Five Thoughts: #19 Texas A&M 75, #7 Kentucky 67

1. Your 2012-2013 Texas Aggies are the champions of the Southeastern Conference. The team who started the season 0-3 is a champion. The team who had a starter quit on them shortly after the season began is a champion. The team who dropped four of their last five games of the regular season is a champion. Let that sink in for a moment.

To me, that shows what a masterful coach A&M has in Gary Blair. Blair has taken his team to the conference final every year for the past six seasons, winning it now three times. Each time the Aggies have won the crown, they have been seeded fourth overall.

But it could be argued that this was his most impressive coaching job yet. Blair brought in six new freshman this year, two of which were regular starters (Courtney Williams and Courtney Walker) and another two who saw significant minutes throughout the season (Jordan Jones and Peyton Little). While those four freshman, along with Chelsea Jennings and Curtyce Knox, made up the second best recruiting class in the country, Blair and his staff still had to teach them to deal with the speed of the college game compared to that of high school. To watch the growth and development of those four, specifically the Courtneys, over the course of this season has been something extremely fun to watch.

Coach Blair has meant a lot to me. A lot of people gave up on me and said I was a flop. Coach Blair stuck with me. He said, I need you to lead my team. - Kelsey Bone on Gary Blair {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"left","Quote":"Coach Blair has meant a lot to me. A lot of people gave up on me and said I was a flop. 2. Without question, the player of the game in this one was Kelsey Bone. Bone turned in her 14th double-double of the year, dropping 18 points and 15 rebounds. That was done in only 28 minutes of play because the junior found herself in foul trouble early in the first half. Because of that foul trouble, as well as foul trouble against Tennessee yesterday, Bone seemed to be a little more fresh down the stretch than any of the other nine players on the court. In the post-game press conference, Bone called the foul trouble a "blessing in disguise" and in my opinion, I couldn't agree more. But if you're going to comment on it being a good thing in the end that Bone was on the bench, you have to give a tip of the hat to Karla Gilbert for playing big minutes in her place.

While Bone proves time and time again to be invaluable to the A&M squad, A&M couldn't have won this without great play from their starters once again. For the second time in two days, both against top-10 opponents, four of the Aggie starters finished the day in double figures.

3. With 13:37 left in the game, Bria Goss hit a three-pointer to pull Kentucky within three points of A&M. But that would be the Wildcats' last basket for over six minutes. From that point on, A&M turned up the defensive intensity more than I've seen all season, and it allowed them to grow an 11-point lead with 7:46 left. During that stretch, Kentucky went 0-of-9 from the floor and turned the ball over to the Aggies twice.

Blair has always operated differently than most coaches by having an assistant as his 'defensive coordinator'. Vic Schaefer led the Aggies defense during their runs to the Big 12 Championship in 2008 and 2010 as well as the national title run in 2011, but he left after the end of last season to take the head coaching job at Mississippi State. That left a hole in the Aggie staff that Blair filled with former LSU assistant coach Bob Starkey. In this weekend's SEC Tournament, Starkey's defense held South Carolina nine points below their average, Tennessee 16 points below their average and Kentucky 8.6 points below their usual mark.

Matt Sachs, TexAgs Junior Kelsey Bone scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the victory over Kentucky. {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"right","Size":"large","Caption":"Junior Kelsey Bone scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the victory over Kentucky.","MediaItemID":14902}
4. A&M can scratch another item off their SEC to-do list after Sunday's victory. After a Heisman Trophy, defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa in football and beating Kentucky in Rupp Arena in basketball, A&M can finally put an SEC Championship among the other honors they have received this year.

Earlier in the year, both the soccer and volleyball teams earned the western division crown, and track star Henry Lelei won the 3,000 meters SEC indoor title last month as well as the men's cross country title back in October, but Sunday marked the first team trophy acquired by the Aggies.

5. Now that the SEC Tournament is behind them, Blair and the Aggies turn their attention to an even bigger prize. A&M will find out their seeding for the NCAA Tournament on March 18th, but it's never too early to speculate where they will fall.

Coming into the SEC Tournament, A&M possessed one of the lower four-seeds in the tournament. In my mind, beating South Carolina locked in no worse than a four-seed, beating Tennessee moved them into a low three-seed and beating Kentucky today locked in a three-seed and at the very least puts them in talks for one of the two-seeds. Three wins over top-20 teams, two of them over top-10 squads, does wonders for your tournament resume. A&M can also boast that they defeated every single team in their conference at least once this year.

The Aggies will play host to the first two rounds of the tournament, so anything other than at-least a berth in the Sweet 16 would be disappointing. Most bracket experts have A&M paired with one-seeded Baylor in the Elite Eight, should the Aggies advance that far which would make for a very interesting matchup.

An extra note: Bone was named tournament MVP. Bone, Walker and Bellock were all named to the all-tournament team.

Ronnie,

Good article but I might disagree with talks of A&M as a #2 seed when a #3 seed is more reasonable

UK should get the #2 seed over A&M based on schedule and performance

UK vs A&M non conference
Baylor : UK lost @ Waco and A&M did not play
Louisville : UK won @ Louisville and A&M lost @ Louisville
DePaul : UK won and A&M did not play (Charlie Creme has the Blue Demons as a #10 seed)
Penn State : A&M loss at home and UK did not play
Connecticut : A&M loss at home and UK did not play
Notre Dame : A&M lost at home and UK did not play

On a side note BU discontinued their game with A&M because Baylor let Deloss Dodds tell them what to do. This year Notre Dame and Duke did not renew with UK (which is why UK was forced to substitute DePaul from the Big East) and both will renew with UK next season. Had they played again this season as planned UK would have faced Notre Dame in Rupp (the UK vs DePaul game drew 18,488 fans) and Duke in Cameron. UK has never lost to Duke or Notre Dame in games played in Lexington. UK has never won games played @ Notre Dame or Duke.

secondary non conference
Marist : UK beat Marist who won their 8th MAAC title for their NCAA berth
MTSU : UK beat MTSU who won the Sun Belt and a NCAA berth
Liberty : A&M won and Liberty is in Semi for the Big South

SEC top teams
UK beat A&M 2 out of 3 head to head - advantage UK

Tennessee : UK 1-0 and A&M 1-1
Georgia : UK 1-1 and A&M 1-0
South Carolina : UK 1-1 and A&M 2-0
LSU : UK 1-1 and A&M 1-1
Vanderbilt : UK 2-0 and A&M 1-1

SEC bottom teams
Thankfully neither team lost to a SEC team in the bottom half

You could also say, A&M beat every team in the SEC; Kentucky did not. A&M won the SEC conference tournament; Tennessee won the SEC regular season title; Kentucky won neither. There are pros and cons to the top 3 teams in the SEC getting a 2 seed. Personally, I don't think it really matters. What REALLY matters is what region you're placed in at this point.

...and we didn't lose to Notre Dame at home...it was at a neutral site at a tournament in the beginning of the season.

What are the comparable strength of schedules for the A&M, Tennessee and Kentucky?

Also, in my honest opinion, what will hold A&M back from a #2 seed will be 9 losses (regardless of whom and when the loss occurred).

But, again, in terms of which seed you get and why (comparing 2 vs 3); doesn't really matter. A 2 will meet a 3 and a 1 will meet a 4 in the tourney.

We are #10 in the NCAA RPI so that will be a 3 seed. For a team that starts 2 freshmen and lost 3 starters from the Championhsip Team, you have to be impressed. And in Charlie Creme's first bracketology in December he had us out of the tournament. Great effort and performance by the players and staff.

The issue is recognition of the SEC in getting a #1 seed.

Baylor played a tough schedule and deserves a #1 seed
Stanford played a tough schedule and deserves a #1 seed
Notre Dame played a tough schedule and deserves a #1 seed (just wish they had not backed out of the Rupp game)

The issue is what to do with the next group
Duke has many wins but a very weak schedule
Cal beat Stanford but has a weak schedule
Vols had the toughest schedule in the US but have the blemishes of the UTC and MU losses
Uconn may have a #2 seed record but will get a #1 seed and play close to home

The B1G befuddles me as the more games I watch the less sense they make. Penn State is leading but gets beat by B1G bottom feeders Minnesota and Wisconsin.

I know I am a SEC homer but I really believe they are the best conference in the country this season yet they will not get a team with a #1 seed and UK is their best hope for a #2. This is what is wrong with a media that puts too much focus on a handful of teams at the exclusion of some very good teams in the next group down.

Vols won the regular season
A&M won the tourney
UK did not lose to a school that was not ranked

That alone tells me the conference is competitive and balanced but right on their heels are :

South Carolina - a good team that does not get enough media exposure
Georgia - a good team with 5 previous Final Fours
LSU - same as Georgia and fast on the rise with their new coach
Vanderbilt - injury bug has kept them in the shadows but they are good when healthy

Below them are dangerous schools on a good night
Arkansas - played UO (3pts) UGA (4pts) USC (3pts) and took 3 more games to OT
Florida - fell apart in the second half of the season
Missouri - has a dangerous 3 game and upset UT and USC

Even the bottom feeders have high spots
Auburn has some good players just not enough depth to give them a breather
Mississippi State is struggling with a new staff but still upset the Dawgs
Alabama - beat UVA in the pre conference
Ole Miss - okay not much from the Rebs this season but still had a winning record in the pre conference

Even with all that competition and good games the media still focuses on just Baylor (Griner) / Uconn (history) / Notre Dame (history and they play Uconn) / Duke (weak schedule but ESPN loves them) because they seem afraid to let the SEC get the better coverage to dominate yet another sport like they have in football / basketball / baseball.

aggiedrjdub,

As the newest member of the SEC you will learn what old timers have had to deal with for decades in overall anti SEC hate and bias. The SEC has almost 40 Final Fours spread among about half of the schools in the conference. The next closest conference is about half of that yet the SEC never gets the exposure of a top conference and is never perceived as such. When you point out the facts to the folks in the ACC, Big East, and B12 they still refuse to believe it.

Kentucky is a solid #2 yet they will once again sent them to BFE for the tourney and never seem to have them play in close proximity to home. The upside for A&M and UT is they are hosting so they will not send them to BFE land. Yet again Columbus is hosting but they will probably get sent to the west yet again.

If I am KY, I would be hoping to be a no. 2 seed in Stanford's Regional. I do not think KY can beat ND, bu or UCONN, so hoping for closer to home makes a trip to the Final 4 tougher....imo.
I guess a sub regional close to home would be nice.....choices in Stanford regional are Spokane, Baton Rouge and Newark...won't send KY to Stanford sub regional.

BTW...SEC is projected to get 7 teams in the NCAA tournament...only the Big East with 8 has more.

Re the Ags vs. UK, the Ags also had one more point total in the 3 games, and I think an end of the season win by 8 in a game on a neutral court would weigh heavy in a selection committee's decision. I do think UK gets a 2 seed but I would not call it solid.

Using Real Time RPI, the Ags rank 2 on SOS and UK is 13th

I guess the Ags "bad" losses are to Vandy and LSU...even though their SOS is 17th and 25th,
whereas UK lost at home to GA with a 54 rank on strength of schedule...a team the Ags blew out on the Dawgs home court.

So, if a selection committee looks at RPI and tournament success at the end of the season, the Ags look great! If they look at number of losses, then Ags don't look as good.

There are some politics involved in the seedings and destinations.

cs69ag, I think UK would be alright with Notre Dame and the "blue mist" would be felt in Columbus or Louisville but will not exist if they are put on the west coast. Kentucky was supposed to play them this year in Rupp but ND backed out. Considering DePaul as the replacement team drew around 18.5K and Rupp holds 24 K I have a feeling UK vs ND would have been a near sellout and 24,000 has an effect on the visiting team. My guess is UK wins that game if it is played just because the atmosphere would have been off the hook. Last year UK had ND on the ropes in South Bend but Natalie Novosel (who played for Lexington Catholic) did not miss a FT the whole game and was the key to the ND win. She has now graduated. The year before UK beat ND so Matthew can beat Muffet.

I think UK can beat Uconn if the refs let them play. When they met last year UK played the Huskies on their turf and was about even in the first half (and an exciting game to watch) but in the second half the refs called it very ticky tack. Uconn got to the FT line around 35 times and that accounted for a big chunk of their second half points when they made close to 90% of their attempts.

Baylor is the question mark. UK played them @ Waco in the second game of the season and got destroyed. On a neutral court with a year under their belt I think UK makes it a closer game. The big issue again is if the refs let UK run and do not blow the whistle every time they go up the court. If I remember correctly they called about 30 fouls on UK and about 15 on BU. I do not think Griner and Simms had 5 total fouls between them and UK's Mathis got in foul trouble early before fouling out with 5 - 10 min left in the game.

As for the cross between UK - UGA - A&M you do realize that was UK's first loss at home since I think the Vols beat them back 2 or 3 years ago and it was a very close game. In that same time frame UK beat Notre Dame, Duke, Louisville, and an assortment of top SEC schools. I think this senior class has only lost 3 games in Lexington during their entire playing career. 2 of those were to Georgia and 1 was to Tennessee so that is not terrible.

As for loss comparison this season :

UK - 5 losses all to teams that have been ranked this season
11/13 Loss @ Baylor by 34 (only non conference loss this season) - point spread is close to A&M vs Uconn but A&M lost at home
01/24 Loss @ South Carolina by 5
02/03 Loss vs Georgia by 4
02/24 Loss @ LSU by 5 (Kenney came off the bench after her grandfather passed away and went 5-5 from 3 point land and only missed 1 FT on her way to 22 points playing an almost perfect game)
03/10 Loss vs A&M in SEC tourney championship by 8

A&M - 9 losses
11/09 Loss @ Louisville (a team UK beat @ Louisville)
11/14 Loss vs Penn State by 5 to a team that lost to Minnesota and Wisconsin
11/18 Loss vs Connecticut by 31 points
12/21 Loss vs Notre Dame in Las Vegas by 9 points
01/10 Loss @ UK by 3 points
02/18 Loss vs UK by 4 points at HOME - A&M did not win at home but UK beat A&M at their home
02/24 Loss @ Vandy by 10 points (UK beat Vandy in Nashville by 22 points!)
02/28 Loss @ Tennessee by 10 points (UK beat UT by 13 points)
03/03 Loss vs LSU by 15 points at home (UK beat LSU by 7 at home but lost to the Tigers by 5 in Baton Rouge)

BTW...SEC is projected to get 7 teams in the NCAA tournament...only the Big East with 8 has more.

This is true but the Big East will get (2) #1 seeds and the SEC will be lucky to get (1) #2 seeds. If UK gets a #2 seed they will probably send them out west or to the east coast. Neither place is in driving distance from Lexington, KY when YUM is about an hour away (and would sell very well in YUM) and Columbus is about 3 hours away. What other #2 seed will have to play probably 12 - 24 hours drive time away from home? Especially when the #2 seed is drawing Top 10 numbers in attendance and UK vs ND or UK vs UL would sell very well. UK game @ ND last year SOLD OUT and UK vs UL would best sell the 22,000 seats in YUM.

Big East = 8
#1 seeds = Uconn (home) and Notre Dame (Columbus)
#5 seeds = Louisville (home)
#7 seeds = Syracuse (home game for Iowa)
#8 seeds = Villanova (home game for Stanford)
#10 seeds = Saint Johns (home) / USF (home game for Duke) / DePaul (home game for LSU)

SEC = 7
#1 seeds = NONE
#2 seeds = Kentucky (home game for Saint John's)
#3 seeds = Tennessee (home) and A&M (home)
#4 seeds = Georgia (home game for Delaware)
#5 seeds = South Carolina (home game for Terps)
#7 seeds = LSU (home)
#9 seeds = Vanderbilt (Columbus)

ACC = 5
#1 seeds = possibly Duke (home) tho CC has them as a #2 seed
#4 seeds = Maryland (home) and UNC (about 8 hr drive to Louisville)
#6 seeds = Florida State (home for A&M)
#9 seeds = Miami (home game for Uconn)

If no SEC team is below a #9 seed and they have 7 teams in that means they should have a possible #1 seed and (2) possible #2 seeds. St Johns is in because they are hosting so in theory they would be tied with the SEC for 7 teams in. Interesting is if Duke gets bumped to a #1 seed and displaces Uconn. If a Big East team gets displaced I am guessing only an ACC team gets the love needed to do it. Teams that sleep in their own beds (last year Uconn never played farther than about 1/2 hour to 1 hour from Storrs from the end of the regular season till the Final Four) should have a competitive edge. They really need to make it where the Top 16 teams play at home in the first rounds and get away from all this political stuff.

This year these teams would play at home (based on CC seeds)
#1 = Uconn, Notre Dame, Stanford, Baylor
#2 = Kentucky, Duke, Penn State, California
#3 = Tennessee, Texas A&M, Nebraska, UCLA
#4 = Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Dayton

That would mean the SEC would host 4 of 16 games or 25%
SEC = 4 instead of 2 (if you count A&M as still in B12 when they landed the host)
ACC = 3 instead of 2
PAC = 3 instead of 2
B1G = 2 would be same (although 2 Big East area hosts will be heading to the B1G soon)
BigE = 2 instead of 4
B12 = 1 instead of 2 (3 if you count A&M)
A10 = 1 instead of 0 (A10 has good women's BB and some nice venues)

ps, apology for not breaking this into several posts as it was longer than I thought it would be.

aggiedrjdub,

I was cheering A&M on in Indy when they played for the NC (we got seats near mid court about 8 rows up) and have seen A&M play live several times this year. I would much rather see top SEC teams get national feeds over Big East and ACC teams. I am retired which is why I have so much free time and have been following and supporting WCBB since Title IX (I remember Imaculata)

I am really happy to have A&M in the SEC and hope their presence will lead to a resurgence of SEC west teams. Auburn was a beast early on and Bama and Arky were good. With A&M and LSU anchoring the west I would love to see the west rise back up.

The importance of Bone and Bellock both hitting their stride can not be underestimated. Their current level of play makes this a completely different team than earlier in the season.
