A&M's head coach dissects the Aggies' scrimmage

On who particularly stood out in the scrimmage…
"I don’t know, I have to watch film. To be honest with you I don’t know. We got over 120 plays, I thought that was good. Our quarterbacks had at least 30-plus snaps a piece which was good, about half a game. Johnny might have gotten to 40, I’ve got to look at the numbers. We mixed them up with everybody and I think everyone wanted to see how the quarterback race is going.

"[Matt] Joeckel came in and did some good things. He’s been really, really having a good camp. He’s improved a lot. We’ve got some young guys playing pretty well. The most disappointing thing was Matthews, I wanted to get him some more snaps but he got hurt early with an ankle and the fact we held Lamothe and Hicks, our two tight ends, out. That kind of limited us a little bit, we use some two tight end formations and we snuck Germain Ifedi in there for some balance for short yardage.

"Lamothe has been sick, he’s got a respiratory deal. So we’ll get those guys back for some two tight end sets. I thought it gave our quarterbacks a chance to operate all over the field. We wanted to throw some balls, especially in the red zone and see who could make some plays. Combine that with the stress in the no-huddle and I was not pleased with the tempo that we ran our offense and our defense has got to match that tempo. We need to turn it up this week."

On Trey Williams and the running backs…
"He’s been doing that all camp, making people miss and he’s got wire-to-wire speed to go with that. He’s a good player, he’s got to learn the offense. He’s moving around a lot and he got a penalty because of it. He wants to be great and he’ll work at it but he’s got to do the little things in protection. I like all of our guys. Brandon didn’t go today. I think everybody sees the value Tre Carson will bring to the table a year from now once he’s up to 230 pounds.

"I thought Christine [Michael] did some good things, running out of different formations. We’ve got a good group of running backs. For those of you who didn’t think we were going to run the ball, you understand how we run it and how we utilize our running backs. That’s why we keep getting good ones."

On announcing a quarterback…
"The latest will be next weekend, I’ve got to watch the video."

On getting more defensive pressure with Nealy at tackle…
"I saw what you saw. Nealy’s a hard playing guy put we’ve got to watch the video to find out."

On the quarterback competition…
"Right now I’ve got to go look at all of their reads and progressions and what they’re doing, how they’re getting the ball out. We mixed them up with the lines with the first and second lines to try to give them a shot. We’ll see. The evaluation is ongoing. We didn’t throw to the defense much. We had only 4 or 5 illegal procedures out of 120 snaps, which was better than we did in the spring but it’s not what we want.

"We only had one on defense. There are some positives from that standpoint. What we told them was effort and toughness. I told them we need to show courage today and we need to show effort. We’ll work with them from there."

On De’Vante Harris getting considerable playing time (with the 1s)…
"That’s where he is right now. (Deshazor Everett moving to safety as a result) speaks to some of the lack of production from some of the other guys."

On the offense being better than the defense…
"I would say we have one of the better offensive lines in the country and three or four five star running backs and we don’t have that on defense right now. Our offensive line is pretty good."

On the tempo…
"We can do better from a tempo standpoint, we’re not pushing the ball like we need to. We’ve got to get used to setting the ball and beating the referee to the spot and getting guys lined up. Then we can be really effective offensively, particularly as the game goes on."

On the kicking game…
"We did pretty good. What did we miss, one field goal over the upright? In punting we’ve got us a war. We’ve got guys that need to be consistent and they know who they are."

On the walk-on (Wildman)…
"Anyone who knows me knows the best player will play. You demonstrate the ability to win and compete, you’ll play."

On next week…
"There will be some decisions made after today about positions and guys getting reps. The good news about this week is that it’s more difficult. We’ve got two practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We’ve got eight practices in five days and then another scrimmage. The good news is we’ve got a lot of work to get done, but we’ve got plenty of time to get it done this week."
