Aggie Flashback with Dan Campbell
Notes from the Dan Campbell Interview
* After a week off, the Dolphins staff has started back to work and is trying to figure out what went wrong and what went right with the 2012 season.
* At last week’s national championship game, he met both Luke Joeckel and Johnny Manziel when they came up to the owner’s box to visit with some of their former coaches. He told them he was proud of both of them and that it’s a great time to be an Aggie.
* It’s great being in the Dolphins organization and being around a bunch of Aggies. When he was done playing and decided to get into coaching, he called Mike Sherman and was able to build a good relationship that eventually carried over to Miami. He believes that Sherman is one of those guys that is a pleasure to work with, and a pleasure to work for.
* He was not very fired up about filming HBO’s Hard Knocks, but it wasn’t his decision and the head coach wanted it done for a number of reasons. Once it was all over with, he understands why the decision to do it was made and also understands that people are trying to put Miami back on the map.
* He was able to watch more A&M games this season than he has ever been able to because he is located in the south and the Aggies are now in the SEC. He was able to watch about eight games this season and couldn’t be more proud of the guys after the expectations going in being so low. He was hoping for the Aggies to win six or seven this season, so when the team won 11, he was pleasantly surprised.
* You could definitely tell from watching how important chemistry was to the success of the A&M football team this season. Every really good team, on every level, has the right mix of leadership and play makers, the 2012 A&M team included.
* It’s tough to speculate on Manziel’s NFL ability because he is such a young player. There is no denying that he is a player like Russell Wilson, Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick, and the league may be trending to that type of quarterback, but trends definitely come and go and NFL defenses learn to catch up pretty quick. By the time Manziel is ready to come out, who knows if that trend will still be existent.
* Just like the 1998 Big 12 Championship team he played on while at A&M, the 2012 team understands that while you don’t want to fly off your rocker after a loss, it’s still not o.k. to lose. The taste of losing shouldn’t be enjoyed getting that taste out is what having success is all about. The 2012 team wasn’t scared of the SEC and proved that they belonged there in year one, and there is not a whole lot more you could ask from any team.
