Week 8's Overnight Sensation: KJ Edwards, Running Back

With just eight carries, KJ Edwards led the Aggie running game with 43 yards, but a contusion limited the rookie ball-carrier's impact in the second half of Texas A&M's 31-20 loss at Alabama. Through eight games, Edwards is averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

Each Monday during the 2026 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance over the weekend and earned the distinction of being the week’s “Overnight Sensation.”

As the wins become scarce, the Overnight Sensations become few and far between.

Yet, one freshman continues to make the 12th Man take notice amid turmoil.

In Texas A&M’s 31-20 loss to No. 13 Alabama, running back KJ Edwards turned heads again in an injury-shortened outing.

Rushing for 43 yards on eight attempts, the numbers aren’t glamorous, but not much was on Saturday. For an offense that has struggled to move the chains all season, the Aggies will take 5.4 yards per carry all day from the Carthage product.

Earning his third start of the season, Edwards’ work on the field is clearly being rewarded, getting the nod over veteran back Rueben Owens II and second-year standout Jamarion Morrow.

KJ Edwards is averaging 6.5 yards per carry through eight games this season.

Playing a season-high 29 snaps, Edwards looked shifty out of the gate. His most memorable run was an 18-yard gain in the first quarter that helped set up a touchdown drive for Texas A&M, as Marcel Reed responded after an abysmal set of offensive drives by finding Mario Craver in the end zone.

Edwards was efficient when handed the rock in the first quarter. That was until an injury cut his day short.

“He got banged up. He got leg-whipped. He was trying to fight through it. We got him back a little bit in the second half,” head coach Mike Elko said. “He had a deep contusion we were trying to work out and just couldn’t get worked out.

“Obviously, he is our back and went with him. He was running really well. At some point towards the end of the first half, he got leg-whipped on a run and couldn't get it loose.”

Coincidentally, A&M’s run game was hampered with Edwards on the bench. Morrow and Owens split carries in the third, but nothing really ignited the offense. With 15 total yards in the fourth, the run game contributed little to nothing, with Morrow managing one 2-yard pickup.

Needing two scores to mount a comeback attempt against the Tide, A&M’s offense went lifeless, and the banged-up Edwards couldn’t resuscitate it.

The bye week comes at a great time for the rookie as the Aggies aim to get him healthy and ready to go for their November stretch. With 55 carries for 360 yards so far, Edwards has already become the Aggies’ leading rusher, and a November without him doesn’t appear promising.

Edwards’ performance, though cut short, once again highlighted his importance to what Holmon Wiggins is trying to accomplish. With a week to regroup and rest, the hope is that a healthy Edwards can provide enough burst for a short-circuiting offense to flow more than it has in previous weeks.
