Aggie Flashback w/ Reggie McNeal

Notes from Reggie McNeal interview

* He bounced around Canada for a couple of years while playing football in the CFL until his back injury ended his career a little early. He’s now back at A&M finishing up his degree and has about a year left. Once he gets done, he plans on coaching and trying to get onboard with the A&M coaching staff to some degree. He’s currently commuting to and from College Station on Tuesdays and Thursdays to come to class, however, he is looking for a place in B/CS to move into.

* After being the honorary captain at last week’s game against South Carolina State, he felt like he was ready to suit up again. It was a wonderful feeling to know that the support for him is still there and that the whole school still loves him.

* Johnny Manziel is a great athlete who has a lot of upside to his game. Watching Manziel play, he was reminded of himself back in his heyday. However, if Manziel, himself and Usain Bolt were to line up for the 40 yard dash, Manziel would come in third with Bolt coming in first and himself in second. However, if the race was run while he was in college, he believes that he could take Bolt in the 40.

* Going into the game against top-ranked ranked Oklahoma, he wasn’t nervous at all because he didn’t have to start. During that game, it seemed as if the field would just open up anytime he threw the ball. That could possibly be contributed to the man who was calling the plays for A&M that day, Mr. Kevin Sumlin himself. That game against Oklahoma, along with playing against Colorado his junior year, were a couple of his favorite memories of his time at A&M.

* When Coach Franchione switched the offensive scheme to the option before his senior year, it set him back a lot. He never looked at himself as an option quarterback and instead saw himself as a passer first and a runner second.

* He would love to play in the offense Sumlin is running at A&M right now because it’s so wide open and a bunch of weapons out wide to use to your advantage.

* He thinks everyday about how his career would have been different if R.C. Slocum would have never left A&M and he would have been able to spend four years with Sumlin as his offensive coordinator. He hears comparisons to current quarterbacks such as Robert Griffin III that make him think about what could have been and how great of a career he could have had. He truly believes that if he would have come out of high school a few years later that he could have been a top-5 pick in the NFL draft.

* About a year ago, one of his cousins showed him the play that sent his Lufkin team to the state championship on YouTube. He remembers that game being ridiculously crazy because it was pouring down rain the entire game. They were losing 20-0 at halftime and ended up going ahead with 36 seconds left in the game.

* He came to A&M because he wanted to play for Coach Slocum because of the great relationship the two of them had. He always loved being an Aggie, and that fact contributed a great deal to him staying at A&M after Franchione was hired. However, once Franchione was hired he got on the phone with the University of Miami about a possible transfer to the Florida school. Miami had a scholarship waiting for him if he wanted it, but after being told by Franchione that the offense was not going to change, he decided to finish out his collegiate career at A&M. Coming out of high school, Franchione tried recruiting him to play at Alabama, but he wanted no part of that because he didn’t want to run the option. He doesn’t regret staying at A&M because of what he has now, but if he was able to redo it, he probably would have left to further his football career.

Awesome! Loved hearing his thoughts on how Fran changing schemes affected everything. Good to know that Franchoneys (spelled incorrectly on purpose) ruined two outstanding QB's in McNeal and McGee.
His plans on transferring to the U was also news to my ears. Its interesting to think what he could have been if he did leave.

Reggie was a phenom athlete and Fran completely ruined his career and chances. Yes, he would flourish in our current offense and I believe he would be up there as draft picks go. I just cannot understand however why the NFL coaches didn't see/understand this. Perhaps I am overestimated his abilities, but he was something special that is for sure. I remember how crazy that Oklahoma game was when he came out. One of the best game experiences I remember at Kyle.

Coach Fran, bad at evaluating player strengths? No not the guy who played Brian Urlacher at safety? Not the guy who wanted to play LaDainian Tomlinson at fullback, but was forced to play him at running back due to injury? No way he's a bad talent evaluator!

I was sadly one of the many ready for a change with RC as I felt he couldn't get us to the next level only to miss being at that level.

Fran tricked everyone as I was working in Austin at the time and the locals were very worried he might take us to another level too.

We were all right, unfortunately the change in level was down.

I remember the tu fans calling in to Austin radio after losing to OU in 2003 complaining that Mack had recruited the wrong qb (VY) and should have landed Reggie instead.

Two years later Fran was munching on little Debbie's while stealing newsletter money and VY was hoisting the glass football.

In hindsight, I don't think the NCAA could punish us any more harshly than what we inflicted on ourselves by hiring fran. What a complete train wreck.

Sumlin and Reggie were some of the most exciting things we had going on Offense that year...

Fran will forever be an egomaniac...with an inferiority complex.

I loved McNeal and also believe he was one of the greatest talents ever to play for the Aggies. However, Reggie disnt always handle his business as he should have. He could be just as immature off the field. as he was talented on field.

1. A decade setback is about right as it turned out. However, Alabama tried hard to keep Fran.....sometimes things just don't work out. Either that or it was just our time to walk through the football wilderness.

2. I'm sorry but I'm not buying that all would have been well had we kept RC. Obviously it wouldn't have been as bad but the trend was a downward one and i have always maintained that the RC pumpers would not have been able to say that he never had a losing record had he not been spared the 2003 season. The 2002 defense blew some leads and gave up a lot of points even with Ty Warren and the Candyman.....both members of his last really good recruiting class.

I am sorry for Reggie though.

And WTF is this.......

And the zoo is filled with people whining about wanting to be a power run team again...

I will stop supporting A&M if talent like reggies is waisted again.

Reggie was our Heisman hopeful. A best dual threat quarterback and our QB coach at that time was awesome. I wished Fran changed the offensive scheme to fit our QB like Mack did for Vince. I think after Reggie's breakout year, he changed the offense on him to be like Urban's offense. Anyway. The OU game was priceless. It sucks that things didn't pan out well in the NFL, but I like to see all these changes going on! J-Train, now Reggie. Go Reggie!!!! Best and most fun QB to watch in my books.

His time in the NFL didn't bring him the money that VY got, but I guess their current net worth isn't too different now. He definitely doesn't have the legal and financial troubles.
