and she's only gone under 3:58 2 other times (2016 WR and 2018), shoot, the last time she even went under 3:59 was back in 2018. Oh, and the swim that beat her just also happened to be the 2nd fastest swim in the history of the event. Ledecky by no means under performed, she had a great race and just got beat by a better swimmer, it happens.Drawkcab said:

I'm thinking it may be some very misguided attempt by Japan to try to provide some "crowd" noise given there is no crowd
It was the worst of her four events and she is fifth in the world at it. She'll end up with two golds and a silver in the other three -- she still as good as any female on any other team.
