Around Aggieland (5/16)
On Friday’s edition of TexAgs Live, Callie Garner took us Around Aggieland as Texas A&M baseball wraps up the regular season, and multiple teams enter postseason play with women's tennis in the NCAA semifinals and softball entering regionals as the No. 1 overall seed.
Baseball
Texas A&M baseball jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold on in Thursday night’s series opener at No. 10 Georgia.
Caden Sorrell gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the first inning — his 12th of the season. Wyatt Henseler added a solo shot in the third, the 66th of his career.
Georgia responded with seven runs in the third inning and went on to win, 10-6. Kaeden Kent added a solo homer for the Aggies in the sixth, but the comeback fell short.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday in Athens.
Women’s Tennis
The Texas A&M women’s tennis team is heading back to the Final Four.
The second-ranked Aggies advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the second straight season after defeating No. 10 Tennessee, 4-2, in Thursday’s quarterfinals at the Hurd Tennis Center. A&M dropped the doubles point early but quickly rebounded in singles play. Nicole Kihrin and Mary Stoiana each won in straight sets to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead. Mia Kupres clinched the match, rallying from behind in the second set and sealing the win in a tiebreaker.
Texas A&M will face No. 3 Michigan in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Softball
The road to Oklahoma City begins Friday for the top-ranked Texas A&M softball team.
The No. 1 overall seed Aggies are set to open the Bryan-College Station Regional against Saint Francis at 2:30 p.m. at Davis Diamond. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
Texas A&M enters the NCAA Tournament with a 45-9 record and the top national seed for the first time in program history. This marks the Aggies’ 35th tournament appearance and their 23rd consecutive trip — one of the longest active streaks in the nation.
The winner of Friday’s matchup will face the winner of Liberty vs. Marist in Saturday’s regional semifinal.
Men’s Golf
The Texas A&M men’s golf team is headed back to the NCAA Championship.
The 12th-ranked Aggies secured a runner-up finish at the Auburn Regional, shooting 4-under in the final round to finish at 5-under for the tournament. A&M finished second behind host Auburn.
This marks Texas A&M’s fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship and its sixth in the last seven regionals.
The national championship begins next week in Carlsbad, California.
Track and Field
Texas A&M track and field opened the SEC Championships with a strong showing in Lexington, Kentucky.
Sofia Yakushina leads the heptathlon after placing in the top five of all four events on Day 1, including a win in the 200 meters. McKenzie Fairchild added the Aggies’ first points with a season-best throw in the javelin, finishing fourth.
Sam Whitmarsh and Luca Santorum advanced to the men’s 800-meter final, while Jasmine Montgomery and Camryn Dickson earned spots in the women’s 200-meter final.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Ja’Qualon Scott ran a personal-best 48.85 — the top time in prelims — and Bryce McCray also advanced.
The Aggies are ranked No. 2 nationally on the men’s side and No. 4 on the women’s. The SEC Outdoor Championships conclude Saturday.
