Standing at 15-5 overall and 3-4 in the SEC, Texas A&M women's basketball is looking to bounce back against Mississippi State on Sunday in the BTHO Breast Cancer Game. On Tuesday, head coach Joni Taylor spoke to TexAgs Radio about the latest with her team.

Key notes from Joni Taylor interview

  • At Missouri, they went into a tough environment, and Missouri presented different challenges than anybody else in our conference. I was really proud of how we played. It was good for us to set the tone defensively and hold them to six points in the first quarter. That first quarter sustained us as they went on a run. It was a good road win.

  • We went to Florida on Sunday and got off to a terrible start. They put us on our heels and were the aggressors from start to finish. We went on a run and took the lead in the third quarter, but we ran out of gas. We made too many mistakes on the road that you can't make against anybody in this league.

  • I was happy for the players to get that Missouri road win. As coaches, it wasn't anything to worry about. It didn't haunt us because we knew it was coming. We know what the future is going to be. To get your first road win since February of 2022, I was happy for those players. I was happy for them and for the program.

  • Lauren Ware is our leader. She's our Mama Bear. She gives us a presence both offensively and defensively. She's our talker, our communicator and our anchor. She brings the experience and championship mentality that we're lacking. She played in the Final Four at Arizona. It carries over to the rest of our team.

  • This midweek off gives us an extra off day and an opportunity to work on ourselves. We'll start prep for Mississippi State on Friday, and regardless if we have the bye, our prep always starts two days out. Hopefully, we'll get rested and some players back as we prepare for a team that just upset LSU on its home court.

  • We're looking forward to getting back to Reed Arena. It's our breast cancer awareness game and our alumni weekend. We're hoping the Reed Rowdies can bring a great environment much like they did against Tennessee. We're looking forward to being back at home.

Curious how we finish this SEC slate. Barker is certainly a key component, but the team has shown they can win without her recently (or at least keep it close with the exception of LSU an SC). From the outside looking in, she is supremely talented and a lot of fun to watch, but I don't think the offense runs through her anymore like it did last year. Am I wrong? IDK. Looks to me like, the offense is initially going to run through Lauren (or it should), and she can use her size to attack the rim or pass back out. I really like when we attack the rim; but the reality is we are not a great free throw shooting team (or shooting team in general). It's a conundrum for the coaches I'm sure! Defensively, we are a good team IMO. Offensively we are either good or inconsistent at the wrong times. There is no in between.
