Notes from Reggie Brown interview
* A majority of the former players is always watching the program, and things are very exciting this year. He’s been very impressed at how A&M has stepped into the SEC and he knows that Kevin Sumlin is on his way to bringing even more success to Aggieland.
* He played with Larry Jackson for three years while he was at A&M and is extremely proud of what Jackson is doing this year at A&M. Jackson is a tremendous worker and a great guy.
* Coming from Austin, all you ever hear about is the University of Texas. He’s always been kind of a rebel, and since Texas wasn’t winning at the time, he decided to come to A&M once he was offered. He was competing with his future roommate for A&M’s final offer, but after their recruiting trips the coaching staff decided to take both of them.
* The Wrecking Crew played a tremendous part in his wanting to be an Aggie. When he was getting recruited, Bob Davie always threw out the line about wanting to be part of something special, and that’s exactly what The Wrecking Crew was. He took getting into the starting lineup of the best defense in the country as a challenge and used that to his advantage.
* One thing he will always remember about his time at A&M is his three victories against Texas. Another thing he remembers is the camaraderie between his teammates and the journey they had together while at A&M.
* Being drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions was unbelievable. He went from being a freshman at A&M not knowing if he was going to get to play to possibly having an opportunity to play in the NFL and then all the way to being picked in the first round. Once drafted, all the stress goes away, but it comes right back when you realize that you now have to fulfill that first round status.
* On December 21st, 1997 he suffered a spinal injury while playing against the New York Jets. The day started line every other game day and was normal until he went to make a routine tackle on a third and long play. He remembers a bunch of pressure hitting the top of his head and then rolling over to his back. At that point he couldn’t breathe and couldn’t really move his body, and the next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital and being able to fidget his body a little here and there. After going through a surgery he doesn’t remember, he was told that his injury would be career-ending.
* It took a while for him to understand how serious his injury was. Grasping the fact that he was able to bench press 400 pounds one day and not pick his head up the next was the first step to completely understanding the severity of the injury. Football took a backburner after the injury happened because he wasn’t able to perform the most basic everyday tasks.
