Wasted opportunities haunt Ags as Notre Dame spoils Elko Era opener

All temptation must be avoided.

Any impulse to put a positive spin on Texas A&M’s season-opening 23-13 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday night at Kyle Field immediately should be squelched.

Eternal optimists will remind that A&M was tied midway through the fourth quarter with the No. 7 ranked team in the nation. They’ll suggest A&M won’t play a tougher defense this season. They’ll see that as reason to assume precious victories await the Aggies.

Don’t listen to them. Even if some of that is true, no solace should be taken in another close loss to a highly-ranked opponent.

A year ago, the Aggies lost close games to No. 11 Alabama, No. 19 Tennessee, No. 10 Ole Miss and No. 14 LSU.

There is no longer any honor in being the little train that almost could.

Tied 6-6 at halftime, there was an ominous feeling that A&M would pay for chances missed.

On A&M’s opening series, quarterback Conner Weigman could not connect with wide-open running back EJ Smith on a pass that probably would have resulted in a 17-yard touchdown. The Aggies settled for a Randy Bond field goal.

A third-down conversion at midfield via quarterback sneak was ruffled by a false start penalty against a wide receiver who wasn’t involved in the play.

Another false start on third-and-3 at the Notre Dame 32-yard line short-circuited another drive.

Bond salvaged another field goal.

Then, in the third quarter, the Aggies took over at midfield after stopping Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard on fourth-and-2.

A&M eventually gave the ball back on downs.

“Notre Dame came in here, and they beat us. There’s really no two ways around it. To the Aggie fans, I thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for making this really a special day. You deserve better. We didn’t give it to you. We’ll go back to work. We’ll continue to drive this thing to become the product that you guys want and deserve for this program to be.”
- Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko

It was just another frustrating night of wasted opportunity. The offense was stagnant. The defense failed when it mattered most. Key plays weren’t made at pivotal junctures.

The only difference from a year ago was no postgame lamentation for failure to execute nor “find the inches.”

“Notre Dame came in here, and they beat us. There’s really no two ways around it,” coach Mike Elko said. “To the Aggie fans, I thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for making this really a special day.

“You deserve better. We didn’t give it to you. We’ll go back to work. We’ll continue to drive this thing to become the product that you guys want and deserve for this program to be.”

There was so much hope that with the arrival of Elko as head coach would come a discipline and a toughness to produce the plays which ultimately mean the difference in success and failure.

There was hope with the return of Weigman from injury. There was hope with a projected powerful defensive line presenting a mismatch for a Notre Dame offensive front with just six career starts combined among the five linemen.

It’s said that hope floats. But in the second half, hope sank like a rock.

A&M was left dragging the bottoms in search of explanations for what happened.

Weigman struggled. He completed just 12-of-30 passes for 100 yards. His second-quarter overthrow of 6-foot-6 receiver Noah Thomas resulted in an interception that set up Notre Dame at the A&M 29-yard line. That led to an Irish field goal.

Another interception on an ill-advised throw snuffed out an opportunity for A&M to add points just before the half.

“We’ve got to go back to the tape and figure out how to put him in better situations to get him comfortable,” Elko said. “The challenge tonight was they were going to play us in man (coverage) all night. So, there’s not a lot of easy access throws to get him comfortable and get him in rhythm. People are going to have to win to do that. We just were not able to get it going."

Zoe Kelton, TexAgs
Rushing for 70 yards on a career-high 20 attempts and one TD, Le’Veon Moss registered double-digit carries for the sixth time in his career.

Of course, excuses could be made for Weigman. He was back in the lineup since suffering an injury last season. He was also operating the new system of offensive coordinator Collin Klein.

But Leonard, a transfer from Duke, was in a similar situation. No excuses were made. Only plays.

Leonard didn’t throw much better than Weigman. He completed 18-of-30 passes for 158 yards.

But he ran for 64 yards and had key runs on a couple of Notre Dame scoring drives.

Leonard wasn’t alone in his running success, though.

The Aggies corralled Notre Dame’s running game throughout the first half. The Irish had just 65 rushing yards at halftime.

However, they consistently ripped through the A&M’s run defense in the second half to turn a 6-6 tie into a 20-13 advantage. Notre Dame more than doubled its rushing output in the second half.

That left the Aggies trying to figure out what went wrong.

“It was a litany of things,” Elko said. “I thought we could have done a better job up front controlling the line of scrimmage, for sure. We missed-fit some things. That created some of the large runs.”

Like a 47-yard touchdown run by Jadarian Price and a 21-yard score by Jeremiyah Love.

Sophomore linebacker Taurean York took the blame.

“I feel like the breakdown was me. I missed the tackle on the long touchdown. They ran for 200 yards, and I’d probably say three-quarters of that was in the second half. We’ve got to lock in more. It’s on me at the end of the day. I’ve got to get these guys right.”

“I feel like the breakdown was me,” he said. “I missed the tackle on the long touchdown. They ran for 200 yards, and I’d probably say three-quarters of that was in the second half. We’ve got to lock in more. It’s on me at the end of the day. I’ve got to get these guys right.”

Price’s touchdown staked Notre Dame to a 13-6 lead midway through the third quarter.

But the Aggies were able to drive for a game-tying Le’Veon Moss touchdown run with 11:48 to play.

Later in the quarter, Notre Dame faced third-and-5 at its own 20-yard line.

The Irish converted just 2-of-12 third downs all night.

With another third-down stop, the Aggies figured to get good field position for a potential game-winning drive.

Instead, Leonard completed a 9-yard pass for a first down.

He followed with a 20-yard pass down the sideline. Then, he ran for 11 yards and completed another pass for 18.

One play later, Love broke loose up the middle for the game-winning touchdown.

Like a recurring nightmare, the Aggies couldn’t make clutch plays in clutch times.

“What I told the guys in the locker room is for us to get this program over the hump, we’re going to have to learn how to put ourselves in position to play the game the way we need to in those moments,” Elko said. “We just didn’t do that tonight."

As usual, well said. Enough excuses. That was an unacceptable performance. If we just played a clean game, we probably win.

Expected more out of Elko in his return, but I'm glad he's willing to be held accountable for now.

End of Q1, ND defense completely gassed. Our staff just lets the clock wind down, content to let ND recover to Q2 instead of running another play. And where's this phenomenal conditioning and explosive S&C? ND put us to the sword in the 4th, in our own TX heat.

If they need to get Weigman comfortable it may be time to move on. I've spent too many seasons watching good A&M teams squander big wins because of shaky QB play. We need a guy who wants the ball in big moments. A guy who believes he can take over a game. Maybe he just wasn't physically well enough last night so there's that. But he hasn't looked "comfortable" for quite a while now.

exactly! Let's dumb down the playbook and make it easy for the 5 star junior QB who some folks say is going to be the number one qb taken in the draft… please give him some easier throws so he can find a rhythm

A few thoughts:

1) The coaching staff did not look into the portal for QBs despite not having proof that we had a quality starting caliber QB. I always thought this was our #1 need.

2) Weigmans performances do not indicate he could step up. Reed showed the most potential in the past (spring game and bowl game). Coaches sometimes need to place a different QB in (even just for a game) to give us a chance to win. No idea why we elected to continue to play him and accept a loss.

3) Weigman is a junior with next year being a senior. He should not be compared to a true freshmen who needs developmental time. We need to evaluate who is the QB of the future including the next game.

4) Offensive line looked improved especially against a solid defense. Weigman on many occasions had time. RBs had their moments.

5) Defense look good outside of a drive or two in the second half.

6) Seems all injured people returned. Hopefully nothing permanent or long lasting occurred.

7) There were opportunities for touchdowns with a good QB

Sorry, but the offense couldn't have been dumbed down any more than it was last night. So vanilla. We're just a bad offense because we have no playmakers. Our WRs are really, really, really bad and the scheme and play calling didn't do anything to help out.

Agree. The main difference I saw in the 2 QB's faces last night in the close-ups was confidence, Leonard looked confident, Weigman didn't. I've just never thought Weiqman was 'The Guy'. Personally I feel Johnson was an improvement last year and I actually think Henderson looked better than both of them.

Anyone else offended when Elko refers to the players as "kids?" Grown adults in their early 20s performing at this level are not "kids." Yesterday we saw a clear exhibition of "kids" vs men. I hope at some point he acknowledges this fact and begins referring to the Fightin' Texas Aggies as men with all of the expectations, discipline, and behavior -- and results -- that come along with it. Until then, Elko has no respect in my view.

No one, not even you, would depend on the portal when you have the Weigman EVERYONE thought he would be. There is where we went wrong, not in not looking for portal QB alternatives.

Funny how everyone says portal for QB....pretty dumb hindsight.

What no one really remembers is that the new staff had good film on our 3 (and 4th with Miles) QB room and it was just as good as most options out there. There was a lot of recruiting to keep them all 'here' (so, there were portal wins to keep the room).

Yes, CW stunk it up. Maybe the injury from last year has messed up his confidence to step into throws...maybe he doesn't trust OL to protect him...maybe the QB clock is counting too fast in his head....maybe Klein gameplan was quick passes due to OL play and a mediocre WR corps.

Many knew coming into this game that OL was a huge question mark AND that our WR group would be stifled by ND DBs (it was obvious to every prognosticator that we do not have a proven WR threat to beat man coverage...EStew was that guy and a fav of CWs).

I do wish that ND wasn't the first game as w so many new coaches and CW coming back, it would have been better to have a couple games to work out some things.

I'm not offended but I do think it's disrespectful to call these young men kids.
They are not kids and should not be referred to as such.
I hate it every time I hear them called kids.

York putting it on himself from the start. Dude is a winner, and whether it's at this level or the next, the hard work will pay off immensely for him.

As far as the game, typical Aggie crap. Never tried anything different offensively. No rhythm. Just kept hoping the same stuff would magically start working. Klein must've thought he was still calling the spring game! I'm really hoping we hear from him. Welcome to Big Boy football Colin Klein...you need to adjust that big xii playbook.

The team was exposed in its season opener as weak in multiple ways, for all the football world to see. It is unfortunate and dysfunctional that the opening game created a legitimate, serious QB controversy and revealed an impotent offense.

Elko and Klein are facing a very steep learning curve.

I had prior posts saying our #1 need was a QB during the portal season (right when Elko started). Weigman offered hope (he may still get there), sometimes you need a proven winner. Nothing wrong with taking a prized QB from the transfer portal (many teams did that in the past with the transfer QB being on the heisman list if not the winner).

Even if Weigman became great (still a chance), nothing is wrong with having an extra QB (especially the way we go through QBs). We haven't had solid QB play in years on a consistent basis.

Great write up OB.

Unlike many Aggies, who take to the forums as some sort of therapy to work out their issues, I think it's possible for a fan to look at the game realistically without being a doomer.

The truth is that we flat out got beat but we had our opportunities, and even created our own a few times.
I disagree that the defense was a disappointment nor did it "let the team down when it mattered most". They came up with an incredible 4th down stop against an amazing running QB. They held ND to a FG after an awful INT deep in our own territory. They also kept us tied 6-6 for nearly 75% of the game.

I would take that performance every Saturday the rest of the season. I was proud of the defenses effort, and what's encouraging is that they obviously do have room for improvement. Unlike past coaching regimes, the current one was obviously unhappy and quick to point out why, and not in any general sense. Elko already had specific things in mind when speaking at the presser and he hasn't even been able to watch tape yet.

I'm not sure if you were able to see it in the press box, but at the end of the game Elko was screaming at his staff to stop throwing the ball so they could just get the off the field and get to work fixing things.

The offense played an elite defense. This isn't an opinion based on the stats against us. If you just watched their mechanics, their reads, their footwork, especially in the secondary, it was elite.

They played man coverage all night, and dared us to make them pay for it. We never could. Their DBs were like bees on honey to our WRs. It was bad. Not to mention that same position group cost us one potential scoring drive with the false start.

Conner didn't play great which made things worse but I would argue that some of Connor's mistakes were a by product of our bad WR play. His first INT was 100% his fault. Ball sailed on him. ND DB was positioned perfectly to make the tackle, and the ball hit him right in the chest.

Second INT was different. It was clear at that point that Conner wasn't going to find an open WR probably all night. It was almost the end of the 2nd half, he had seen enough to make this calculation. He is smart enough to know A&M needed to put points up before half with ND getting the ball.

So instead of protecting the ball like he usually tries to, he knew he needed to start forcing some balls and hope his guys could make plays. ND made him pay for getting too aggressive too early. If our WRs could have shown any signs of getting open, and Connor just not seeing it, he would have seen this on the IPads they now get to use.

He didn't because no such open WR existed on any play. The throw to Noah was one of the few instances and that ball got INT'd too.

The offense started getting stuffed, and it caught up with the defense from an energy standpoint.

We will just have to kick their asses next year in south bend.

I'm confident in this staff and still excited about the season ahead. Gig 'em

This is a good OP summary of the game.

After the 1st Quarter, seeing our passing the game challenges, our offensive game plan should have been...

Controlling the line of scrimmage with running and keeping the Notre Dame D on the field longer would have helped us immensely. Plus, it would have given our defense more time on the sideline, not on the field while allowing us to control the overall game clock.

The 12th Man was amazing and fully supported the team throughout the game with yelling and waving 12th-Man towels. The atmosphere for winning last night was in the Kyle Field stands and potentially on the field, but it was not displayed on the sidelines.

We had the opportunity to win this game. Ugh!
