Texas A&M Women's Golf
Chadwell explains A&M's 'excitement' about upcoming spring slate
With the fall schedule in the rearview, Texas A&M head women's golf coach Gerrod Chadwell joined us on TexAgs Live for an in-studio chat. Chadwell spoke on his squad's youth, what the spring schedule will bring and the overall vibe among coaches on campus.
Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview
- We signed four young ladies. Their No. 2 ranking is great. That is a byproduct of them competing a lot and playing well. I am most concerned about and happy about their fit with our program and Aggieland.
- It is cool to see when you are always sandwiched between Duke and UCLA. That was not here before. We have taken someone's seat at the table in the last three years. It is a lot of fun. Those memories bring those girls back together.
- We are knocking on the door. We are close. This group that signed is already talking about winning it all. You have to talk about it. I don't see it coming to fruition if you don't talk about it before you get there. The ladies that have come through our program have set the bar high.
- Brian Kortan and I would say we need Texas Junior Golf to be strong. It is there. Being able to go into the Pacific Northwest, Las Vegas and Alabama will make recruiting a lot easier down the road. Young ladies are having success here. Success follows success. Our job is getting easier in identifying fits.
- Having a pitch with proof makes it easier. It is not a sell. It is more of an education of what we have to offer. I don't chase girls down. I might call every other week. We make an offer, which is yours, until you tell us no. I want people that want to be here. You have to have an interest in us. If you haven't done your research, I don't know if you will understand this place. These young ladies did.
- This group is younger. You are bringing this class into a nucleus of great Aggies. We graduated three great players last year. You can't replace that overnight. This class will supplement the girls that are already here.
- It is going to be a lot of fun, especially with that youth and excitement around you. Our job is getting harder because that goes away a lot quicker with all the distractions thrown at athletes.
- We played without Adela Cernousek for a week in the fall. We had one of the lowest rounds in school history in Nashville. We had every chance to win the tournament in Fort Worth, and we should have. It was a great learning lesson.
- What the ladies do between now and January will dramatically impact what we do this spring. That is a choice they get to make. Everything is right in front of us. We got a lot of reps in the fall. Our schedule will prepare us for an SEC Championship and, hopefully, the road to a national championship.
- I am having a lot of fun. I am a sports guy. It is fun being around all these successful programs. We have a lot of great coaches on campus. My family loves it here. Our daughter is in school now. We are having a lot of fun. I am excited for the holidays with my little one.
