Texas A&M Football
Notes from Kevin Murray interview
* Much like everyone else, he is enjoying the ride of the 2012 A&M football season. He thinks someone forgot to tell the players that they weren’t supposed to be taking the SEC by storm the way they are so far.
* You can go back and look at what was said at SEC media days this summer, and it’s easy to see that people thought the Aggies would finish near the bottom of the conference. Looking at where they are now is a testament to the job that Coach Sumlin and his staff have done with this team and the degree to which the players are buying into Sumlin’s philosophy. The team has gotten better week by week, and now that they have bought into Sumlin 100% they are having a great deal of success.
* He was watching at home and made it a point to take the day off from working in order to watch the game. The most intriguing matchup in his opinion going into the game was how Nick Saban’s defense would matchup with the A&M offense. He felt like A&M would have an advantage because the Tide don’t see a spread offense on a regular basis. The Aggie defense has been phenomenal as well this year which sometimes gets overlooked by fans. A win like that will help immensely on recruiting and will reverberate with people across the country.
* When asked about Johnny Manziel’s freshman season, all he could say was, “Wow.” Manziel is absolutely unorthodox, but he is able to perform at the highest level ever single week. The maturation of Manziel through the season has been incredible and Kliff Kingsbury has done a great job of eliminating the knucklehead plays he had a tendency to try early in the season. Manziel has done a better job of playing within the offense in the past few weeks, and that speaks to his evolution from the beginning of the year. As long as he continues to improve, the sky is the limit for Manziel.
* Early on in the year, Manziel was running around and scrambling a lot. Against Alabama, he didn’t do too much of that which shows his maturity and ability to pick up the offense more and more as the season has progressed. Manziel’s feet open up the other weapons on the field for the A&M offense, and using them all effectively makes it impossible for defenses to cover everyone at the same time. It’s not only impressive that Manziel is able to make the plays he does, but to be doing it on the highest of stages at his age is almost unbelievable.
* Comparing Manziel to Doug Flutie is right on. He believes that Manziel’s feet are a little better than Flutie’s were, but their playmaking ability is very similar.
* The Heisman trophy is very political. Manziel has done a phenomenal job, and whether or not he comes away with the Heisman, the important thing is to win the next two games, get to a BCS bowl and finish the season on a high note.
