Great first day! The girls kick off their championship run with Jenna Ellis in the javelin at 1:30 and then at 3:00 Deborah Acquah, Tyra Gittens, Zhane Smith, and Taryn Milton will compete in the important long jump! Have a good night y'all and see ya tomorrow!

Coach Pat Henry on his sprinters

on Lance Broome and Devon Achane:
"Lance ran fast tonight and he looked good doing it. It's fun to watch those two guys. Lance gets a little more quarter mile work now, which is tough on a sprinter. He's starting to understand that, and so is Achane. They are understanding why we're doing it. That's what fun to see, especially as a coach. It's fun to see their training starting to make a difference and I feel good about that right now."

I was surprised at the light turnout. Probably 1/2 or less than the SEC meet attendance. The NCAA site says general public tickets aren't available and the TAMU site isn't the easiest to find.

Tickets were available at the gate last night and the $3 extra fee was not charged. Transportation Services is charging $5 to park but then I didn't see any traffic control at the intersection of Penberthy and Tom Chandler. I thought the crowd was okay for a Wednesday night and it being a being a first round. They do have some souvenirs, mostly shirts and hats, being sold. If you get hungry after 8:30 tonight you'll have to wait until you leave because the concession stands closed at 8:30 before the 200 heats. I sat near the starting line and the officials do a really good job of keeping things moving.

Big shout out to everyone posting updates and their impressions of the meet. This is the only way I can keep up right now, so keep it coming for all of us that are stopping in here periodically for the updates!

Short sprint is just crazy on the men side in the NCAA.
Imagine to make top 24 in both East and West Regionals, you have to run about 10.30 or better in the 100m.
To make the top 12 will b tough might be 10.15 or better

it's been a wild year. It seemed every event is performing better than any in recent history. I'm sure it's a mix of it being an Olympic year and everyone had time off to train (well the ones who took advantage of it! I did not think the NCAA would be this fast!

Lol I love the guy that just yells at everyone to hurry up and keep it moving and tells them to get in their lanes

One thing that gets me is Achane gets left in the blocks and still runs 10.04. That's fast.

RIGHT! The first 5 meters him and Yeboah were left in the dust, but their drive phase really carried them over the top! I think Achane was a little he distant to start so fast since he was dealing with hamstring issues around conference! But now that he looks healthy I think he hits under a 10.10 with legal wind and a 20.2! Even helps out the relay! I'm so pumped to see what he's going to do Friday! Along with Yeboah and Broome who ran their best races as an Aggie!

Not gonna lie, I'm usually just a football guy, but Achane, Mu, and a few others have got me refreshing this thread every 5 minutes.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the continued combination of football and track.

They were selling beers at conference a few weeks ago, so I'm sure they're selling some this weekend unless the ncaa prohibits at championship events, but there should be beer!

I had Red Raiders, Sooners, SILers, Central Arkansas doodads, Bears, and Houston Cougars around me. They were all drinking beer and showing skin. In some cases, more than I cared to see.

It's because the meet and the genders are so spread out (Men -- Wed & Fr; Women -- Thu & Sat). The gender separation alone could cut the crowd in half each day. In a normal meet situation, everybody is there competing on the same days.

Combine that with almost all the tickets being gobbled up by athlete's families (there are over 1,700 athlete competing)...it makes the attendance situation one in which not everyone will be there at once.

Jenna Ellis is 12th after the 1st flight in the javelin. In all likelihood, she will not advance.

Here's to hoping 32 other girls scratch all 3, lol in all seriousness she has a good season with a 151'7 PR! Hopefully next season she can get to the 160-170's and Natalie Scheifele can come back healthy! Not to mention the All American recruit Katelyn Fairchild!

Is there a reason Athing is not running the 800m? Couldn't we use those points?

You can only do the 400 or the 800 and she'll will likely get those same points in the 400.

She will also knock USC and Arkansas -- two of our main competitors for the NCAA Championship -- off a bunch a points by running the 400.

She also wants that NCAA 400 record too.

Good question! it's nearly impossible for a runner to run the 400, 800, and 4x400 all in one meet. Especially since she would have to do each one twice at nationals, and both individual races twice here! And given the Olympic trials is a week after nationals, that would be too much wear and tear on her body when she would have to run 3 fast 800's! Also one of our biggest competitors for a national title is USC and they have 7 runners in that event today, we need to knock out as many of them as we can to help out title chances. Her only doing the 800 would give a door for a USC girl to win the 400 and others to score! Hope this explanation helps, sorry if it's too long!

Ellis just graduated I believe. Fairchild will more than make up for her absence though.

Darn. Wonder if she'll decide to come back and use the extra year of eligibility. Fairchild is going to be a contender I hope. Her Heather Abadie (pole vault), Kennedy Wade (4x400, 400), and Bailey Goggans (800) is a damn good class ready to contribute! I also wonder what happened to Angellica Street the number one 2020 javelin recruit who's not on the roster?

Oh No - that is great information. I just was thinking that would be 30 points at nationals almost guaranteed assuming she isn't upset in the finals. But, I get that this is about athlete development and safety over national championships ultimately.

Taejha Badal not a bad add either. I would also assume the Aggies aren't done adding people either with recruiting about to ramp up next week.

Wow did not know we signed her!!! She's an excellent sprinter with 11.3 and 23.6 speed! The team has yet to put anything out after its initial signing day, but I'm so glad we got her on board! What a great class! And yeah I'm sure add our success and scholarships and we'll get to go big game hunting without a doubt!

Taryn Milton with a HUGE PR on what could have been the last jump of her career. She has a VERY solid shot at making NCAA's with that 21+ foot jump.

So happy for Taryn, what an amazing jump to give her the best shot possible at nationals, and you know a huge PR like that will motivate all the other ladies!
