Sitting at 2-2 in conference play, G Guerrieri's Aggies will head to Oxford on Friday to take on fellow SEC foe Ole Miss. On Wednesday's edition of TexAgs Live, the head coach spoke on the past week of Aggie soccer and this Friday's away matchup against the Ole Miss Rebels.

Key notes from G Guerrieri interview

  • We came into the week talking about how it was a week of opportunities because we are coming off of a loss against Oklahoma where we were shaking our heads like, "How did we lose that?" We played Auburn who is a top-5 team and has only given up two goals all season and has been averaging three goals a game. We had time to prepare and playing on the Thursday night at home would be to our advantage, if we took advantage of it. Players were prepared and in the right headspace, and they were able to put it together.

  • It was a great performance all the way around, specifically the way we were able to compact space, break out of that space, score on set pieces and manage the game we wanted to manage the game. Sydney Becerra had a great game, and we're starting to see Grace Ivey starting to come into her own. Sydney Fuller is feeling better, getting her foot underneath her, and our freshman goalkeeper also had another great performance.

  • We get that win, we're feeling good, and then we dont show up in the first half in Austin. In the second game, we outshot them, but it was too little, too late. We lose a game on the road. We've got to take advantage of these games we have and put these bad first halves off the radar. It's a head-scratcher to the extent because we know how to play. We know we can beat anybody, but sometimes our worst enemy is ourselves. One of the beauties and uglies of college sports is that you need to get yourself on track immediately.

  • On Friday, we play against the Ole Miss Rebels. It's a place where we've had success, so we're going in with confidence. Then we'll get the chance to give the players some time off. Monday and Tuesday, we have a little break, and it's not a break from practice but a break from school, so we'll move practice from the afternoon to the morning.

  • Sydney Becerra is a top recruit from her class. She's so smooth and elegant on the ball. She has great vision, and she has the ability to bend balls and move balls. She is not only our top scorer but is also leading the team in assists. She is one of the best in the SEC. The team looks at her as a leader. She and Carolyn Calzada are looked up to as role models in the way they play the game because they are fierce competitors and also very great players.

  • I wanted us to be 8-2 at the end of the ten games. Here we are at 7-5. We've got to take the lessons learned and apply them. We're playing against another excellent goalkeeper against Ole Miss on Friday night. Let's take advantage of these things. Let's put our best players in positions to score goals. Let's keep building on what we've done defensively, and I think we're looking at another good week.
