Nebraska transfer guard C.J. Wilcher commits to Texas A&M hoops

The Texas A&M basketball staff continues to build next year’s roster through the transfer portal as Nebraska shooting guard C.J. Wilcher announced his commitment to the Aggies via social media. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Nebraska and will be a graduate transfer next fall with one year of eligibility remaining when he joins A&M for the 2024-2025 season.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Plainfield, New Jersey, native originally suited up for Xavier as a freshman, but transferred and played the past three seasons at Nebraska — averaging 8.0 points and 2.3 rebounds as a Cornhusker.

Wilcher was the designated sixth-man scorer off the bench as a senior. His specialty is perimeter shooting, hitting 40.6 percent of his threes in 2021-2022 and 39.4 percent last season. In fact, 66 percent of his field goal attempts have come from behind the arc, making 144 3-pointers in his stint in Lincoln.

He is also extremely accurate from the charity stripe, shooting 94 percent in 2023-2024.

You can view his highlights below:

Wilcher was the catalyst to the Huskers’ biggest win this past season, pouring in a season-high 22 points in a thrilling overtime upset victory over No. 6 Wisconsin.

He will be counted on to fill a significant hole for the Aggies on the perimeter, where the team finished near the bottom of the NCAA rankings at No. 335 in 3-point shooting (29.3 percent). He is adept at coming off screens with a pick-and-pop, and he’s long enough to get his shot off over smaller guards on the perimeter, in addition to shooting off the dribble.

The addition of Wilcher is the first of the current transfer window. The Aggies are still scheduled to host several transfer targets in the coming two weeks, so the roster could still see additional changes in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned to TexAgs for the latest news from the transfer portal as Buzz Williams and staff continue to re-tool the roster for the 2024-2025 season.

I need to see the full portal haul before making a call on this. If this is the best guard you pickup then yikes. If you pickup 3 perimeter guys and this is your 3rd best of the bunch then it's a real nice pickup.

8 ppg avg seems low for a high percentage 3pt shooter. But if his main role is off the bench just sounds like limited minutes plus limited touches. Hope we can get him more touches and that the make rate stays up there.

Those shooting numbers don't make you optimistic at all?

Sure. But if we are talking this is the best guard we land and we lost Boots then I'm concerned. If we land two other guards and this guy and he is a nice shooter off the bench then I like it. He's a 4 year player who never has put up double digits, so I need to know the role he is filling before I make judgement. So I'll judge it when we are done with the haul.

why are some holding off judgement on this pickup. it's a quality pickup in an area we desperately need help. who knows how many more guards we get and who they may be but to take a pessimistic approach to this and hypothesizing where this guy will be in overall transfers is dumb.

we need guys who can hit threes this guy can, good pickup. please get more.

Against us in the NCAA tourney, Wilcher played 12 minutes. Box score is really bare on his line:

Two shot attempts, one of them from deep. Had 2 points and 1 steal. That's it.

In he can shoot 40% from 3 and average 6-7 attempts per game that will help. Gotta like the ft %.

Right. Even the threat of a consistent outside shooter will open up the lane more for penetration.

Probably because we need a Boots replacement.

This guy looks more like a Hefner replacement.

I don't think anyone took a pessimistic approach to this A wait and see approach is a very reasonable take Is this guy being brought in to try to fill Boots spot or is he being brought in to be a nice bench player? That's a very important part of the puzzle that we don't know the answer to at this time.

Ditto above comments.
We better have a better more well rounded guard coming in or else we did not do well in the portal.
This guy doesn't appear capable of replacing boots' production

I don't think anyone expects this guy to file the Boots role. He's the shooter we so desperately need. I hope we add more but it wouldn't shock me if Buzz was expecting Jace to pick up some of the slack from missing Boots.

The is a Hefner replacement, not a Boots replacement. With that being said, this is a nice upgrade/pickup.

Still have to wait for a big splash type portal transfer.

As mentioned above if we land a better scoring guard or two then this pickup looks much better. But nice to have a shooter. We obviously have been targeting some scorers, but haven't landed any yet.

The FT numbers are crazy. He shot 94% this year, but the two prior years he shot 63%. That's a big difference. Granted it's a small sample size as he doesn't shoot many. He only shot 33 FTs in 33 games this year.

If he can't play defense he's pretty much a guy off the bench I'd think for when you need to spread things out. Kudo's to Buzz for recognizing you need that . That is kind of what Hefner is too but he never sniffed 40% from behind the arc over the course of a season. Hefner was a core rotation player for over half of this season.
