Texas A&M volleyball swept on the road by No. 13 Kentucky, 3-0
The Wildcats went wild on the Aggies.
Friday night had Texas A&M volleyball in Lexington, where the Aggies took on the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats. This game featured a pair of squads who both had at least 14 wins, with A&M entering at 15-5 and Kentucky sitting at 14-7.
And Kentucky was victorious in this one, as the Wildcats defeated A&M, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14).
The Ags are now 15-6 with a 6-5 conference record with the loss.
A&M has now been swept in back-to-back games, and four of the team’s six losses this year have been on the wrong end of a sweep.
It was a great first set between the two teams, and the Aggies got off to a good start that had them leading 12-9. Kills from junior opposite Logan Lednicky and junior middle blocker Ifenna Cos-Okpalla pushed A&M to the early advantage, but Kentucky pushed right back.
With the Maroon & White leading 17-14, the Wildcats scored three straight points to even the frame, and that tie eventually became 21-21.
Kentucky went on a 4-1 run to close out the opening period and win 25-21, as freshman outside hitter Asia Thigpen scored via two kills to help the Wildcats to victory. Junior outside hitter Emily Hellmuth also committed an attack error that handed Kentucky set point.
The game’s second stanza produced a similar result. The Wildcats and Aggies went at it to begin the set, and it was tied 12-12 as a result. Kentucky then scored three straight to take a 15-12 advantage, and the Wildcats had all the momentum they needed at that point.
UK held the lead for the rest of the set, and the Wildcats found themselves up 22-16, looking for another win. While A&M tried to battle back, redshirt freshman middle blocker Jordyn Dailey tallied two kills to give Kentucky a 25-20 win.
The final set of this affair was ugly and the worst one the Aggies played all night, losing by double digits. The Wildcats got off to a red-hot start, and they claimed a monster 15-4 advantage right out of the gate as they looked to put the match away.
In a deep hole, A&M tried to fight back, but it was no use.
Kentucky kept its foot on the gas, and they stifled A&M completely with a 25-14 set win to give the Wildcats a 3-0 win.
The Aggies had a -.071 hitting percentage and just five kills in the third period. The Wildcats also had three service aces in this final set.
It was simply another very ugly game for the Maroon & White, who are now on a two-game losing streak. They had a .091 hitting percentage on Friday to go along with just 25 assists and one service ace.
The struggles against ranked opponents this season continue for the Aggies. With this defeat, the team is now 2-4 against top-25 foes in 2024.
A&M will look to break this losing streak in Knoxville on Sunday, Nov. 10, where they’ll play against Tennessee at 12 p.m. CT.
