The whole minute marker alignment issue with my SKX007 has kind of turned me off from the idea of spending a lot of money on a Seiko. I don't want to spend all that money and have that issue again. I'm OK with it on my $150 SKX007, but I've heard of higher end Seikos having similar issues.

What other dive watches would you recommend for around $1000?
Nobody has heard of them but for under $1,000- I don't think there is a neater dive watch than TWCO. Check out the website and let me know what you think. They look pretty sweet on a strap also. One of the guys in my office has one.

I've liked watches since I was a kid but never have gotten into the high end watch game...I'd like to, but I feel completely ignorant about high end watches.

I was talking with some friends the other day and it dawned on me that some timepieces actually appreciate in value, or at least hold their value. This would make it much more justifiable as a purchase in my mind. However, my question is how do you determine which watches hold their value? For instance does every "special edition" of a big brand (rolex for instance) hold its value and eventually appreciate or are some just marketing gimmicks that no true "collector" wants?

There's probably no way to be totally certain you're buying an investment piece, but if I were interested in learning more about trying to make an educated guess on that, where would I start?

I personally wouldnt by a watch expecting it to hold value.

That's fine. But there are watches that do hold value. If I wanted to try to identify those, how would I do it?

There's really no way tell which ones will appreciate in value. It's like buying a car, some you think would appreciate don't and some that do make you scratch your head. Maybe some of the precious metals (solid gold or platinum) might appreciate due to the commodity, but it's really a crap shoot.

I bought my Omega because I loved the way it felt and looked, and I see them on the used market for $5-700 more than I paid for it new from an AD in 2007. I didn't think it would increase in value, but the popularity of the "Bond" watch (blue) kind of kept this one under the radar, coupled with the end of the model in '08 or '09, the demand is exceeding the supply on the used market and they are going for a premium.

When I went to get my Rolex, I didn't like the new ceramics due to the width of the lugs, so I knew I had to look on the used market for one. I found a brand new in box (stickers still attached) Z-serial from a collector in Seattle and bought it. I paid more for the watch than it originally went for, but less than a new ceramic sub. It came down to supply/demand. If I go to sell it now, I'll lose some money but I'll still recoup most of what I paid for it.

I recently saw a Rolex GMT Master Pepsi that was BNIB as well with an asking price of $11k. Not sure what the final agreed price was, but it went rather quick due to the Pepsi being a desired model and production ending in '07. I'd venture to guess the price of the watch from the AD was around $5-6k. They reintroduced it last year but only as a white gold model. Not too many are able to fork over $30k for a watch.

One thing I think helps with keeping value up is the price increases that seem to come every year. I paid less thank $2k for my Omega and a new SMP is around $3k now. How much a new Rolex has increased in the past 10 years would make your head spin.

**edit**
If there's one guaranteed "investment" for a watch, I'd suggest setting aside $50-75k, spend the next couple of years searching for a 5513 or 5514 COMEX Submariner, buy watch, and put it in a safety deposit box for about 10 years.

I don't think you really can.

That is why I prefer to buy what I like and be surprised if it holds its value.

I was going to start a different thread, but I found this one, and I think I found the right place to get some opinions offered. I've been wanting a luxury watch for some time, and it is finally getting to the point where I am fortunate enough to make that purchase (not grand complication fortunate, but something nice). Actually, my wife is purchasing it for me as a 10th anniversary gift. I want a chronograph with mechanical movement. I've got it narrowed down to a couple.

1st: The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. I have it narrowed down to two specific options.

http://www.rolex.com/watches/cosmograph-daytona/m116523-0056.html#cfgvar=material

2nd: I'm a fan of Tiffany. Got my wife's engagement ring and wedding band from there. Their service is really good.

http://www.tiffany.com/watches/all-watches/tiffany-ct60-chronograph-42-mm-34683816?fromGrid=1&search_params=p+1-n+10000-c+288171-s+1-r+-t+-ni+1-x+-lr+-hr+-ri+-mi+-pp+118+4&search=0&origin=browse&searchkeyword=&trackpdp=bg&fromcid=288171

I like the Daytona's size at 40mm, and as for the CT60, I don't want to go any bigger than 42. If ya'll have any other suggestions or input, I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry I only posted links.

I wear a tux maybe once every 5 year, and a suit maybe twice a year.....so these are things I care little about for the most part.

One of my wedding photos has me wearing a watch like that one, and a Stihl gimme cap.....yeah, my wife still gets pissed when she looks at it.

I've bought myself a new watch every year I accomplish a business goal I set for myself at the start of the year. As soon as I accomplish it I allow myself to buy a new watch. My newest is the Breitling Cockpit b50 shown below along with the rest of my collection
