Annie is an Olympian! Aggie, former TexAgs team member Annie Kunz is Tokyo bound

She did it!

After years of training for the 2020 Summer Olympics, including the disorientation of a pandemic-delayed Games, former two-sport Aggie athlete and TexAgs team member Annie Kunz is headed to Tokyo.

Undeterred by either the pressure of the long-anticipated Olympic Trials or a wilting, record-breaking Pacific Northwest heat wave that delayed the final event of the women’s heptathlon, Kunz won the Trials and exceeded the Olympic Standard of 6,420 points for the first time in her career, racking up 6,703 points. That combination sealed her trip to the upcoming Summer Games in Japan.

Far from showing any hint of intimidation in the face of the biggest meet of her life, Kunz thrived on the big stage, setting personal records in six of the seven events and breaking the Olympic Trials record in the shot put with a heave of 15.73 meters (51 ft, 7 ¼ in).

Kunz was a two-sport athlete at Texas A&M with tenures on both the Aggie Soccer and Track & Field teams between 2011 and 2016. She also worked as an intern and then a reporter at TexAgs from 2014 to 2016. She spoke about her Olympic aspirations over four years ago on TexAgs Radio.

Entering the Trials, Kunz’s previous career-best heptathlon score was 6,153 in 2019. To qualify for Tokyo, she needed a career performance to push her over the Olympic Standard and into the top three finishers. She got that and then some.

Kunz surged to the top of the standings after four events at the end of day one, posting personal bests in the high jump and 200 meters and breaking the Trials record in the shot put. She also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles and closed the day with 4,042 points and three events to come on Sunday.

She came out just as hot on Sunday, again knocking out personal bests in both the long jump and the javelin. Following six events, Kunz was second in the standings and on pace to exceed the Olympic Standard.

That's when things got weird in Oregon. With temperatures soaring — an NBC camera showed a thermometer approaching 150 degrees at track level — the remaining events were suspended for several hours.

Unfazed by yet another delay, Kunz posted another personal best in the 800 meters, which pushed her back into first place and secured her spot in the Tokyo Olympics.
